Question about online D&D

Apr 08, 2011 19:35:25 Hello all. I come to you with a question.
I have a few friends who are going to college in different states, but I want to hold a campaign online for them, I just can't figure out the best way how. Maybe there's already a thread on this, but I actually *did* look for it, and if it's there then I was searching for the wrong keywords.

Anyway, I thought of using AIM, but that might prove to get a little annoying. Is there anything you guys can suggest for me?

VTT was supposed to be launched with 4e... was in all the books as a tool that was supposed to be released, hmmm... all before recession, so who knows... but when it does... its gonna look awesome ( try looking for the demo video, its on a multi-touch $8,000 table top though )

Apr 09, 2011 16:55:11 you want an online whitboard (like gotomeeting) or a virtual table top (maptools is the most common free one, screenmonkey, d20pro, among others) to visualize maps/tokens
and if not included some speech tool, such as skype, ventrillo, teamspeak, google voice, aim speak.

Maptool is an excellent virtual tabletop. It is pretty easy to get it started and using basic functions, and if you want to really learn more about the program there is a lot you can do with it. The site has some video tutorials that are extremely helpful to get you started.

I recommend tokentool because it lets you quickly make more tokens for maptool (maptool comes with a small set of basic tokens if you don't want to bother with this, however) from any picture.

I've been using both programs for years since I have long been separated from my gaming group.

The original puffed out of existence when the company that WotC hired to make it went under. The new one is different. I think that it in now in open beta testing, but I do not know where to sign up for it.
