Over the past while, discussions have been raised in several areas regarding the set of smilies available on the boards. Requests have been made for several additions to the available smilies, several removals of disruptive and/or redundant smilies, and some alterations of the existing smilies.

Each existing proposal is outlined here; this thread is intended to allow users from all areas to comment on each proposed change. All feedback from this thread, and the other threads like it in the other areas of the boards, will be taken into account when deciding whether to implement each proposal. If you would like to make any additional proposals, please do so.

The existing proposals are as follows:
 • Remove the :invasion:, :pile:, :bounce:, :hoppingma, :headexplo, and :OMG! smilies, on the basis that their size is disruptive and that they do not serve any useful purpose that cannot be filled by other, less disruptive smilies.

 • Remove the following other smilies: , , , :angelhide, , , :rolleye2:, , , , , :88E:, --on the basis that they are (variously) redundant, rarely used, ugly, and/or useless.

 • Add the numeric Magic mana symbols to the smilie list as :1:, :2:, etc.

 • Add the D&D 4E notation symbols (Melee, Ranged, Area, etc.) to the smilie list.

 • Add IMAGE(http://wut.ca/images/smilies/v.gif), IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/dangit.gif), IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/QuestionLook.gif), and IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/Fixed.gif) to the smilie list.

 • Alter the existing smilies when appropriate so they're matched in color rather than all different colors.

 • Replace with IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/shiftyeyes4.gif)

(Proposals were also made for several area-specific smilies (such as :fett to be removed, but those are not included because they didn't originate in the area the smilies were intended to service.)

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns about these proposals, or have additional requests, please post them here. (Even if you don't care about the changes, saying so is helpful.)

I'm not really bothered by this, tbh. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing something similar to the Winky-smiley from the Penny Arcade forums here, because I find it ever so useful.

I'm not terribly fussed by Smilies unless they are huge (as in taller than the text), have obnoxious animations or are funky colours.

"Add the D&D 4E notation symbols (Melee, Ranged, Area, etc.) to the smilie list."
SA-WHEAT! There are a lot of those.

I like those proposed changes. A lot. Except the "Fixed" one because it's too tall.

Aww, I like Even if it is, yeah, slightly redundant. I don't like the 'fixed' one because it's too tall.

This forum needs the IMAGE(http://www.iankunx.net/icon_wacko.gif) and IMAGE(http://www.iankunx.net/icon_disapprove.gif) smilies. :P

This is a repost of what I posted over in the General Gaming Community Business forum:

*

The existing proposals are as follows:
 • Remove the :invasion:, :pile:, :bounce:, :hoppingma, :headexplo, and :OMG! smilies, on the basis that their size is disruptive and that they do not serve any useful purpose that cannot be filled by other, less disruptive smilies.

 • Remove the following other smilies: , , , :angelhide, , , :rolleye2:, , , , , :88E:, --on the basis that they are (variously) redundant, rarely used, ugly, and/or useless.

I use several of these frequently. I would not like to see any of them removed.

 • Add the numeric Magic mana symbols to the smilie list as :1:, :2:, etc.

 • Add the D&D 4E notation symbols (Melee, Ranged, Area, etc.) to the smilie list.

Sounds like a swell idea.

 • Add IMAGE(http://wut.ca/images/smilies/v.gif), IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/dangit.gif), IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/QuestionLook.gif), and IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/Fixed.gif) to the smilie list.

No problems, though I don't know what purpose the first three would serve that isn't already served by an existing smiley.

 • Alter the existing smilies when appropriate so they're matched in color rather than all different colors.

I don't see any reason for this. Uniformity is not necessary.

 • Replace with IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/shiftyeyes4.gif)

Leave shifty alone!

I'm going to echo what I said in the MTG version of this thread. Because I can. :D

First of all, I'd recommend numbering those proposals, so things are easier to follow.

1)

2) :thumbsdow "keep them, just because." They aren't too disruptive, and are fun to use sometimes. I'm sure WotC's servers won't asplode from the extra bandwidth they take up.

