#5 Style75 May 31, 2013 11:47:22	Sad to hear, fans of science fiction and fantasy have lost a fantastic author. He did, however, have a long and full life and his books will be there to inspire us forever. If you are a fan of D&D and have not yet read the Dying Earth series, you really owe it to yourself to do so. It reads like some of the greatest D&D adventures, yet predates the publication of the Lord of the Rings by 4 years and OD&D by 27 years. The Dying Earth was obviously one of the greatest influences on Gary Gygax because you can see so many of the D&D tropes in this book:  memorized magic spells, spell names (ex. prismatic spray), the importance of magic items, the role of demons and devils, ruined civilizations and "dungeons" to explore, evil traps, alternate planes of existence, plus plenty more. Awesome books, great author. Thanks Jack Vance, you were one of the best.
