Here are my suggestions - which are entirely self-serving, since I founded those wikis ;) :
- Use the DDI Monster Builder, and submit a few more monsters to the DDI Wiki (or characters built with the Character Builder, for that matter...)! We have 36 monsters up so far, but we can always use more...
- Write some stuff for the Arcana Wiki! The Arcana Wiki, in case you haven't heard of it, is intended as a sort of "Wikipedia written by gamers, for gamers". That is to say, each entry takes totally innocent real world facts and concepts, and then twists and mutilates those facts until they result in game and adventure ideas. We are rapidly approaching 2,000 entries, but there is so much stuff to cover out there that we can always use more contributors...
These projects have the added advantage of being communal sites, just like the D&D forums here - and indeed, they have their own forums as well.
So, what are your suggestions for what to do during downtime?

I've set it so that people can mess with it if they want. Don't worry, I have a few copies saved on my hdd and on the website should someone mess things up too badly.
I just figured out how to add 'dice' to the grid, but can't figure out how to roll them individually. Right now, f9 'rolls' all of the dice at the same time. I was going to add a few variables to it so that players can add their stat modifiers, but realized that would become too time consuming on the player's end. I have to credit Red Tide MUX for the source of this idea, though I know other people have used edigrid before.
Anyway. I chose this instead of a program like maptools or the battlemat thingy that some people use because there are still people out there that use archaic computing machines that can't keep up with the graphically intensive stuff that people put out these days. Feel free to mess with the stuff, click and drag the little icons around, and.. Most importantly, pitch ideas to me for things that you might like to add!

Arcana wiki sounds interesting; I'll have to check that out. I twist and mutilate real world events for adventure ideas all the time; I'd love contribute a few ideas in my spare time.
As for what I'm gonna do during the forum downtime here, I dunno. These boards have long been my way to totally unwind for an hour or so after work (better than a beer and a cig ;)). I actually enjoy the endless chatter about my favorite hobby, D&D.
I almost never visit other D&D boards but this week I might stray a bit. I have an active account with EN World, but I'll prolly end up lurking most of the time. I also like Dragonfoot but rarely have time to visit both forums (so I stick with these boards).
So, that's what I'll prolly be doing in the downtime; same ol', same ol', just different playground ;).
I should really be doing at least one of those now...

Naw, what am I saying that would be work. I'll probably just do my college homework and go to work. maybe watch a few more movies. (you know since I can't really play D&D or anything cause of the GT).
Since I'm still in the process of converting Ruins of Undermountain, Night Below, and Dragon Mountain to 4E, I have oodles to do. I also DM for 4 different D&D 4E groups at my FLGS and one home group, so my time is well spoken for.

People have said the same thing to me before ;) and I have to agree to some extent. For a hobby, D&D does take up a disporportionately large part of my free time.
Even after twenty-five years, the game remains at the forefront of my imagination. With all that's out there to capture a man's attention, I'm stuck on a game of make-believe. I spend a large part of my free time staring at the clouds (so to speak).
Could be worse, I could have no imagination at all ;). Your post made me think about priorities, zackblack; think I'm okay ;).
It's fun to rub shoulders with game designers and novel authors, even if online.

Actually, I own 2 businesses, am a husband and father of 2, and am on the city council where I live. Between those priorities and D&D, I have zero time for anything else. However, should I find my time with my family being cut short, D&D is the first thing to go. While it is something I enjoy thoroughly (and have enjoyed since the early '80s), it is not my priority. If it turns out that I need to drop some of my FLGS groups, then so be it. For me, it is one of the most enjoyable hobbies I've ever had, but it still remains no more than just a hobby.
