That's a very admirable pledge.

If we all remember that just because "you" don't like it and it "didn't feel right" that doesn't mean "nobody should like it" or that "it isn't D&D" and "anyone who does is scum" this place would be a lot better.

Some of us are game authors, first let me say.

The best way to improve the forums as you say is to follow the code of conduct.  It basically says it all, including "be polite and courteous", etc.  If some people don't want to do that, they should be reported and their doing it first shouldn't convince anyone else to follow suit.  There was a terrible exchange tonight between two posters, which ended with one calling the other "crazy and maybe evil".  You shouldn't try to stop it, because you can't.  It's up to the moderators.

I can advise you to try to post "just what you want", though.  Stay positive, and avoid arguments.  Many threads are greatly appreciated by the community here, and everyone should just try to contribute something they like.

I whole heartedly agree.   I have, and will always try my best to be kind and constructive.   The Golden Rule should still apply even on these boards.   "Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you."

It is ok to disagree.   Just disagree with kindness.    Sometimes, because it is difficult to detect tone in writing, posts become more inflamatory than intended.   When that happens, we should apologize and move on.

I love the bumper sticker I've been seeing around my hometown.   It says "Wag more, Bark less."   That helps too (although I'm not implying that we are all dogs.  lol).

I'm all for this. Make the forums great. I'm still here after a few years but came from the Starwars forum when it was alive. The Starwars forum had a few clear elements, which the DnD forum doesn't have yet. Respect for each other and openly sharing resources or material people created for their adventures or game. We were all working together to be friends and help each other. I was a big part of helping to create starwars saga resources and engaging in group projects. I'd be scared to try that in this forum.

What we need here is a team of active moderator with a Big Red Ban Hammer (BRBH for shorts), I'm a member on many boards, some of them routinely discus controversial subjects and we sure don't get that kind of abuse, all because of the BRBG.

(I wonder what the mods' thoughts are...)

I don't take anything personal, but I still may feel the need to defend something I like. Trying to see the logic in the statements of one's "opponent" and giving them the benefit of the doubt that they're onto something, seems to work for me so far. It also helps at times to step away and do something else, turning your next post over in the back of your mind for a day before replying.

Something else I discovered in the communities of past editions like Dragonsfoot, where many seem to have long since stopped paying attention to "new" D&D: if people aren't anxious over where the future of the game is going, they'll be less likely to attack others' playstyles. At Dragonsfoot, they're in their favorite edition all the time and it isn't going anywhere. Especially when a new edition comes, many posters here want to have the current/new version of the game be something that they will love. Bitterness easily comes of that emotional connection. Be mindful of your emotional connections, and how you act because of them.

I hope once 5th edition comes out, things might calm down after awhile(thats a big maybe). Hopefully people who dont like the new edition will go back to their game(whichever one is your fav.). I hope we dont see what happened with 4th(and maybe 3rd also) where they trolled the forums of a editon they hated or sometimes like in the area where I live never even tried it for the most part.

I think it can be achieved if even just a few small guidelines are followed:

* talk about things you like, as opposed to things you don't like.  Nobody thinks 5e is perfect; we all have things about it we wished were a bit different.  But rather than continue to harp over and over on those things, talk about things you do like.

* ease back on the hyperbole.  I've seen statements like "I'm not allowed to post unless I worship the WoTC team and 5e like everyone else?"  This sort of ties to the first point.  Just because someone only focuses on the good things instead of the negative things doesn't mean they are a fanboi of the game.  It means they don't like bringing down the forum with negativity.

* understand that we have a very niche hobby, so for it to grow, it takes all kinds of gamers.  I may not be a charOpper and I may not be a fan of 4e's ruleset, but welcome those players because we're all gaming nerds.  You won't see me go into optimization threads or 4e threads and say how much I don't like those games.  That would be very rude of me.

I think the overall scope and feel of these forums will change significantly once the new edition is released. No more speculation, no more "I really wish the new edition did this or that" - probably will look about how the forums did before 4e was cancelled and 5e was announced: people posting helpful advice, or offering solutions to complaints or difficulties.

Until then, you're going to see speculation, you're going to see argumentation over what the new edition should be, simply because we haven't actually seen the new edition yet.

I blogged about this a while back. Clicky.

The edition wars really need to end, which requires all sides. Both sides need to stop provoking and responding. If someone says something disparaging or incorrect about an edition, it's important to remember that they don't need your favourite edition and their dislike has no impact on your feelings. Don't engage.

WotC themselves aren't helping revitalize the community here by not finishing the forum restructuring promised seven months ago. We don't need playtest forums for a playtest that ended, we don't need a "4e General Forum" with a "Previous Editions" forum ghettoized at the very bottom of the page. A better structure to the forums will encourage discussion.

However, if you want people to come and use your forums, it's important to enable all forms of access. Currently, these forums do not work on iPads. And I'm uncertain of other tablets. Which really hurts visitation.

