Why? Because it irks me a little bit that my 23,000+ post count dropped to below 5,700 with the new Boards and there doesn't seem to be any reason for it. You see, post count is unimportant to me until someone else makes it important. Listing post counts in everybody's posts makes it important. I would like my post count listing to reflect my post count.
Yeah, it's selfish, and in the grand scheme of things not important at all. Except to me.

I know the reason. Archived posts where not transfered to the new forum and as such are not counted.
(Although I'm still in favor of not having post counts displayed at all.)
I actually kind of like the post counts. It gives me a decent excuse for an Over 9000 joke when a poster hit's that Dubious Honor of post count.

I agree with Lhockee. A high post count or a join date from way back in the day doesn't necessarily mean anything by itself. And before anyone mentions it, yes I know my post count isn't anywhere near the likes of Seeker or yourself, although I have been on here for several years now.
If it doesn't mean anything, it doesn't mean anything. And you're right, it doesn't mean anything. Which means that there's nothing wrong with displaying it. If it doesn't mean anything, what can it do?
But it does mean something once it is displayed. It may mean different things to different people, and it may mean nothing to some people, but it does mean something.
- Some may ascribe to it a level of respect. Others, a derision of "you have no life".
- To some it shows "this guy managed to post that much without getting banned" and to others it may say "this guy knows how to toe the line".
- To some, it says "so few posts in so much time means this person speaks only when it is important. To others, the same ratio may say "lurker".
- To some, it is simply an opportunity to say congrats when a milestone is crossed.
For me, it shows my level of participation over the 9 years I have been on the Boards. Having it drop from over 23,000 to under 6,000 because the admins didn't count the archived posts is frustrating. It feels similar to not having the grades count toward GPA when transfering credits from one college to another.
It's posted, so post it accurately.

Post count isn't as bad as forum rep that some places use though. Rep is the ultimate bad idea.
Join date is ok, lets a person know if you can be assumed to be familiar with the forum. But it has limitations as clearly some are older members than their join date indicates for various reasons.
I'm glad we appear to have no 'labels' as they too are just dreadful epenis options. People end up posting just to get rid of a newbie label.

Post counts don't matter. I used to have 6000+ posts, then they changed the forums a couple times and it dropped to 2500+ posts. Then they made the latest change, and now I apparently have only posted 160 time in almost 9 years on the boards.
