I am assuming this has been mentioned before, but dang it, I want to voice my dissatisfaction with it too.

What precisely is the deal with the forums in use by WOTC?

I can't think of a single example of a single forum be it small large private or company based that can't allow me to keep signed in.

It's both annoying, and it's also a barrier.
I might have contributed a lot more, but some days it comes to the point where I have just decided "nah the forums are not worth it right now".

It never used to be. It happened about the time they moved to gleemax. I think when I made a comment about it, the polite suggestion (by Zherog, himself, I believe) boiled down to "use Firefox." Which I have declined from doing, since I don't feel I should have to fart about changing my browser solely for the sake of one website who managed to make themselves less user-friendly. (And I use the boards much less frequently than I used to now anyway).

Still, it is a pain.

I already use firefox, but I'm still inexplicably booted from being signed in at random points during the week. Not even every second week, every few days.

I am using firefox and I also have to sign in every two weeks. Was there something in particular you needed to do with firefox?

It's not just having firefox that was the proposed solution.

It was downloading an extension for firefox that lets you edit cookies and changing the forum's login cookie's expiration date from 2 week to something crazy like 100 years.

Yeah. That. Which seems an awful lot of faff to do when every other forum I have personally encountered doesn't...

I have firefox myself, and i haven't gone through the trouble, cause it just doesn't both me enough.

Incidentally, sometimes, when I get to the page with all the forums for the different games, it'll tell me I'm not logged in, even though it hasn't been nearly two weeks yet, and then when I go into the D&D forums, it turns out I really am logged in, so if you think you should be logged in and you're not, maybe click a link somewhere?

I don't understand. It's 30 seconds out of the day, why does it make people so angry?

Because it's pointless. Things that are pointless are irritating to people, no matter how little time it takes to do them.

And for what?

I have a similar problem. I have to reset my password every time I need to log in. If I change my password, it lets me stay logged in after that change but once I log out, I have to go through the "Forgot Password" process.

Are you sure it's the forums and not just the way your computer is handling cookies? I used to have a problem where once my two weeks ran out when I tried to load the site it would say that I couln't connect with one of those 404 or 401 problems. For a while I thought the site was down but then I realised it was something to do with my high level of security that had on my browser. I lowered it and have never had problems since.

I don't know whether this will help as maybe it is the files on their server being not quite right but maybe have a play around with your security level.

If you don't care about this profile you could cancel membership and then sign up again. I know you shouldn't have to do this but it seems odd that these problems only affect a few people while the rest on us have no problem at all.

Could be your AV software, as well. Some of 'em eat cookies. Had this problem with Symantec, and my group of friends has taken to calling it the cookie monster.

Last I checked that option went out the window when gleemax took over.

Looks to me like it works just fine.

Up at the top, click on My Account -> My User Control Panel

Once there, the "settings and options" section in the left hand menu will have a link for Edit E-mail and Password. Click it. You'll get a screen that says:

You can no longer make changes to some of your account properties here in Forums; instead, use the account management tool on accounts.gleemax.com to change your password, profile and more.

The accounts.gleemax.com is a link; click it, and log in there with the same e-mail address and password you use for the forum.

Once on that screen, there'll be a link for change password. Click that and answer the security question. That should bring you to a screen where you enter your old password and select a new one.

Now, I didn't actually change my password, so maybe it doesn't actually work. But up to that point, everything works fine.

So it seems fairly apparent, that Gleemax is the weak link, because as I mentioned, I have NEVER had the much hassle on a forum before.

I use firefox, and I am also a veteran forum user and I've been on more forums than I can recall. Not once before have I had THIS much hassle getting in to a forum.

I'm only here now because I seem to have found an unattended side door to the place. I don't have any problem with cookies either btw. My AV is not the problem additionally.

I think Gleemax simply doesn't know anything worth knowing about forum software.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/573

A link to the previously mentioned firefox plugin, the cookie editor.

Just download it and install, go to Tools, Cookie Editor, and then find the cookie named AuthPlanetPro for gleemax, and then edit the expiration date for sometime in, say, 3009.

Just tried that now, but whatever I change the expiration date to it doesn't seem to update the cookie. Even after restarting firefox the expiration date stays at two weeks.

This is with Firefox 3.0.5 on Windows XP. I have to assume that the addon doesn't work any more.

Every time I tried using it, it wouldn't sign me in and I'd have to change my password because it would forget it. It's irritating, I just prefer to type my password and email.