This forum has been mostly edition wars since its inception, with an occaisional though provoking post or bit of humor, but mostly edition wars.  At first is was 2e vs 3e then 3e vs 4e (it could have been vs 2e too, but all the 2e people left long before) then 4e vs essentials (no longer vs 3e because all 3e folks since had fled) and now it is 5e vs all comers and I'm no longer able to peg who is who or what is what. At least the d20 is still a d20 and orcs are orcs, or at least there were until the cartoon art.  Ugh.

I personally would argue that stricter/more even moderation should be enough to handle the forums. I rarely see the mods do much of anything anymore, outside of the occasional copy paste "Don't break the CoC here is a link" and an outright refusal to discuss it.

We need actual clarity on what is/isn't allowed, and we need people enforcing it consistantly and fairly.

On a similar front, we need an actual place to go do debate the merits of edition v edition, and a blanket ban on that sort of talk is terrible. Throw a sub forum out and call it "The edition wars" and just let people go at it. So long as they stay within the realms of Decency (Defined by the CoC) we should be fine. Then when it comes up in a normal thread the mod can swoop in "There is a subforum for this, go there. No more edition war talk" and a check back the next day or so. If it crops back up, delete posts and start the temp bans.

Also finishing the restructure would be nice. I feel like since the initial gleemax forum migration they have been in a constant state of "Under construction".

If you want forums, you need to support them.

I will enter one rather acid observation.  Take it for what it's worth.  It is my obsevation that all too often those that complain about the "sordid state of these forums" (and not just these particuar forums) are too often a large part of the actual problem.  Enough said.

When I think about online communities I frequent, I think of things in terms of three questions:

1. Are the forums a friendly place to have a discussion?

2. Are interesting discussions going on there?

3. Is there a reason to visit those forums over another? i.e. is the experience there unique enough that I value visiting it and contributing.

Common sense perhaps but the intersection of those three questions might be what the original poster is trying to get at.

Maybe?

I don't know about letting mods go or anything like that, I have no idea how forum mods function, if they are volunteers or paid employees.  I do think that the mods being harsher on people, better organizaion of the forums, and getting one forum section for Q&A by WoTC would go along way to a better forum for all.  One of the things I like about the Savage Worlds forum is the creator of the game has a Q&A thread, you post a question and know one else is allowed to respond, he will get to it and does so very regularly.  It keeps things clear and concise about rules and shows that he cares about the community and his customers.

Always remember that the words that are appearing on a screen belong to an actual, living person and there's probably much more to them than what they express on the internet at this particular moment. If possible, try to find some common ground with those you dissagree with; it helps you to see them as other people. As for trolls, if their goal is to get people upset over something dumb, I try finding a way to move the subject to something less controversial that people might be interested in talking about.

If someone is wrong about something, explain why you dissagree in a way that doesn't feel like an attack. And always acknowledge what they are doing right in your view, even if if's mostly not something you aggree with.

Also, I find that the nicest threads are ones where people are doing something creative, like coming up with a campaign setting or inventing some thing that helps people handle the math for some aspect of adventuring. I reccomend threads like that.

Hello all,

Ordinarily this thread would either be moved to Community Business or closed. However since this is where you all seem to primarily discuss things together I'm going to leave this thread open and here for the time being. In order for that to remain the situation the thread needs to remain polite, positive, and constructive. Please be extremely careful to avoid anything that could be disruptive and to treat each other respectfully. Treat each other humanely. And that includes the ORCs. If you want to complain about moderation in a constructive manner, that's fine. Please avoid disparaging or insulting language and I'm going to have to ask that you folks avoid calling for anyone's firing, either in R&D, web development, or in moderation. For that type of thing you'll have to contact us via the help page.

So far, for the most part, this is being a reasonable and constructive discussion. I'd like to not have to shut it down. Help me out with that goal. I'd offer cookies as an inducement but I'm still working on that cookie downloading  device, so my appreciation and admiration is all I can offer.

Thanks, and carry on,

Monica

People complain about the ORCs? I've never seen an admin here do anything that I really disagreed with.

I really wish people would understand that something like this: "I really don't like this game mechanic, I think it is trash. It's wholly worthless, and only people that play the game in a silly manner really enjoy it" is not trolling. Could the statement be made more eloquently? Sure. Really, just saying that you don't like something is generally not much to discuss - actually backing up your point is better, and backing it up in a way that is generally polite is better yet.

But no matter how rudely put, somebody disagreeing with somebody else does not constitute trolling, doubly-so if it's on-topic discussion. Even changing the topic to something else related to the forums is not trolling - this is done all the time, politely and impolitely, although it is considered good form to make a new thread if there will be whole discussion on another non-thread-related topic.

To improve the vibe here, I would suggest that we post understanding that there is another human being at the other end of the discussion. The capabilities of the internet have unfortunately left us with the side effect of reducing our tact and manners, as we no longer see the physical reaction of the others in the conversation. When you post, I recommend you picture the other person that will be reading this. Would you really state your response as tersely if you were standing two feet away from that person? If not, consider rephrasing in a more polite tone.

As a personal goal, I'm trying to learn how to walk away.

This is hard. I like a good argument and drift easily into the role of Devil's Advocate. And I'm a cynic, so I'm quick to point out problems. But, most importantly, I do not know when to walk away. I cannot disengage from a dicussion. It's a skill I'm currently working to train. I'm grinding ranks in "shut the eff up and walk away".

