| #1batshidoDec 05, 2008 20:41:45 | I know there's some turnover going on right now and things have, in all honesty, gotten a lot better around here as far as the troll-to-legitimate poster ratio, but it's pretty clear that there are still a few bad seeds that need removed before they sprout another edition war. With the injunction in place against edition warring and such, it seems like we should be working to clear out the people who are obviously just here to pick fights, right? It's fairly clear to anyone who frequents GD who the posters are who delight in this sort of sniping. This is just an open request to the powers that be to finally remove the last remnants of that school of poster. Thanks for your time. |
| #2umbralknightDec 06, 2008 14:11:04 | Having seen where you first brought this up, I have a comment to raise. Things like this... Not on this forums, no no!! ...don't help anyone. Another moderation-bash trend with lots of exlamation marks and agressive mouth-foaming is not what the forum needs. Don't take this as a comment against what you are asking for, Bat. I wish you luck. You won't catch me in GD, but I hope things there get better. In short what I am saying is (to the general public here); The mods are people too. Please remember this. No need for a repeat of the Enough is Enough saga. |
| #3vaalingrade_ashland_02Dec 07, 2008 22:28:16 | Bats, I agree with you. But the popular definition for insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. It's not going to happen, man. Thankfully, we're almost back down to pre-2007 levels of trolling and the lucky thing is that the trolls from before are gone, having been drowned out by edition war trolls. Thankfully, boardom and escalation of agression should clear all but the career trolls as they do the traditional blaze of glory via horrible pictures by January. Then we can get back to seeing our usual unchecked trolling: Gender stat threads, katanakatanakatana, what's left of alignment... |
| #4doomboy_dupDec 07, 2008 22:30:37 | What the heck is katanakakawhatever? |
| #5royalblueeyesDec 07, 2008 22:46:17 | What the heck is katanakakawhatever? It's the self-righteous assumption that anyone who even mentions the word "katana" obviously believes that the Japanese sword has mystical properties that ultimately make it better than an European sword. Or, just to be fair. It is someone who does in fact believe that. But, ultimately, in 4E, the Katana probably won't have any more of a difference from a Bastard Sword than that of the Broad Sword and the Long Sword. To add a good opinion into this topic: Tired of Flamers, Trolls, and whatnot? Make good use of the Ignore button. No need to make the moderators play God and judge the value of everything everyone says just because you're lazy and ******. Also, on the topic of things such as Trolls, Katana-threads, and the like; everyone views that what they have to say has some legitimacy. If you disagree with it, then ignore it. "I think the katana should be the best damn thing DnD has ever seen, because I am...ect...ect...ect! You all who disagree are ![]() ![]() ![]() -heads!"![]() Go ahead. Push the ignore button. It doesn't bite. And anyone on these boards who actually vehemently chose one edition over the other is in fact depending on the game way too much, and should probably seek psychological care, unless they are menstruating boys who finally hit puberty and have no idea why they're ******, but know that they are and that something has to die. We just have to suck it up and deal with it. |
| #6vaalingrade_ashland_02Dec 07, 2008 23:52:37 | What the heck is katanakakawhatever? The equipment board traditionally has a lot of people who are sure they know the 'correct' 'historical' (note the quotation marks) statistics for DnD's weapons. questions about weapons stats are instant fire and katanas are usually the tinder. Often on purpose. |
| #7thecasualoblivionDec 08, 2008 0:19:13 | With the injunction in place against edition warring and such, it seems like we should be working to clear out the people who are obviously just here to pick fights, right? Injunction in place against edition warring? When did this happen. I haven't really been around regularly, but a cursory glance has not shown me the source of this. Can anyone explain this to me? |
| #8Mr_MiscellanyDec 08, 2008 0:54:18 | I play both 3E and 4E pretty regularly, so I'm convinced the rest of you one edition only types all suck. (I kid, I kid). Seriously though, having been here in one form or another for as long or longer than the rest of you, all I can say is: Use the Ignore feature and convince others to do the same. If these people are as obvious as Bats says they are, it shouldn't be that hard for the community to rise up, ignore them and convince any new people taken unawares by one of these trolls to do the same. In real life it’s a whole lot easier to shoo someone away who causes problems. Lots of ways to do it too. But we don’t have those options available to us here. Simply ignoring someone is really the only form of social-based means we have left on this type of forum to stop others from pulling their crap. Ostracize them and they might not go away. But they sure as hell won’t be an issue any longer. With all due respect to Bats, asking the mods to take these people out won’t work. |
| #9pudgeheapDec 08, 2008 1:30:35 | Problem is, around here, simple disagreement seems to indicate "trolling", especially if the disagreeing opinion is negative of 4e... I know, it's just ridiculous. Some people just want an echo chamber in my opinion. However, I have faith in the fact that the mods are the ones who decide the fate of the community members and not the people with radical views out there. |
| #10calronmoonflowerDec 08, 2008 2:29:05 | Thankfully the amount of disruption that is been going on have decreased allot. It did surge up again a short while back and was the gain that tipped the scale to me writing my guide for dealing with those posters. The response time to reports has improved as well, or at least to mine. As it has been brought up, I'd like to point out that their is a difference between disagreement and the disruption that the "usual suspects" cause. Many of the disruptive posters have had multiple moderations for the same activity and a few have had multiple permanent bans. The poster that managed the only IP ban sense the reorganization of customer service was in this category. Disruption (by any side) prevents the free exchange of ideas. usually this is done by personal attacks, baiting, and derailment of threads. Injunction in place against edition warring? When did this happen. I haven't really been around regularly, but a cursory glance has not shown me the source of this. Can anyone explain this to me? Look at some of the locked threads in the 4th General Board. Near the end Webster might pop up and say that the thread is going to be locked for an edition war. Of course the defintion might be useful here. I never got an official defintion when I asked but is generally a comparison between 4th and 3rd. Criticizing 4th is still allowed. |
| #11greatfritoDec 08, 2008 2:38:09 | Er, Bats (and others), do we really need another thread on this? We've had several in the past, and they almost always end up the same way - frustration, simply due to the more questionable posters being drawn in (it is almost a "call out" to them), and the more legitimate posters being unable to do anything. That said, I think things have gotten better, and most of the people who remain on GD are discussing, rather than baiting/trolling (most, not all). The reactionary elements remaining on GD are more prone to "Edition War"-ing at this point (from what I've seen) than the known "problem posters." The few that are left and active are easily ignored at this point. I'm all for some hard and meaningful justice being meted out by the moderators, if and when people violate the CoC, but I think things may be about as good as one could expect at this point. EDIT: I should add, for known problematic posters, I still have my handy-dandy pre-formatted Report sheet, including known details of the poster's history, to aid the Moderators. I've actually had some pretty good success with that (most posts I've reported have been dealt with, unless it was such a borderline situation that I didn't really expect the Mod to be able to do more than post the little "play nice, children," message). |
| #12pudgeheapDec 08, 2008 6:03:30 | Er, Bats (and others), do we really need another thread on this? I gotta agree, the last 4 of these kinds of threads always attracted people of the wrong sort who were disruptive and got the thread locked. I think requests like this are better done by contacting the community management and talking to them about it. Appealing in the court of public opinion is like indirectly flaming WotC in my opinion. |