3) I'm not convinced it's necessary, but I won't attempt to stop anyone. I do support the "synchronize and " argument, whatever that requires.

4) I'd also add some other functionality to that. More on that below.

5)

6)

7)

Overall, I support this change wholeheartedly.

I've seen people use the

About this:

Remove the :invasion:, :pile:, :bounce:, :hoppingma, :headexplo, and :OMG! smilies, on the basis that their size is disruptive and that they do not serve any useful purpose that cannot be filled by other, less disruptive smilies.

People post here to have some fun. Playing around with these can be a lot of fun.

Don't be a meanie and take these away.

Remove the :invasion:, :pile:, :bounce:, :hoppingma, :headexplo, and :OMG! smilies, on the basis that their size is disruptive and that they do not serve any useful purpose that cannot be filled by other, less disruptive smilies.

While this is a fine idea in its own right, it is beyond the scope of this thread. This thread is intended solely to discuss changes to the boards smilies; changes to the tags and boards code is another matter entirely.

I am all for adding new options for posters to use, but I do not think that any need to be removed. As previously stated by others, people are here to have fun; there is enough to do with moderating inappropriate comments. Don't moderate the smilies!

Remove the :invasion:, :pile:, :bounce:, :hoppingma, :headexplo, and :OMG! smilies, on the basis that their size is disruptive and that they do not serve any useful purpose that cannot be filled by other, less disruptive smilies.

I can agree that these are all somewhat disruptive except :headexplo. It's the smallest of that group and it's fairly useful. I'd add and to that list as well.

Remove the following other smilies: , , , :angelhide, , , :rolleye2:, , , , , :88E:, on the basis that they are (variously) redundant, rarely used, ugly, and/or useless.

I'd argue that a few of these don't belong on the list:
The generic devil smiley? Really Zammm? I think the need for this one speaks for itself.
This one is used most when posters are acknowledging praise, correct? Do we have another smiley that fills this purpose?
I can't be sure about the frequency of use, but I've seen it used from time to time during discussion of dead characters.
:88E: You know better Zammm, C'thulhu fhtagn. Although if you wanted to replace this one with a similar smiley that wasn't neon green I'd approve.

All other suggestions seem excellent.

Just as a note, I don't necessarily support any given one of these proposals--in fact, I'd like to keep a number of the smilies nominated for removal here.

I'm just passing on the requests made by others (okay, and a couple personal ones) here, without regard for my own preferences--it's always possible not everyone feels the same way I do, after all.

UPDATE!

I've talked with WotC and they're very much open to adding new smilies to the list. While they warned there would probably be a significant delay in getting them up (the word "months" was used), they'd still like to hear our requests.

So, with that in mind, I'm going to be opening up this thread (and the others in the other Metaboards) for smilie requests. If you have a smilie you'd like to see added to the boards, post it here and it will be considered. After a week or so I'll be closing requests and opening up a new series of threads asking for feedback on the submissions; the best submissions will be sent on to WotC to add to the available smilies on the boards.

So...what smilies would you like to see here?*

*I reserve the right to reject submissions for any reason. "Any reason" will probably mean violence, gore, and/or other content not strictly G-rated, but other reasons may exist. I also reserve the right to edit or remake submissions to fit in with our existing smilie set.

I also heartily agree with losing these: :invasion:, :pile:, :bounce:, :hoppingma smilies, since they usually just show up and annoy me.

I agree that , , and look horrible. If we can get rid of them, good.

I do like these two: IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/QuestionLook.gif), and IMAGE(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zammm/Smilies/Fixed.gif) and would like to see them added to the smilie list.

I'd argue against removing the smilies proposed for deletion. The people I'm playing with in the Play By Post Haven use most of them regularly for emphasis in the game threads we're playing. About the only one which isn't at least a semi-regular for us is Invasion, and even that's come up occasionally.

I'd second (or is it third, fourth, or fifth?) the need for an anime sweatdrop addition too.