I'm on an exile from ENWorld for that reasons.

But I need to lurk somewhere, if only to get ideas for my webcomic. It's hard to lovingly mock the hobby/game if I'm not involved in the hobby/game.

This forum would likely be a better place if more of us said "you know what, I won't post that reply." And gave credit to people we're discussing things with, calling out their good ideas and nice points. If every counter-post we made HAD to be a "compliment sandwich" that was two parts positive for every negative thing said.

Heck, you know what, personal promise. Made right here, right now, I'm commiting to making every future discussion post into a compliment sandwich. Feel free to reply to me with a "Dude, compliment sandwich!" if/when I drop the ball and unleash a pure neg post.

(Exceptions for reviews or evaluating house rules/ homebrew content for obvious reasons.)

1)  The forums aren't dying.  A new edition of D&D is set to come out soon, and for everyone who does post regularly there are probably a dozen or more people who prefer to remain silent unless something catches their eye.  Ironblue, for example.  There are a great deal many more readers than posters here, and that shows the community is still active and the forums are useful.

2)  Everyone posting detailed content, should back-up their material in case a thread is unpublished.

3)  We should just be playing the game and talking about it.  Forget about changing other people's views.

If you honestly asked me, I think this place have been getting better. Mostly because most of the 4e fans left, but that's my opinion.

I still remember the days when this forum was toxic and clearly remember some of the most toxic members on the forum, especially during the early playtesting.

I still remember threads that reach 100 pages like "What's is hitpoints?", most of it was endless agruement.

I still remember a thread about balancing classes between combat and social encounters, which I thought was dumb. If I want to social, I'll pick a social class. If I want to fight, I"ll pick a fighting class.

But yes, this forum got better, no doubt.

The mods are pretty lax and pretty fair here. If someone gets way too heated or is outright trolling, his posts will disappear and he'll get temp banned after a number of infractions. Those who think mods don't do enough should report posts that are a problem; if you don't report, you can't hope someone else does for you. If you are reporting posts but no action is taken and if you're the one getting banned and deleted, it's time to reflect a wee bit more.

If you (I am using allways the generic you in this text) keep on bickering about how your feelings have been hurt this forum will not change.

If you judge the present from the past, a real change is not possible.

In my opinion it is required to leave the past behind and focus on the "here and now", if a change is wanted.

And you will have to invest a little good will.

No more than that is needed but also no less.

To the criticism with reference to the moderators.

I really do not envy any ORC on these boards.

If they are to strict I hear you say:    They want to silence all critique.

If they are to lenient I hear you say: They do not do their job properly.

And even worse...this line between not enough and too much is different for every single poster.

You want more presence of moderators, Wizards employees and similar.

Well, first of all we have to make it worth while for them to show up and to get involved.

Yes, I hear some of you say, its their job...but it is not their job to get regularly insulted and worse.

One final rmark to those who can not stop finger pointing.

Did you ever notice that pointing with a finger at somebody else results in three fingers pointing back at yourself.

Create yourself a wonderful day.

The problem here is I see very little genuine good will and I don't think we'll see any for some time.  Frankly that may be too much to ask, but as long as the moderation is fair and neutral and based on the written code of conduct for these forums (and it has been lately), what we have now is probably the best we can hope for.

What I don't want to see is what I see on too many other forums:  moderation being used not (just) to police the forums but to enforce a given point of view.

I still think that there are a number of posters here that actually want the moderation "to enforce what I believe" when they say, "to make the forums a nicer and better place".

I have an even better idea.  Why don't we let the moderators do their jobs (and they have done a good job of late enforcing the written CoC), and stop trying to moderate other posters ourselves?

EDIT:  I am deleting the second sentence because on reflection it can be taken as a direct attack on the dev teams competancy.  That was not my intent.  Rather, I feel (and I am sure there are others) that certain decisions in the design process as well as certain results stemming from them make us wonder about some very basic game design issues have been handled.  Such issues do (or at least can) reflect the competancey of the design team, but should be fair to discuss.

Last I looked I want to play D&D for fun not as a mathmatical exercise. Some sort of BA (English, History, Classics etc) would be more useful to an RPG than math skills. Not that you really need a uni education for RPG design either.

I see a lot of sentiment in word choice. Many people on the web in general like to debate by first posting a one-word sentence: "Wrong." I don't care if the previous post was wrong or not; "well, actually" or "this seems contrary to" or "in fact" may start the same sentiment less confrontationally. I'm not asking people to lie or agree. Neither option nor truth need be fit with a barb.

If one is doing it to "win" an argument, mind that people are less likely to concede things to someone who makes them see red, and that many posters (in my XP at least) ignore two people arguing in a thread and move around them without caring what they're on about.

I think we can leave the moderators (ORCs) to their job, but they treat symptoms; each person should moderate oneself, too, and nip away at the causes.

Pay attention to your character, because it will become your fate."

Is it too much to give you fellow posters the benefit of doubt?

