Technical problem?

Every time I click on a link to get to the community, I keep getting the same message:

A technical error has occured. Please close your browser and try again.

After that, I go to my account, click on the community link, and everything's fine.  What's this all about?

Once you are in the community, do you get any errors at all?

I'm having the same issue. I get no errors once I'm in,  but sometimes it takes so long for the pages to load that I get bored and move on with my life. I'm talking 5 minutes or more. Nothing wrong on my end, we've checked (and believe me, my husband knows his way around computers and networks!)

OK, what is the link that your bookmark points to??

I'm getting the same errors, but if I log in to the main D&D homepage and go to the community from there, the errors stop until I open a new browser.

I have bookmarks to the Community homepage, the Forums central page, my online game's Group, and the wiki's list of published Adventures. Exact bookmarked urls provided in the links.

They all give me the technical error if I try to go to them before accessing the community from the main site, but they work fine afterward.

This must have just started about two days ago for me, I guess.

I too get the error when I bookmark straight in.

http(colon-slash-slash)community.wizards(dotcom)/go/forum/viewcategory/75882/Dungeons_38_Dragons

Once I am in, I can use this bookmark successfully.

I guess it would be helpful to mention I'm on Firefox 3.5.5

EDIT: It might also be helpful to mention that the problem seems to be gone now, so I just closed my window and opened a new one to test it.

I'm on IE7, and for now the problem seems to have gone away, but I've seen this happen before where it looks like it's fixed itself only to pop up again. I even checked my firewalls and other security settings. All is okay on my end.

I've been having the same problem, but haven't bothered to report it.

On same problem, I can go strait from the main site to this this forum with a direct link without the error.
That leaves me to believe that it is the board failing to recognize me when I first show up.

It's happening here too. Has been since last Thursday. I use Firefox 3.5.5 if that's relevant.

Every page on the forums (but not the rest of WotC's site) also makes Firefox 'hang up' for a few seconds before loading it as well. That might be a separate issue, but it's odd that it started at the same time.

No Firefox here. But since a few days ago I have an awful time getting in here.

I tried heading to Wizards' homepage or the Insider page first. I can get there easily every time. But the links to the forums are still broken most of the time.

I tried every fews hours all day long today. Finally got in here at 10:00 pm.

What's up? This is a completely new problem.

Heh, I was just coming to finally report this myself.  Looks like we all got fed up at once.

Any time I try to follow a link directly into the forums, with the latest Firefox or IE, I get the message.  I have to go to the homepage first, and then I can use a bookmark to the forums.  I guess it's a cookie thing?  Good job, you actually found something more obstructive than having to check in with the gal who's checking the dragon's prostate every time I log in.  Still, at least it isn't forgetting me every five minutes and sending me back there when I try to post, so it's a kind of progress.

Problem has returned. It was good for about three links then squat. I had to come in through the main website, the loading of every page off of there took forever, and I had to stop and reload my browser several times before it finally let me through.

For the record, checking for and installing updates on my DDI stuff was okay.

I, by the way, have used IE and the Opera browser on my Blackberry.  I have also clicked on links in my emails, and directly typed in the addres to my profile page.

Same result all around.  Obviously, I'm able to get in eventually, but the process of getting to my original destination has become a touch annoying.

Same problem here.  Using FF also.  I have to log in to Insider, and then navigate to community, and then to forums.  It obviates the effciency of a bookmark.  Undecided

Did you try the following:

I received an error saying that I needed to close my browser and try again. Instead, I chose the "my account" option. Then, I chose the "community" option.

That sent me to the site. Then I can come and go without problem until I close my browser and have to repeat. I use IE.

I've been having a problem recently with forum pages taking forever to load.  When I click on a forum link, "Waiting for ...." appears on the left of the taskbar.  It's taking such a long time to load, I back out and haven't been visiting much lately because of this.

I've seen the slow load issue too. Sometimes when I manually stop the still-blank page, the whole thing just appears. It's behaving like it can't connect to a separate server to the main forum, so it won't display anything until either it can or the connection is stopped so it doesn't have to keep trying.

