Need help fixing posts broken by forum migration

I have posts that now all of a sudden contain thousands of extra spaces and paragraphs.

I can fix it on the smaller posts by deleting those manually (a lot of work).

 

But I can't fix it on the larger posts as I can't submit the result because apparently the message contains too many characters. I don't understand this, I'm removing a lot of <p>&nbsp;</p> lines (hundreds) so the messages get a lot shorter than they were before.

 

I don't understand why the forum added the hundreds of lines of <p>&nbsp;</p> in the first place.

 

Any help would be welcome.