Is it too much to ask for a little bit of good will?

If it is not too much for you (generic you) participate.

Just do not answer if you feel personally attacked by somebody.

I know it is hard and I also have failed in this regard from time to time.

But I promise I will try harder. Because the result will be that those attacks will run empty.

Yes it will become worse at the beginning.

Imagine an archer suddenly not hitting his target any more.

He will redouble his efforts. But if we do not give him a target any more, he will finally give up.

Because what should he shoot on, if there is no target.

Just deny him his stage which he so much needs.

And if that does not help you just remember:

"Do not discuss with an idiot. He will pull you down to his level and then beat you by experience"

I believe that sincere and earnest debate is good even if it occasionally slides into greater conflict.   I respect and like a lot of people that disagree with me on these boards even though at times we've exchanged words.   There are others that I do not.   Being more polite about how they say something isn't likely to improve their standing with me.   I even feel that on occasion the moderators are too heavy handed and disrupt debates that I am following closely (even when not personaly contributing).

It is true that striving to be politer is a good goal.  I believe though that some parties will take certain ideas as impolite just because of the idea.  I think curse words and personal attacks are unnecessary but I never want to stifle another person's idea.   I may disagree and disagree vehemently.   I think worrying about attacks on inanimate objects is overblown.   My own tastes and experiences do not in any way necessarily reflect yours.   They do reflect mine.   That is why we exchange information.

Being polite is good. Oversight is good. Moderating the way they do at the BIG PURPLE sucks. You could tell they played favorites there (especially if your sig was "Old Geezer").

I find most folks here pretty polite, for the most part. There's some inflexibility, brusqueness and (hard to believe I'm saying this in association with geek culture) snootiness here and there, but I feel like that's a fair tradeoff for the amount of knowledge and perspective you can get from just reading the posts. If we could ever get past edition sniping (not sure it's warring anymore) and the occassional one true-wayism, it'd be pristine.  On the whole, though, this is not a bad board. Now, if you're looking for really nice, helpful people, Dragonsfoot is full of 'em. But that has sub-boards for various systems. Here, it's a melting pot of styles trying to make some sense of the next iteration.

When I first started posting on these boards after a LONG absence and period of lurking, I did so with a great deal of trepidation (because of the poor overall condition I saw) and with about three sets of kid-gloves on. In literally the first day this resulted in me being attacked, attempted to be mod'd and accused of various infractions...simply for having a difference of opinion. Actually, that isn't even true..it was for asking questions that one might construe as me having a difference of opinion.

Afterwards, threads I made came under concerted, repeated assault by a select group of posters that would hijack those threads and derail them until locked. Time & time again.

It was at that point that I started receiving PMs from folks that were trying to contribute in the threads (or on the boards in general...) that had had the same things happen to them or just wanted to talk in general without catching massive amounts of flak all around them.

That all got my ire up. Hard. Hence, the snarky, no-nonsense SOB side of me came out. You get more flies with honey than vinegar, to be sure...but when your honey's been whizzed in sometimes all ya got left is vinegar.

I am all for good, solid discussion...but there does seem to be very much an attitude of "Do as I say, not as I do" on the board regarding respecting others, respecting playstyles, respecting opinions and respecting others conversations. Hell, I've been part of gaming communities (and still am) for things like DBZ, Heroclix and fighting games...and some of those have been for money...and they have better communities for discussion. No reason it shouldn't be the case here.

I heavily agree with Polaris on pretty much everything he has said.

It can't be...

"Hey we like Red"

"Cool! We like Blue"

"...damn those Blue guys are really disruptive, aren't they?"

I'm all for good discussion...but when someone starts a thread to say "Hey! I'm willing to help folks with Blue because I use Blue" and it gets flooded with people shouting about how Blue is the devil and the community is silent on this...well, it doesn't make one feel like there's productivity to be had.

I think a lot of people like to jump on a thread that is about one playstyle and take pot shots at it.   If the thread announces itself as about a particular subject that you obviously do not enjoy there is no need to attack the playstyle that does have that interest.   I am guilty of making comments that are likely unnecessary to the thread.  I wouldn't call it an attack but even an off topic comment is not really necessary.  The only time it leads anywhere it's usually bad.

Let's do an example of what I'm talking about....

If I started a thread titled, top down design of D&D campaign worlds.   If you were someone who liked bottom up design or perhaps someone like Iserith who builds it as he goes, then making a comment to that effect wouldn't be worth much.  If it was just a statement, then I'd be okay but still consider it a waste of time.   If it was an attack that derailed the thread then that would be bad.   And I'm not picking on anyone with that example.  The exact opposite could be true.   If the topic was - how to be a more effective No Myth roleplayer, then I should not post anti-comments to the thread.

It's okay if the thread raises the question of whether the idea is good to begin with but if it assumes it there is no need to interrupt the group of people who are having a discussion and agree.