I remember before the great Gleemax crisis of '08. It was like living in the garden of Eden, except my homebrews were crappy. :P

Anyway, how long would it take to change the cookie's lifespan from 14 days to 9001 years?

Make sure you click "New expiration date" instead of trying to edit the one already set, I had the same problem when I first started using it.

My solution: Roboform

www.roboform.com

75 different message boards and web sites that I visit, all with a unique password, all managed by roboform. If you're a forum junkie, it's indispensable.

Yes, one way to deal with a problem is to tell customers to simply shut-up and deal with it, that's true. Or simply ignore them.

However, my motto is "compete or die". Ya never know when some one might come along and build a better forum, and the people at Gleemax who think like "Free1983" will be wondering why those pretty pink slips are in their inbox.

I just wanted to add my voice to this. Having to log in every second week is annoying. It also keeps me from posting from work, since that would make me have to log in again when I get back home. Hence much less posting.

No it doesn't. I remain logged in both at home and at work without any problem in that regard.

Yeah. I'm connected on my phone, this OS, my Windows boot, and my BSD boot. All of them set to auto-login. And I only have to do the every two weeks re-log.

Ermmmm, nope.

I am usually logged in through home and work. Home remains logged in all the time, and I log in at work every morning, with nary a problem.

On the flip side, while at work, it works fine, but at home, across at least two browsers, it can't even seem to decide whether or not I'm logged in. Sometimes on the same day beginning a 2-week period, I'll go to the forum, and it'll act like I'm logged out. Sometimes if I go to a subforum, I'm logged in. Sometimes not; on those times, a refresh sometimes clears it, sometimes not. This place is the only forum that occurs in.

I've had that problem, KD. Knock on wood, I seem to have resolved it. When I was actually logged in, I physically logged out. Then I went and deleted any cookie in my browser from wizards or gleemax, and then logged back in. That seemed to resolve my issue with that.

edit: No, that wasn't the answer! Here's what resolved that. Check your bookmark. Is it going to forums.gleemax.com or boards1.wizards.com? If the latter is your bookmark, it'll cause the problem you're experiencing, because of something or other with the redirect. Change it to forums.gleemax.com and your problem should disappear.

I also can't change my password and have to find my assigned one or get a new one emailed to me every time I want to sign in. My solution is that I lurk and seldom post. Easier than Firefix.

Well, you're supposed to be able to change your password.
Ths tandard proceeder, is After that you should be allowed to change it after you answer the security question.

If this doesn't work try e-mailing Customer Service.

It is supposed to be like that for safety reasons. You have to log in every so often so you are less likly to get hacked.

I already expressed my feelings on the issue of the "safety" explanation for the login cookie expiration elsewhere, but I think it's worth reposting.
Except that as an actual security measure, it's fairly useless. Two weeks, or even one, is far, far more than enough time for some random person to completely ruin your reputation online and get your account irrevocably banned. Heck, they can do it in less than a day, less than an hour if they're industrious.

The only people being protected in any way by this are those who:
 • Are using a public computer.
 • Check the stay-logged-in box.
 • Don't log out.

, and only when someone else uses that same computer two weeks or more later to access the boards, and even then only when that someone else is malicious or mischievous enough to actually mess the first person up given the opportunity. I'd say that's pretty bloody unlikely.

How many counts of malicious hijackery due to login cookies have you ever even heard of on any site with a permanent login? Not many, because it doesn't arise even somewhat often.

If account security was a truly serious concern, you would be absolutely required to log in every time you came to the site, and if it was really critical, every time you performed any action on the site. Obviously, it's not; absolutely nothing is at stake on this site other than what you consciously decide to put at stake.

I don't like this "feature". I believe the convenience of the vast, vast majority of responsible users who want to remain logged in is far more important than the security of the very, very few who would knowingly choose to remain logged in at public computers when there would be significant harm in someone hijacking their account and who are absentminded or uncaring enough to not log out.

Sure, it's just a tiny inconvenience in the grand scheme. But it's an inconvenience that did not used to exist, does not accomplish its stated purpose in any effective manner, and the problem that the inconvenience is supposed to solve can quite likely be more effectively dealt with through other, less inconveniencing means.
People can do allot more harm with the personal info on the account. I would rather sign in to my accounts every time then risk that. This is the only one I stay logged in on and that is just because there is not that much info they could get. It is better to limit how much inf you put on accounts anyway.
