While it is natural for the topic of a thread to drift, even as far as to a topic that has nothing to do with the original post. When someone comes out with a Left Fielder it can very quickly move the thread into a direction that is barely related to the conversation.

Now most times I've seen this it doesn't appear to be intentional. Someone makes a interesting off topic comment and others naturally pick up the comment and start to talk about it. Now in these cases it is not necessary to derail the thread to keep discussing the new topic. I have more than once started a new thread and cross linked it with an old one to avoid derailing.

Good advice. It is something I have caught (usually too late) myself doing.

Agreed, thread derailing is bad.