Yagamifire,

Thanks for explaining that so well.  This is what I mean when I say that a fix is really a "kludge" rather than a solution.  A kludge is designed to fix an apparent superficial issue in a system (be it a game, machine, or whatever) rather an underlying solution to make sure that the problem doesn't occure in the first place.  To be sure, Kludges do have their place.  Sometimes a system might be quite structurally sound but there might be one or two isolated places where an unexpected interaction creates an undesirable side effect.  In such a case, a "kludge" is probably OK.    This, IMHO, isn't such a case.

In light of the above post, I feel I should clarify what I mean by it not being a good idea to "take deliberate offense" (or be a "flopper" in basketball parlance).

Say poster A when describing a mechanic/rules/situation used the phrase for effect, "....and then the entire thing crashed and burned."

This is obviously a common expression and I think most people would agree that poster A is not literally refering to burn victims from crashes.

Now imagine poster B who strongly disagrees with poster A responds with something "How dare you make light of the suffering of burn victims in crashes with your insensitive hyperbole!"  That is what I mean by "flopping".  In this (admittedly ridiculous and made up example to illustrate a point), poster B is trying to draw a reaction by deliberately taking offense when there is clearly none intended.

Making the place great?

Well, first some moderation against thread hijacking.  "Hey what do you recommend about mage spellbooks getting destroyed?  I dunno, but IMPROV STYLE is the best because you don't have to worry about it!".

Second, combining threads that are basically trying to give extra weight to an argument by repeating themselves would be good.  "What are hps!? Version 2348920384"

I think Yagami mentioned it earlier... imagine someone makes a thread on alignment, perhaps asking if an alignment shift is called for in a scenario they encountered.  At least nine idiots will have to invade the thread to say "alignment iz dumb don't use it!".

Of course, stopping those things only prevents the debt.  What would be nice is to see modules, articles for dealing with common outcomes, NPCs, world designs, city designs, guild designs, monster designs, etc.

Don't hijack threads with endless 'wall of text' quoting and requoting whilst treating it like a private chatroom for the one other person you are engaged with.

I have lost count of the number of discussions I have commented on only to have my posts rolled over by the tunnel vision of a few posters who ignore everything except the one issue they are currently arguing the toss with the one person they can be bothered to debate with.

If a subject is worth talking about - it's best if we are inclusive - not passively (or actively) exclusive. Look out for people with the odd post or a fresh perspective and draw them in - don't require them to bully their way into the conversation - that just encourages the use of more extreme posts as people try to shout for attention.

I can't imagine what it's like for someone new here - being rolled over by usual suspects and seeing zero responses or engagement - simply moving on with no desire to return.

Then there's the sniping - commenting repeated criticisms on multiple threads without actually adding anything positive or constructive to any of them. There are a few here who seem to make a habit of this - 'debunking', criticising and naysaying everything they disagree with whilst rarely taking a stand on something themselves - because they know they will get the same treatment they are so happy to dish out.

I think a policy of 'if you don't have anything constructive to say, say nothing...' would be better. If you have a valid criticism, back it up with some evidence and a suggested solution. If there s a problem, then at least try to improve matters. What is the point of posting otherwise?

Lastly, but not least - don't build straw men. It is poisonous to the life of a forum, it's petty, and selfish. Moreover, if you don't understand someone's point of view, ask for clarification before you accuse them of building straw men, or worse - accusing them of falsehood.

Respect is easy to lose sight of when your voice is filtered through the safety of a keyboard.

Use this principle - if you wouldn't say it someone's face - don't type it...

To summarise;

  • Be inclusive
  • Try to propose solutions
  • Be respectful

Not hard is it?

1) There is a claim being tossed around that people report posts as a "revenge tactic" against someone they disagree with. Does this ACTUALLY happen? And if so, does it happen often enough to be a problem? I honestly don't think this happens. I suspect that claim is actually just a smokescreen to obscure the real issue at hand. Perhaps I'm wrong about this, but of course we'll probably never know the truth because who would ever admit to doing that?

Personally, I have only ever reported a post for personal attacks or severe thread hijacking. I'm not so petty as to report someone to win an argument. Perhaps other people have done differently? Feel free to comment. (i hope this topic of conversation is okay to have. I am merely trying to refute/validate a claim being made here.)

2) I also think there is a fundamental misunderstanding in the discussion here (actually, probably more than one). Does everyone here understand how one's language affects the tone of their post? Meaning, how the words and phrases you use can make a post sound like an attack? Even if that wasn't your intention?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with people having opposing viewpoints. Healthy discussions are what these forums are supposed to be for. Sharing ideas, even opposing ideas, getting feedback, explaining different points of view, etc. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of that!

However....and this is the big however....when you use inflammatory language, insult the devs (even if it's only implied), and make intentionally vitriolic comments, then you completely change the tone of the conversation. At this point, the healthy discussion becomes contaminated with hate and negativity. And this is exactly what this thread topic was originally about. Your attitude and tone can say a lot more than your actual words.

I like the purpose of this thread, though part of the problem in this forums can certainly be showcased with conversations in this very thread.

My 2 cents on these forums, take it for what it is worth:

What we see are that people on various sides of different issues think that the people on the other side of the issue are somehow being favored, or are using tactics to control discussion. Due to the distrust of the other party, everyone feels compelled to respond in kind. It's a sort of paranoid thinking that doesn't hold up well to neutral analysis.

