| #1cmdlukeJul 17, 2009 11:05:12 | I just got an email supposedly from Wizards of the Coast saying my forum account hasn't been logged into for over a year and it may be deleted. I am on these boards almost every day. anyone else get this email? Here is the text from the email:
|
| #2ShadoJul 17, 2009 11:05:48 | I just received the following e-mail:Dear Wizards Forums Account Holder- My initial thought was that it was someone trying to steal my account details, as the possibility that I haven't logged in during the past year is absurd. I'm logged in on multiple computers weekly. Anyone receive these? |
| #3HerrozerroJul 17, 2009 11:06:48 | i just got the email as well, im waiting cust serv reply |
| #4MockJul 17, 2009 11:07:41 | I just received the message also. I'm a regular here. I suspect it may be phishing, but perhaps it's some sort of latent Gleemax thing that suddenly woke up. |
| #5sotp_seamusJul 17, 2009 11:12:31 | Just got the very same message. When I clicked on the 'Click here to reactivate' link, it sent me to the Wizards forum page. Sounds like a glitch, although I'll be incredibly upset if my account gets deleted. |
| #6jeffeppJul 17, 2009 11:15:30 | ...Yet, while it has been a few weeks, it has NOT been a year. Any one have any idea what this is about? Is there a bug in there account system? Should I contact someone to let them know that they are sending out these messages in error? If so, who should be contacted? |
| #7egadsJul 17, 2009 11:16:17 | Got the email as well Links point to wizards.custhelp.com seems rather bogus to me Probably looking to snag peoples insider login/passwords |
| #8jaelisJul 17, 2009 11:19:36 | I got it, and clicked the proffered link. It did in fact bring me here. So if it's phishing, its not obvious what they are phishing for. My guess was that our accounts got duplicated somehow when they switched over to Gleemax, and the dup account has been idle. |
| #9gabe1k_dupJul 17, 2009 11:20:07 | I got one too. What's hilarious is that when I get these types of emails from other sites I assume it's phishing. But with the one from Wizards, I assumed their system screwed up. |
| #10HerrozerroJul 17, 2009 11:20:37 | I got it, and clicked the proffered link. It did in fact bring me here. So if it's phishing, its not obvious what they are phishing for. don't trust it, in fact im not sure if i trust you supporting it. |
| #11elzbethJul 17, 2009 11:21:29 | Just got the very same message. When I clicked on the 'Click here to reactivate' link, it sent me to the Wizards forum page. Sounds like a glitch, although I'll be incredibly upset if my account gets deleted. I got this message, too. But since I logged in yesterday, phishing was on my mind and I avoided clicking through the links to log in. ![]() The forums were taking forever to load and I couldn't reply for a few minutes, so maybe it's just a glitch (I hope so!). |
| #12jeffeppJul 17, 2009 11:21:36 | I just started a thread on the same subject, at the same time as this one. I have no problem with a mod merging mine with this one. Annnny Hoo, there has to be something glitched up in there system. |
| #13aberzanzoraxJul 17, 2009 11:21:40 | I got this email:Important information about your Wizards of the Coast forums account I have logged into my account a TON over the last year, and did so yesterday as well. Phishing scam or WotC snafu? I dunno. BUT I AIN'T REPLYING TO IT. |
| #14ZherogJul 17, 2009 11:21:54 | I've also received the e-mail, and I'm here nearly every day. I've contacted Customer Service to try to determine what's going on. |
| #15sotp_seamusJul 17, 2009 11:22:47 | I just called CustServ, and they said by some fluke, they emailed it to everybody. They told me that, as long as I've logged in recently (and I have), there'll be no issue. Looks like it was just a house-cleaning eff^. |
| #16NaseruJul 17, 2009 11:24:17 | i got this email today. But first "You last visited: 07-15-09 at 09:00 PM" and second i havent had this account for a year. i dont even think i have had this account for 6 months. |
| #17ShadoJul 17, 2009 11:26:26 | I just called CustServ, and they said by some fluke, they emailed it to everybody. They told me that, as long as I've logged in recently (and I have), there'll be no issue. Is it weird that I feel better knowing someone/something screwed up? :P |
| #18doneisiJul 17, 2009 11:26:53 | WotC went through a time warp sending them roughly 1 year into the future. I got one too. |
| #19paradoxes9Jul 17, 2009 11:27:18 | I doubt this is phishing lol - who cares about our passwords for this site? I just think it's an error. |
