| #1ChimericPhaseJul 07, 2009 18:57:44 | As suggested by Wrecan, I've brought my suggestion from this thread here.
|
| #2xxphilosopherxxJul 07, 2009 19:34:05 | I agree! Not 10 seconds ago i was thinking, "how would a DM re-implement poisoncrafting rules from the old BoVD, using the 4e design philosophy?" My answer, of course, was skill challenges. They are so useful but seem to be neglected. We need to have all aspects of 4e gameply somewhat equally represented; a task that would be more easily accomplished if non-combat aspects of the game, particularly skills and skill challenges, had their own forums. |
| #3Seeker95Jul 07, 2009 20:37:04 | I am rather conservative (read: opposed) in my approach to Boards expansions, yet with this proposal, I am in agreement. |
| #4ChimericPhaseJul 07, 2009 21:45:26 | Yay! But seriously, if traps can get their own thing, why not skill challenges? More than once I have had a question about skill challenges, but found no useful thread on the forum search. I was recently thinking about posting a skill challenge question when this lack of skill subforum snatched my attention. |
| #5ChimericPhaseJul 08, 2009 22:46:36 | -_- I see the mods moved my other thread... which is silly because it makes me look like a double poster in here. ah well. I'd like to say to Wotc, although not a lot of people have responded yet - please still seriously consider this proposal! I listened to the podcast about skill challenges. Bring skill challenges to people's awareness and give it a place to be discussed. People will be inclined to keep doing things the old way, but if people could easily participate in discussions, collaborate, and critique skills and challenges they'd be less hesitant about it. |
| #6emryysJul 08, 2009 22:50:25 | Another vote here! ![]() |
| #7serphetJul 08, 2009 23:14:41 | this would prove very conductive towards the advancement in skill challenge design theory. |
| #8hotheadJul 08, 2009 23:38:38 | I agree, skill challenges is a great candidate for it's own forum. Count my vote yes!:D |
| #9jlaurhughes_dupJul 09, 2009 0:03:47 | You have my vote too. And to the Poisonmaking challenge thoughts, I would like to suggest use of the Nature Skill in the challenge, for other sources of the base for the poisons(Hydra or Dragon), it could be one of the other skills(Arcana, Dungeoneering, or Religion - based on the source). |
| #10runecasterJul 09, 2009 0:04:03 | YES YES YES... Skill Challenges are a great addition to the game and deserve thier own subforum! |
| #11jlaurhughes_dupJul 09, 2009 0:12:16 | YES YES YES... Skill Challenges are a great addition to the game and deserve thier own subforum! Skill challenges were there in 3e/3.5 just not really as recognized as they are in this edition. |
| #12chaosfangJul 09, 2009 4:24:12 | 4e skills & skill challenges? I agree; heck, let's include ability challenges too and make it a challenges forum! They put in Streetwise and all those nifty skill checks... but since we aren't limited to what the core books tell use those skills can do -- right? -- I say we should have a forum dedicated to allowing us to make full use of these skills. And while they're at it, maybe more help on how to be able to roleplay in 4e as well as - if not better than - 3.x when it came to non-combat things (that may or may not need a check) is greatly appreciated... like maybe crafting or whitewater rafting? |
| #13Matt_JamesJul 09, 2009 6:45:22 | I have some killer Skill Challenges written up that I am sure others would love to use in their campaigns. |
| #14televarJul 09, 2009 20:10:26 | I would like to see this... Me and my group just fumble though the skill challenges because... well I dont know why. Its always a mess for some reason though. Forum help would be a plus! |
| #15ChimericPhaseJul 09, 2009 21:27:49 | I'd like to keep the momentum going, so I invite people to keep an eye for skill threads and invite other people to render their opinion here. I added a link to my signature, I hope it brings more voices to this cause. |
| #16lynadianyaJul 09, 2009 21:41:08 | I agree. I am always looking for help on skill challenges but I too have noticed the lack of a specific place for them. A new skill challenge sub forum would be great!! |
| #17CentauriJul 09, 2009 22:17:29 | I'm a tad worried that it would become a dumping ground for those who like to rant about the 4th Edition skill challenge guidelines, but I'm for such a section in principle. |
| #18WebsterJul 09, 2009 22:25:28 | I'll put the request in. |
| #19hotheadJul 09, 2009 22:25:53 | I'm a tad worried that it would become a dumping ground for those who like to rant about the 4th Edition skill challenge guidelines, but I'm for such a section in principle. That could be said about any of the subforums! I go on any of them and there are ranters on each and every one! ![]() |