A lot of the problem posters are actually lone wolf types. I can think of about four people whom I actively avoid discussion with (even if I agree with their views), because of their habit of coming into threads and hijacking. Essentially, if a thread is about using Two-Weapon fighting, but not about it's worth as a game mechanic, one of these WILL come in and make it about that. Similarly with alignment and other issues. This is the worst type of poster, and I feel like 5% of the users of an otherwise great group of knowledgable people make the forum appear more hostile than it is. If you have an agenda and are trying to force a conversation that the original poster obviously didn't want to have, than you are one of these posters.

I can think of several other users of whom I don't consider active hostiles, but still have a skewed view of what is appropriate for the forum. Continually creating threads about the same subject despite being discussed over and over is basically what I'm talking about here. I still discuss with these users, but this can be a tiring exercise when everyone has stated their opinion 5 or more times, and there is no more ground to cover. It becomes obvious that the point of the thread isn't open discussion, but rather the OP trying to legitimize their view. Which shouldn't be an issue. An open forum should mean your view is legitimate despite how many people agree with it, as long as you are being polite and respectful of other people.

One other thing that I see, but is the lowest on the totem pole of problems, are simply people who are negative about the edition. Certain people are just this way, due to not liking the game or because they are the sort of person who are negative about everything. Their viewpoints are filtered through this lense and it's how they're going to communicate. This doesn't bother me, because their opinions are just as legitimate as mine.

I think a lot of people in this thread are talking about these people, however. Honestly, you need thicker skin. People aren't going to like what you like. People are going to be overly critical, whether you think it is appropriate or not. However, being overly critical is not the same as trolling, and it's not breaking the CoC. Many of the so called 'negative' posters are, to me, some of the best people to listen to simply because it provides texture. Do you want an echo chamber of positive opinion? Do you not know how destructive THAT can be? No, people who are often critical of the new information are perfectly fine to me. I feel like what is happening is that you are excited about the new edition, and feel like these people are trying to rain on your parade.

At this point you just need a stiffer upper lip. I am VERY excited about the new edition, but I'm not going to let the (perfectly legitimate) opinions of a poster who's reaction is negative affect that excitement. Instead it is an oppurtunity to discuss and have a jolly good debate.

To summarize: The forums aren't as bad as you think. The negative atmosphere can be linked to a very small few problem posters. The rest of it can be chalked up to people not wanting to hear negative opinions about something they like. Making the forums better is as simple as not taking as seriously.

Good points CelticPaladin.

Whether someone agrees with me or not does not affect whether I think they are a good poster or not.   I like many people who disagree with me often.  I cringe at some of the comments made by people on my side in many debates.   Usually the persons opinion has nothing to do with whether they are a good or bad poster.   If someone is willing to engage and explain their views and be reasonable then I'm all for it.  If not then I'm against it even if your conclusions agree with mine.

The proper use of logic is also a nice to have but I've given up hope for that happening consistently on public forums.

One of the things that really piss me off is the easy with which obvious trolls can derail an entire thread. It ends up not being the troll that cause the bulk of the disruption, but the 20 odd post that respond to the troll. What makes it worse is even after the troll post is removed people continue to discuss the responses people made to the troll. The thing is after the troll posts are delete and the quotes removed its leaves everyone who couldn't use enough self control not to responded to the troll looking like they are the real trolls.

Hey folks,

Calling out other specific posters by name is considered disruptive and those posts/references will be removed. Please also avoid the use of terms that members of a particular community will find offensive, such as "4venger", "balance brigade", or anything of that nature against any of the various fandoms.

Thanks,

guys,

I really don't think a timer would help but I do think people being a little more inclusive in their posting might help.

And surely being more personable and friendly doesn't hury anyone.

When more people start showing up after Next comes out a friendly environment for good discussion might convince some of the new visitors to stick around.

I do actually appreciate and understand your glass half empty point of view on this.

I tend towards cynicism myself.

But if you regard the status quo as less than ideal, and then fail to act based on a consequential prediction of the unlikelihood of change - you essentially fulfill your own prophecy...

It's GOOD to try and therefore catalyse change; it's WORTHY to try and then fail.

I can't point to any merit in predicting failure and doing nothing.

My timer thing was off. I think though there is something there that needs to be looked at. I've seen many discussions here side lined by two people back and forth for PAGES on end that basically amounts to "nu uh" - "uh huh" between them. What to do about it? I have no idea though. It comes down to one of those two reognizing that it needs to stop and get back to the real group discussion that it should be.

Change must happen with each poster, as a set of rules of guidelines on how or when to post is only going so far and after that will have no effect. Posters have to stop taklng everything personally, or as a direct assault on what they may like. They also have to accept they will not change others peoples opinions, no matter how hard they try. And you also have to know when to stop posting on a specific topic and not always have the last word in a conversaton. We all have to extablish limits in reference to our discourse.

The current nature of the forum, because 5E is not released, is to have some type of influence on the final product, however slim those chances may be.

For me the argument: If you look to other forums, they are not better is not a reasonable argument.