| #20celloshaneJul 17, 2009 11:27:54 | I got it to, and like Aberzanzorax I'm here practically every day. According to the other thread: I just called CustServ, and they said by some fluke, they emailed it to everybody. They told me that, as long as I've logged in recently (and I have), there'll be no issue. |
| #21HerrozerroJul 17, 2009 11:28:47 | I doubt this is fishing lol - who cares about our passwords for this site? I just think it's an error. im not sure... maybe the people who have DDI subscriptions? |
| #22paradoxes9Jul 17, 2009 11:33:00 | Looking back at the email, I'm positive it's legit, and I've seen some extremely well done phishing mails that were supposed to be from PayPal. There's always something they do slightly wrong that tips you off - I'm sure this is just an error. I'm not DDI anyway, so if I'm wrong, BFD.;) |
| #23PhobosJul 17, 2009 11:33:03 | Same with me, to the e-mail I use to log in with, and I am logged in with, right now. I'm here daily. |
| #24zombie_babiesJul 17, 2009 11:33:30 | Is it weird that I feel better knowing someone/something screwed up? Not at all. See, this means we shouldn't have to go through all sorts of BS to get the problem fixed. Well, at least that's how it looks. The reality of the situation remains to be seen. :P I got my email while I was logged in. Kind of a 'wtf' moment. ;) |
| #25zaihajJul 17, 2009 11:40:30 | Same here... |
| #26ZherogJul 17, 2009 11:41:45 | I just received an e-mail back from Customer Service that says the same basic thing as sotp learned on the phone. |
| #27SnoozeJul 17, 2009 11:49:00 | I got the same email as well. When did we all redo our accounts for the Gleemax switchover? Was that just about say, a year ago? I wonder if our "old" accounts (from before the switchover) are still in the system somewhere, and since we're all using our "new" accounts, they're sitting idle? |
| #28surbrusJul 17, 2009 11:54:24 | It must be a bug, I was about to report on the forum as well. Browsing the DnD forum and get that email, saying that I haven't logged in for over a year... funny thing is, my account is not even a year old... hell, I have barely even played DnD for an entire year :P |
| #29Mengu74Jul 17, 2009 11:55:37 | It doesn't look like fishing, all the links are legit. Clearly an error. Let's try not to all email them and ask. Just ignore it. |
| #30shadrachtJul 17, 2009 11:59:42 | I, too received the same e-mail. This followed a period where the login server wouldn't work, and then I was apparently logged in, but it refused to acknowledge this fact. |
| #31serphetJul 17, 2009 12:00:19 | legit, the forums went down for a second around the time it was sent. |
| #32abyssaldeathJul 17, 2009 12:02:13 | legit, the forums went down for a second around the time it was sent. Cool that wasn't just me then. |
| #33Kevin_Andrew_MurphyJul 17, 2009 12:21:53 | Same problem here, and along with that, an inane "July 21st" deadline to reactivate my account. Hello, WotC, it's convention season. I was just out of town for ten days, and I'm off to Comicon next week, and when that's going on, I have better things to do than log in to forums because some incompetent programmer got their electronic knickers in a twist. I should probably ask the booth staff at Comicon in person. I'm certain they won't know, but I'm betting it will get back to the person responsible. |
| #34poseidon88Jul 17, 2009 12:33:24 | It was a goof. They've already sent out a retraction. Move along. Nothing to see here. ;) |
| #35DareusJul 17, 2009 12:36:24 | I got one also and I am on almost everyday at least once. ![]() |
| #36cmdlukeJul 17, 2009 12:41:09 | Its officially a glitch. Just got another email from them. Please disregard the below email that you received today regarding your forums account. This email mistakenly went out to active members instead of inactive members. |
| #37kvoradJul 17, 2009 12:51:14 | ![]() |
| #38zombie_babiesJul 17, 2009 12:51:28 | In case anyone missed this, here's some more info. |
| #39KingNewbsJul 17, 2009 12:58:11 | My initial thought was that it was someone trying to steal my account details It's a very good thought, especially since the links in that email don't go to an official wizards site. Instead, they go to http://wizards.custhelp.com/rd?1=AvcG~wr6Dv8SgDD7GoEe~yL~Jvsq~xn~&2=282 which, as far as I know, could be anything. Turns out if you click them you get redirected to the wizards webpage... but I only clicked them AFTER I saw this post, just to see what would happen. If anyone from wizards is watching this thread, please get that fixed. "custhelp.com" looks like a scam at first glance to anyone who knows what to look for. Plus the fact that the email originates from yet another unknown entity, "rightnowtech" makes it seem even more suspicious. Maybe I'm too paranoid about phishing, but you'd think a third-party customer service firm would use official email addresses from the company they're representing before asking that company's users to click on some links to provide their login and password. This is why phishing is such a successful enterprise all over the world, because the legitimate emails look the same as the illegitimate ones. |