| #20mudbunnyJul 09, 2009 22:30:19 | I'm a tad worried that it would become a dumping ground for those who like to rant about the 4th Edition skill challenge guidelines, but I'm for such a section in principle. The trick to dealing with people who rant like that?? Ignore them. Answer the posts that lead to intelligent discussion, ignore the posts that are rants and whines. If (when) the subforum appears, fill it with new skill challenges, modifications to skill challenges, etc. Make it useful enough that the ranters are drowned out by the sheer volume of useful info in the forum. |
| #21ChimericPhaseJul 11, 2009 2:07:56 | I'll put the request in. That would be greatly appreciated! |
| #22hotheadJul 11, 2009 2:16:15 | I'll put the request in. Thanks! |
| #23Matt_JamesJul 13, 2009 0:43:05 | Excellent news. Let me know if you need any assistance in keeping things roped in ![]() |
| #24ChimericPhaseJul 14, 2009 16:17:00 | Look how many Skill threads I found! I didn't even have to go way back to find them... Show http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1215304 - 4E Skills = 3.5 Noncombat Class Abilities http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1216734 - Skill Challenges: 2d10 % roll > d20 roll ? http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1214788 - Question on handling Skill Challenges. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1214110 - Question about skills in 4e http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1213672 - question about skills http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1213041 - Skill Challange http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1216358 - can you auto fail a skill check? http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1216551 - Insight: The All Powerful Skill http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1215143 - Perception questions http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1211698 - Using Skills Creatively http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1216595 - The Twist on Turns in Skill Challenges http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1213240 - Skill: Appraise? |
| #25wrecanJul 14, 2009 16:21:41 | Also, funny thing I noticed. Every so often some one goes through General Discussion and cleans house and most of the threads get moved. That's me. On the other hand, I rarely see threads moved out of WaDMtD? and WaPtD?...even the threads about traps, magic items, rules questions, classes... Yeah, we're pretty lenient about what goes into those forums since the problems of DMs and Players touch on so many topics. In Skills and Skill Challenges sub-forum, I think. I agree. Sadly, it takes forever and a half to have the forums configurations changed. |
| #26bone_nagaJul 14, 2009 16:35:47 | I agree, this has my vote! |
| #27princemerciaJul 14, 2009 20:07:52 | This has my vote also |
| #28fdlJul 17, 2009 12:53:06 | I agree, yes. Skill challenges are a vital addition to the game, and as such people need support for building and running them. |
| #29xxphilosopherxxJul 18, 2009 14:59:23 | You have my vote too. And to the Poisonmaking challenge thoughts, I would like to suggest use of the Nature Skill in the challenge, for other sources of the base for the poisons(Hydra or Dragon), it could be one of the other skills(Arcana, Dungeoneering, or Religion - based on the source). I agree with you there. It's definitly a must to know the creature you're harvesting from. I think Perception and Heal would also tend to be useful for this kind of thing. Anyway, this is getting off-topic and i have an on-topic thought to share! Quests! These are equally useful non-combat construct that i think could be easily and wonderfully grouped with skills/skill challenges. They do not currently appear to have their own place either and are somewhat similar thematically. If there is to be a new sub-forum, i propose that it also make room for quests. ![]() |
| #30Seeker95Jul 18, 2009 15:11:43 | Hear hear! (Or is it "here here"?) Proposed: That a new 4e (sub-)forum be created entitled: Skills, Skill Challenges, and Quests |
| #31ChimericPhaseJul 18, 2009 15:16:44 |
Huzzah! Thats a great title, I hadn't thought of quests. |
| #32misterfido_dupJul 18, 2009 15:59:40 | Hear hear! (Or is it "here here"?) Hear-hear =P Derived from 'hear ye, hear ye' and 'hear him, hear him!' from British Parliament. Also, yes on skill challenge forums. |
| #33rjjrJul 18, 2009 21:57:02 | What a simple, brilliant, justified idea. What would be a reason not to have a skill challenges and quests subforum? |
| #34NorskDrakeJul 19, 2009 5:14:10 | It's be so useful to have a place to go to for what in my opinion is one of the areas most needing of help. Here is my vote for the creation of the thread named above. |
| #35DareusJul 19, 2009 10:07:11 | |
| #36mrbloomeJul 20, 2009 18:11:38 | I agree that this is needed. |
| #37pskoughtJul 21, 2009 14:21:38 | Another Aye, Yay, Pro, For or On any given day, I generally cruise Traps forum, the What's a DM to Do forum and the Workshop forum looking for Skill Challenge help/ideas. A one-stop-shop would be brilliant. |