Allways set your goals high and strive for the best is far mare reasonable.

How can you expect something to become better when you allways gravitate towards the inferior end of things.

Moaning that this is way things run and saying it has allways been like that will not help to improve things.

Change allways starts somewhere with someone making the fist step.

Why not make this forum so good that it sets a positive example for other forums?

Due to lazyness, non existence of good will, lack of character? I do not know!

Is this forum the best we can hope for? Surely not IMHO!

What this forum is like just depends on us, on each of us, on each and every self.

But "Mr xyz....." does not count. Just you and me.

What to do when a disussion between 2 posters becomes a wall of text?

I think that PMing is a great solution and if PMing seems too much work, too inconvenient or whatever the subject is probably not worth the discussion.

@ Caliburn 101

I did see your post and found it to be really good.

However, I had nothing meaningful to say at that point, so I just kept silent.

Relating to Caliburn's observation: being thoughtful, reasonable, or sometimes just humorous prompts fewer responses than those on the extreme ends of the issue. It's like modern American politics--lots of air time to the screamers (not that I'm saying anyone here screams--just drawing an analogy). It's also time-consuming to track every single person's input once the thread gets lengthy. You start the day engaging in a short conversation. You get back to it say the next day, and there's 11 pages of responses.  Take something like the "rolling to skip roleplaying" discussion, and you have a never-ending loop. I'm not sure whether we actually believe we can change minds around here, but I get the sense that some folks want to try. Sometimes I personally revise what I originally thought, based on the small portion of the thread I see. Most often, though, I scroll the back-n-forth until it becomes obvious we're all going to agree to disagree.

For THIS discussion, how can we make this place great again, I think we've gone from suggestions about how that can be done to should it be done at all. I'm of the belief that this forum tends to be pretty polite, for the most part. I've had much worse experiences at a couple other sites. I'll call out the big purple again on that score. They had their pet posters. I feel like I'll get a more fair shake here than there. Then there was that other rpg site, which was (is) no holds barred. The community sorted things out itself. Got fairly nasty there.

I dunno, folks. I view this place sort like I view the U.S. Congress. Full agreement is an impossibility. Partial agreement is possible. An actual consensus takes times to build. We're not actually here to pass legislation, of course. If we were, though, we'd come around to agreeing a s scant few things, I think. This is the nature of discussion, to hear the views. If nothing more comes out of it, then that's okay. It's better to have one's own view, eyes open about it, then stride out into the world, completely unchallenged. I find myself agreeing with tidbits from just about everyone's argument. In doing so, I clarify my own beliefs and positions. That seems to me enough to accept the less than perfect system of (relatively) open discussion. I find this place has been good for me, when it comes to engaging in this lifelong hobby. And I thank averyone involved for that.

I think the block option should be used sparingly but never using it is probably a mistake.  Some people on these boards never contribute to the discussion.  It's not that you have an opposing opinion.  I welcome opposing opinions and I enjoy a spirited debate.   I do not though appreciate a poster whose sole purpose in life is delivering one liners.   I'll even put up with the occasional one liner if most of the time they contribute tot he discussion.   I have though met some people on here that do nothing but deliver snarky one liners.   Most of them are bitter 4e players who hate anyone who hates 4e.   Those people I just block.  I've found the discussions I do have are better because I block those people especially with the new system that completely hides that they even posted.

I think that Frothsof's comment was a snarky one liner.   I'll leave it at that.   A less inflammatory way to "cheerlead" would be to say "Good post.  I think your arguments are crushing."

Personally I'd rather have less than more moderation.  I don't like personal attacks but I honestly don't care if you want to attack an inanimate object like an edition of a game.  Hate on any edition of D&D you want even my favorite.  I think those who are defensive about their edition should lighten up.   You can love chocolate and someone else can hate it.   It doesn't invalidate your experience.   I'm sure they reason that these types of arguments often devolve into personal attacks at some point and that is their reasoning.

The #1 cause I have seen on the boards for arguments is when someone asks a question on how to fix something or address something puts forth a "I do this and it works for reasons X, Y, Z" and the response is "Well if you did BLOO you wouldn't have to worry about all the other problems of So-and-SO's answer which I am going to insinuate or directly state you HAVE to have with their playstyle which makes it much worse because I do not have those problems. This means you have to defend your playstyle because I've pretty much blatantly called you a fascist. This will totally derail the conversation and put you in a hole it is impossible to dig out of because of my initial accusations. Aaaand go! Also...as soon as you do...HAH! I activate my victim trap card! Now I am going to claim I am victimized because you don't want to stand there and be insulted by me! Score!"

That happens. A lot.

Hi folks,

A few issues I'd like to address: First of all, if you believe content is a violation then you should report it. The reports are indeed  monitored by human beings, 24/7 and are responded to as quickly as possible, the speed at which of course will depend on workflow and volume.