I have found that sometimes double tapping the link instead of single tapping speeds the process. it seems to be waiting for a second tap on the link. So, if it doesn't change immediately I hit the link a second time. If I wait too long, it doesn't work though.

This is the method (and browser) I've been using.  Works fine.  Just takes a bit longer to get in.

Lately I've been experiencing 'Page cannot be displayed' errors.  A simple refresh fixes the issue, but it's odd that that old forum problem is here occasionally.  I've also experienced the slow load, but not terribly often and I have been able to get around it when it does pop up by stopping and clicking again.

This may provide some small insight to the problem. I kept the e-mails that were giving me problems. During a time, such as now, when the links are working fine, the previously defective e-mails also work fine.

One other detail that I noticed: Before it goes to the error page, on the title bar way up at the top of the whole screen, the title bar (where right now it reads "The Wizards Community > Post Reply - Technical problem? - Windows Internet Explorer") I watched it as it tried to load the thread, and it briefly did try to load the page, but then shot me to the error screen. It's very inconsistent when this happens. It's not one given time of the day, otherwise I'd assume there was some kind of server overload. Argh! Get those Tinker gnomes out of the server room!

(PS, thanks for the single-spacing when I hit return...)

I haven't been having trouble with load times (with the exception of a few minutes yesterday, but that might not have been WotC's site), but the last couple of weeks have seen the login problem when visiting WotC in a new browser session - I always arrive at the site as logged out even though I was logged in when I left (with 'remember me' checked), and if I go directly to the forums I sometimes see the 'an error has occurred' message.

This was not a problem beforehand - it's only in the last couple of weeks, as everyone else has started having problems, that the site doesn't seem to want to 'remember me' anymore.

I did go through the usual browser suspects. 'Stale cookies' was my thought the first time it happened, but no amount of fussing around with browser settings has helped.

Do you have a bookmark directly to a specific page in the forums? That is the common element to those having problems.

Same prob with multiple machines, operating systems, and browsers.

It seems to be something with the cookies.  If I log out, then when I return it doesn't happen.

Any clue on when this is getting fixed?

Thanks.  I found that a quick double click works better for the page load problem.

To be fair, I've had this double click problem on a few other sites. I don't think that one is a WoTC problem (though as not all sites have the problem, it is likely something they can/should fix.

As for the log in problem, It's happened before, so I'm really quite confused why it's taking them so long to fix. But like others, my bookmark links directly to the forums, when I first click it after opening firefox, I get the error screen and am logged out. I then click log in (it logs me in immediately, no asking for password) and then I redo my bookmark and it's all fine. As I've said, this has happened already, so not sure why they are taking so long to fix.

I'm not having the dreaded "technical problem" anymore.  As of right now, I'm not having any issues going directly to a page through a link.  I'm using IE.

Perhaps the issue has been resolved?  Smile

Still screwed up, and not even a nod from WotC. Maybe there's a more stable forum site we could meet at? I mean, we're not  obligated to come to these forums. They just happen to be convenient. But if they're not working, maybe we should vote with our keyboards.

Okay, whatever they did, it's working now. The question is "For how long?" I hold my breath waiting for the next error message...

I've turned it into a bit of a game. If I get a working link, I treat myself to a piece of candy or some such small snack.

I also notice we're back to the double-spacing. Connection, perhaps?

Shiftkitty, the timing of your replies leads me to opine:
The difficulty in accessing the Boards via a link varies based on whether the server has timed you out and is relying on your browser to autoload login and password. If you haven't yet been timed out of their server after leaving and returning, you're still good.

But it's happening to so many people. I log in at about 6:45 AM, log out at about 7:15 AM. Log back in at 12PM, log out at 1PM. Log in at about 7:00PM, then out about 7:30. (At least when it's working!) Being a creature of habit, that's pretty much how I've always done it. Although I know some of those times are peak times, it's not consistent at all as to when it will or won't work.