| #38ChimericPhaseJul 21, 2009 18:52:24 | It's be so useful to have a place to go to for what in my opinion is one of the areas most needing of help. I agree that Skill Challenges need more help. I ran my first one last Sunday and I'm still not really sure if I ran it correctly. I'd love to see more articles/podcasts from WotC about skill challenges. Enough monster/race/class love - skills are feeling like the neglected stepchild here! What if WotC released one or two skill challenge related articles on Dragon/Dungeon at the same time they implemented a new subforum! It would simultaneously catch the attention of D&Di and non-D&Di subscribers. It would be that first breath of life for the subforum and a major step for affirming skill challenges role in 4th edition. Edit: omg there's a lot of Skill Challenge threads in WaDMtD today! |
| #39esperifielJul 22, 2009 5:41:34 | There's already a place for skill challenges. It's the DM forum. Combat encounters are different in 4E. They don't need their own forum. The DM forum is already there. If anything, combat encounters are used more often than skill challenges, and they'd need one before skill challenges. |
| #40drnickJul 22, 2009 11:16:40 | If anything, combat encounters are used more often than skill challenges, and they'd need one before skill challenges. FYI, Combat has a subforum. http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=933 |
| #41ChimericPhaseJul 22, 2009 21:03:43 | There's already a place for skill challenges. It's the DM forum. Yes, we are all aware that skill challenges generally go in the DM sub-forum... for now. The DM subforum is very generalized and not conductive to shedding light on a specific mechanic. Traps are a specific mechanic that would be a topic for the DM subforum - and yet there is a subforum for Traps. If Traps, Terrains and Tactics is a valid enough topic to have their own subforum, I don't see why Skills, Skill Challenges, Quests, and other Non-Combat issues couldn't have their own sub-forum. Clearly there are a lot of questions about skills and Skill Challenges - judging by their prevalence on the forums. I think this is both the time and the place to ask for a subforum devoted to these topics. |
| #42wrecanJul 23, 2009 7:27:19 | If Traps, Terrains and Tactics is a valid enough topic to have their own subforum, I don't see why Skills, Skill Challenges, Quests, and other Non-Combat issues couldn't have their own sub-forum. Actually, I don't think Combat:TTT should be a forum. It has little traffic. The truth is I suggested the Combat:TTT forum only as a counterpoint to the Skill Challenge forum I proposed more than a year ago. For some reason, the Combat:TTT forum was approved and the Skill Challenge forum was not. (The guy who made that decision, btw, is no longer at Wizards.) I agree a Skill Challenge forum should be implemented, though. I just wish I had the power to make it happen. |
| #43felldrawJul 23, 2009 15:32:17 | I'm for it. I mean it can't really hurt anyway whether you want it or not! |
| #44ChimericPhaseJul 23, 2009 21:48:07 | Actually, I don't think Combat:TTT should be a forum. It has little traffic. The truth is I suggested the Combat:TTT forum only as a counterpoint to the Skill Challenge forum I proposed more than a year ago. For some reason, the Combat:TTT forum was approved and the Skill Challenge forum was not. (The guy who made that decision, btw, is no longer at Wizards.) I remember when I first saw the Combat subforum I thought it was really odd that it was followed with a colon and then listed Traps, Terrain and Tactics. It was like a "One of these things is not like the other..." moments. I understand what it's trying to say, but Traps is out of place on that list. Chapter 5 of the DMG is NONCOMBAT ENCOUNTERS. The items beneath that: Skill Challenges, Puzzles, Traps and Hazzards. If we can't have a NEW subforum, maybe renaming a current subforum would be easier? |
| #45ChimericPhaseAug 06, 2009 21:02:50 | One of my wishes got granted and this month's Dragon Editorial has a nice little chat about roleplaying and non-combat encounters: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dred/2009August |
| #46The_JesterAug 28, 2009 21:58:28 | I like that they give the entire formums a facelift and still forget about this request. Oh WotC... |
| #47ChimericPhaseAug 29, 2009 2:32:06 | I know. I am still sad |
| #48bone_nagaAug 30, 2009 13:31:10 | Indeed. One would think that giving the forums a new facelift would be the perfect time to implement this request as well. Of course, one would also think that a little more attention would have been spent to certain aspects of the new forums, and now their time will (hopefully) be spent fixing those issues, which unfortunately means they probably won't get around to this for a little while (if ever). |