| #40zombie_babiesJul 17, 2009 13:01:15 | Clarification emails seem to have been sent:Please disregard the below email that you received today regarding your forums account. This email mistakenly went out to active members instead of inactive members. |
| #41drackcoveJul 17, 2009 13:06:41 | lol got both emails. |
| #42ZherogJul 17, 2009 13:46:41 | It's a very good thought, especially since the links in that email don't go to an official wizards site. All of these are great points. For those who use the help system, these things look normal; for those who've never logged into the Customer Service site, they certainly have the Hallmarks of a phishing scam. Anybody can access the customer service site by scrolling to the bottom of any forum page and clicking the "Contact Us" link. The login and password for that site should be the same as your forum account. Once you're in there, you'll see the URL and see the RightNowTech logo on the page. |
| #43ArtifactJul 17, 2009 15:02:41 | Just thought I'd post this, in case anyone is having problems logging in since the emails have been sent out. I was logged out today and the log-in server didn't work for me, at first. I had been logged in for 2 weeks, so being logged out was out of the ordinary. I basically cleaned house on the PC: Deleted all 'cookies', cleaned up the hardrive of odds-n-end online files, erased 'online history', and so on. Then, when I came to the forums, I was logged out but was able to log back in without a hitch. So, if you've been logged out and are reading this post as a 'guest' ;), try cleaning house first, then come back and try signing in. |
| #44serphetJul 17, 2009 15:05:39 | it simply fixed itself after 30 mins for myself. |
| #45Xaielao2Jul 17, 2009 15:24:44 | I got the e-mail and then another saying it was erroneously sent to those with active accounts instead of those with inactive accounts as it was intended, and to ignore the first e-mail. |
| #46CoarseDragonJul 17, 2009 16:28:47 | :whatsthis Glad that's over. |
| #47ArtifactJul 17, 2009 16:43:09 | @Xaielao: What are you sayin' with your sig (the latter part at least) :P? Just curious, I've noticed it a few times now. Am I the only one who's wondering what's up? |
| #48cartiganJul 17, 2009 17:04:09 | This is the kind of thing that happens when some one accidentally uses a 1 instead of 0. |
| #49sotp_seamusJul 17, 2009 17:18:37 | I'll bet you feel really silly now, after getting the clarification email... |
| #50humanmindJul 17, 2009 17:20:09 | I just got this e-mail. Weird thing is I haven't even been on here for a year. |
| #51sockmonkey66Jul 17, 2009 20:32:10 | Yeah, I angsted for a couple hours before it occured to me to delete cookies. :embarrass |
| #52adamgibbonsJul 17, 2009 21:48:56 | I got it as well. Then a short time later I got an email saying it was accidently sent to some people who were activate and to disregard the first email. |
| #53ryymeJul 17, 2009 23:35:35 | I doubt this is phishing lol - who cares about our passwords for this site? I just think it's an error. It's not so much this site that people are phishing for but passwords. Often times people will use the same passwords on multiple sites. So someone gets your password to this site and uses it to try and hack into you bank account or other accounts you have that are equally as damaging if in the wrong hands. |
| #54stoneshapeJul 18, 2009 11:08:33 | Well, it appears I'm back on the boards. Had to fill in some more info. Still strange esp. for the frequent posters. |
| #55warrlJul 18, 2009 21:18:22 | I doubt this is phishing lol - who cares about our passwords for this site? I just think it's an error. Lots of people use a single ID and password for everything. So if you (a hacker) get the ID and password and then start guessing where they log into... (I do have a single ID and password... for about a half-dozen BULLETIN BOARDS. All my financials and anything else I would really care to secure is tucked away safely behind other security codes.) Alternatively, you could use the link to plant a keylogger on their machine (and then redirect them to where you claimed your link would take them)... |
| #56susannymnJul 22, 2009 1:56:42 | Got another one today:Dear Wizards Forums Account Holder- I received the original one of these, followed shortly thereafter by the correction e-mail. This time, no correction e-mail. Curiouser and curiouser... ![]() |
