There has been an in party duel in an arena recently, I had used a bestow curse spell on a barbarian robot construct. Attribute of the curse is, first the opponent must make a wisdom saving throw , on a failed save target is cursed and must make another wisdom saving throw each time his/her turn to attack comes up. If that saving throw is a success he/she is allowed to perform an attack without restrictions, if failed no action that turn and must wait for another turn.
To my knowledge curse effects can only be removed magically like remove curse, restoration etc. and I'm pretty positive that bestow curse spell persists through death.
So our DM, used the barbarian's "return from death" ability, so he said, by shutting down the system(literally killing himself on his own) and powering up again (yeah I know it feels really cheap when its a robot barbarian), and that effect actually canceled out my curse and I lost the duel, he claimed that status effects are canceled when the target died and that is why he did that. I have searched many threads and managed to find out a discussion that most people said curse effects still continues even the target dies and gets ressurected.
I have demanded a rematch of that duel, but to be able to do that I must make sure Curse effects persist through death. Please people with knowledge about it, help. |

If the ability does not state that it removes status effects, then it does not. However, it sounds like this "robot barbarian" is a house creation, thus there is no RAW to refer to. Insted, it works however your DM declares. In fact, no matter how the rules are written, it works however your DM declares. People in the forums can tell you how they would interpret the rules, or what they would do if they were your DM. They aren't though. Your DM is your DM. You can bring back forum posts saying what other DMs would do, but in the end, the ruling is between you and your DM. If you feel you're character's abilities are being unfairly mitigated, talk to the DM. Personally, the angle I would go from is that if the robot 'died', then you won the duel before he came back in the first place. I've never heard of a ruling where dying in a duel doesn't mean you lost. Rezzing generally doesn't make it so that you didn't die, it means you lost but can continue living anyways. In all of these though, the rules are written to be interpreted by a DM to fit the situation, or even ignored as the DM determines is best. I would say the robot lost when it died. What I say doesn't matter though. What you, your group, and your DM say are all that matter. |
