I was looking around using my stumbleupon button in firefox when I stumbled upon something that caught my eye. I read this and it had quite an effect. half of me wanted to bust up laughing because if the blatent ignorance of this person. The other half wanted to really set the guy that wrote these articles straight. Anyways I decided that if I know about it. I will let all my fellow Players know about it. so read this and try not to punch your monitor in anger.

the url does not open up because of it but here is a google search that will take you to it

Oh....My....Thats rediculous!

I looked so hard for it but I can't find it...

Somewhere on these boards or rpg.net (I think) boards is a motivators thread that has a mocking of each of the comics. It's really funny, I just can't find it and google is failing me. (if it's here, it's the psionic motivators thread, if it's rpg.net, good luck finding it).

"I was a witch high priest (Alexandrian tradition) during the period 1973-84"

From the date range I'd say the person was a boomer who did WAY too many drugs. Typical.

Every time someone discovers Jack Chick's website for the first time, they seem to believe that they are the first to post about it. They are not. Chick, his tracts, and his views on D&D and roleplaying games in general are well-known on these forums, for obvious reasons. For those same reasons, any thread talking about him almost inevitably descends into a torrent of incredulous disbelief, mocking laughter, and scathing insults directed at him, and has to be locked.

There is a reason his website's address is blocked by the language filter. "Discussions" about Jack Chick never end well.

This sort of rhetoric found in that article does not bother me at all. I look at it and am inspired. I joined the Air Force in 1979, fresh out of High School. I was done with basic training and in technical school. I was bored and looking for something fun to do.

While going through the rec-room I noticed a group of people sitting around on the floor playing a game I did not recognize. I asked what it was and they told me it was Dungeons and Dragons. After several more questions, they asked me if I wanted to play.

Of course, I knew nothing about the game. The DM (who I now think was a bit green) thought that the best way for me to learn was to start with a first level character, even though the group was around fifth level. He gave me a first level wizard and told me to just watch and pick the game up as I went.

Well, I was absolutely lost. I saw other people say that they were going to attack some monster so I stated that I would attack it too. The DM told me not to as I would get killed. I saw someone else say they were going to shoot arrows at the monster so I asked if I could do that. Nope. I asked what I could do and I was told to cast Magic Missiles, which I said I would do. You can probably guess that the next round, when I was asked what I would di, I proudly stated that I would cast Magic Missiles. Of course I was told that I couldn't do that again, as I had used my one spell for the day. I sat bored to death for the rest of the game, having decided that this was not for me.

The very next day I was doing laundry at the base laundry mat. While loading my washer a man approached and asked if I was one of the people that was playing D&D the night before. I told him that I was. That was when the ordeal began.

This guy started off slowly, but soon built himself up to an undeniable frenzy. He told me that it was not too late to save my immortal sole. I could gather all the books, pencils, clothes, everything I had had on me or worn that night. We could put in in a pile, pour gasoline on it, and burn it. By this time (and I am not exagerating one bit) he was standing atop the washers, yelling praise the Lord, and many other religious phrases amidst his rant. He assured me that if I myself did not have the strength to strike the match to save myself that he would be able to do it for me. Etc., etc., etc.

Well, I didn't even worry about what I had in the washer. I gathered what clothes I had left and beat feet out of there. (I did go back a few hours later to finish my laundry, once the coast was clear.)

Well, I looked at the passion that that person had. I was sure that they were a total whaco (in fact, the man was arrested two days later for going even further overboard with other gamers). My thought was that anything that could drive someone to that sort of effort deserved a closer look. With that, I sought out a different group and, completely without realizing it, played my very first 26 hour marathon game.

That uninformed, misguided person who didn't actually understand anything about the game, but had swallowed someone else's story that it was nothing but evil had gotten me to look more closely than I ever would otherwise. I didn't see something evil, but something entertaining. People were not out to ally themselves with demons, but to feel like heroes for destroying them and hundreds of other imaginary creatures.

I have been playing and DMing the game, through several different versions, ever since. So take heart that, though there are some misguided people out there who believe that they are doing things for good intentions, they are not going to drive everyone away. There are those of us who do not take everything someone tells us at face value, but look for themselves to see the truth.