Secondly, this has been covered in previous discussions about the forums before, though I believe those discussions all took place in Community Business, so I'll rehash it here. At this time, ORCs do not do sweeps, they only read and respond to reports. So if you refuse to report something the chances are very high that no moderator will ever see it. I do read the forums regularly, though I don't get to every single corner of the forums every day, and I'm generally not looking for conduct. If I happen upon something I will report it, unless it's a special case like this thread, in which case I'll work on it myself, though I do not issue warns. However, if you feel things you are reporting are being ignored incorrectly, please use the help site to email us about it. Include links to the specific content you think should have been removed. Emailing us saying "The orcs play  favorites and never moderate Dragonette", for example, doesn't give the person reading your complaint anything to really go on. Saying "<link>, <link>, and <link> are examples of Dragonette using vulgarity and trolling. I reported these (approximate date if you can remember) and nothing was done" is a much more useful sort of email.

Thirdly, I'm trying my best to keep this thread open and a fairly free discussion, however you still have to abide by the code of conduct and you cannot name names. If you want to discuss whether something someone posted should have been removed or not, you should not link to the actual post, and you should not name names. You could create an example that does not indicate who made the comments, and that example (as long as it doesn't contain hate speech or vulgarity) could be discussed here.

Thanks for the help,

Monica

Making the forum more user friendly (and just more friendly) is a good idea. As some people have mentioned we may get more visitors here once the new eddition hits and having a helpful and informative forum could help grow the hobby. We don't want to drive people away. An up and down vote button is a good idea. It would help show peoples opinion without folks having to chime in and repeat their position over and over.

Honestly, the last time I can remember the boards being friendly was back around their inception in the late 1990s.  Even then there was a large bit of nastiness, especially in the MasterTools threads.  This is a problem as old as internet forums and I don't see it ever going away.  That's why I prefer smaller communities, and they aren't even immune to this type of behavior.  Call me a cynic, but I think this is all a big waste of time.  Use the tools provided.  Sure it is taking an eyedropper of water out of the sinking ship, but its all that can really be done.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give a heads up that I will be moving this thread to the correct area in a few days, probably on Sunday. I had wanted to give all the D&D Next Gen participants a chance to sound off in this thread and get a discussion going, but technically this is off topic for this particular forum and belongs in D&D Community Business. I'm giving you the heads up because I'm not seeing a way to leave a redirect and I didn't want anyone to think the thread had vanished.

I'm hoping we can continue the conversation there. I think it can be helpful to see how other people view things.

I have had websites with +1/-1 voting on it before. They disabled the -1 vote as people tried to start farming negative reputation. The other problem is the "in group" of voters start bullying the "out" group, think of that Community episode where they had that silly popularity app.

Just saying be careful of what you  wish for.

The best is when new threads illustrate really well some of the individuals that contribute to the toxicity of the forum.

On the creative writing website that I go to the most, each post shows the usernames of the people who LIKEd it, rather than just the number. Would that help here?

My solution is simple:

1. Block anyone who edition wars, or bitches about new editions.

2. Block anyone who harps on and on that D&D is a fad, and the industry is dying.

3. Try to post only in productive "how to" or "character/plot/world' threads.

4. Stop WORRYING about the industry, or peoples opinions about he company.

5. PLAY and Post about playing.

So, this is the last of these style threads I'll post in. Honestly folks, it's like this forum is going through a mid life crisis. Just play and talk about the game. The only reason why it seem so slow/negative now is there is no product on the shelves or pdfs (beyond the adventures) out there.

This will change.

Start worrying more about the games you WILL run and let the company do what it will.

Glad to see this topic didn't "totally" stray into edition fighting again. Might actually have to start regularly posting here if things keep up like this(got tired and left after being attacked constantly for implying 3.x/PF wasn't the greatest thing since sliced bread and that I preferred 4e).

Well at least we have a clean slate with 5E, so everyone is going to have to re-evaluate how the game will represent their favorite edition. And I for one do not see the 5E forum as one sided for any specific editions, however it only takes a couple consistent and frequent posters to give a general impression one may be favored. Maybe they should implement posting limits per day, or at least throttle a poster, if they tend to abuse the privelege and post every couple minutes.

If someone wants to say something about a previous edition in this forum, for D&D Next General Discussion, the question just depends on "do they have a point".  If someone is making a point, no one should have a problem with it.

Hey folks,

As I warned on Thursday this thread has officially been moved to D&D Community Business. Please continue the conversation on improving the forums. I'd also ask that any discussions that aren't about improving the forums, such as topics relating to D&D Next, be moved to their own thread in the relevant forum.

Also remember to stay within the guidelines of the Code of Conduct.

Thanks!

Monica

Hey fellas, seeing as how the news of 5th edition has brought in more traffic from both frequent posters and new people, I think it'd be great if we get this thread going again as well. What can we do to make this place a good place for someone looking into D&D to come to and feel at home?

Personally, I'm going to try and make sure that when I reply to a topic, that I will stay ON topic. I've seen a lot of posters (no call outs) who rather than reply to the OP's post, instead uses the OP's post as an excuse to take a jab at something or someone. I think we can all agree that off topic discussion in a thread gets out of hand here a lot. I don't want to report it because it's not in itself abusive, but if we can all try to stay on topic I think it'll be helpful to our own sanity AS WELL as to any new folks who come in with questions.
