Stupid forum question: An "ignore" function, or a killfile-equivalent?

I've seen references to people adding someone to an "ignore list".

Is that actually something that can be done in the forum software, so you won't see someone's posts or be notified of their messages or replies? or is it just people using a shorthand for "note to self, never talk to that dude again"?

It is an actual function of the forum software. It prevents you from seeing posts by that given person. You can see that they posted I believe, but not what they posted. If someone else quotes them, you can still see it, likewise if you quote them

Click on the person's avatar, this will bring you to their profile page, where you can then click on "Block member."

No problem. An effective filter (be it software-based or wetware-based) is a key tool in staying sane on any internet forum.

It's just that the body of the post's text is replaced by "this was posted by a user on your block list. you can manage your block list here."

Not at all as effective as I would like.

This is my view as well.

I miss the old days when a simple -k kept a specific poster, subject line keyword, or even message body content post from even appearing in your list of things to read. *sigh*

I'm used to that. Usenet Killfiles worked that way, and the solution was a mass plonking of people who didn't realise that not feeding the trolls was the way.

The WotC forums are a low-traffic land of carebears and magical ponies in comparison, seriously.

(Although we did implement killfiling on "spoor" for a few posters - if they had posted anywhere in a thread, the entire thread got nuked - in tin. I remember doing that. I'm old.)
