Hiya and welcome to the game !

Well id go along to the shop and get involved in one of the games there if possible to get a feel for the game amd how it plays.

Pick up one of the essentials books, Heroes of the Fallen Lands or Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms (or both if you have the spare cash) along with the Rules Compendium. This way you will have all the rules and enough character creation stuff to keep you involved for some time. Over time if you want to try more "advanced" characters or more options you can pick up some of the pre essentials rule books like PHB1, 2 or 3 but remember they have had several updates you can get for free from the WOTC website.

Oh and dont forget to pick up a set of dice whilst in the store !

It depends on whether you like options or if you just want to jump into the game.

If you like plenty of options I'd direct you to PHB1 + PHB2 and/or PHB3.

If you get confused with too many options go for Rules compendium and Hot{F/K}.
