Although I still do not like the new forums set-up (don't like the looks, the feel, and things aren't very conveniently located), I do like the look of the new website. I'll mess with it more to see if eveything I use is nice and handy, but so far so good!

I like the look of it, but from the complaints on other threads it is another step down for usability. Trading usability for beauty is not a good thing. (that's what my last girlfriend said when she broke up with me anyway).

Familiarity =/= Usablilty

After browsing a bit I think the layout is better then before especially with the DM and player separation.  I have found the site better laid out then the previous site.

about 80% of my (wide) screen is empty. the layout has gone from early nineties to early next century. but it still is not 2009. it still feels like a look back in the past.

reasoning:
- to many images as placeholders for links, and non-variable image layout
- fixed size layout
- to much information cramped into one page (you can go through 130 different links on one page)
- intransparent grouping of items on their page
- banners take away about 600 pixels from the top of the page, which means with modern screens that usually run around 1850x1050, you'll have about 200-300 pixels left after toolbars, statusbars, and taskbar.

If i full screened my applications I would probably agree with you.  But I dont, my screens take up about half of what they would and im fine with it.  Actually its a complaint I have about adventure tools because it always starts up full screened rather then where i put it.

On the other hand, it displays really well on my small screen netbook, so I'm thankful for the way it is laid out.

The problem is if they used % values in their width and height variables, it would fit fine on everyone's browsers. The problem was identified in the forums and has yet to be fixed. Then they went ahead and did it to the WotC D&D main page. It really shows how much they listen to us doesn't it.

well, at least that is a wrong assumption. they'd be working on the webpage for sure longer than they put up the page, and for the complaints to reach their designers. so basically, they have made the same mistakes in the web UI sections over and over, on both parts.

nowadays, you can hardly buy a monitor that is NOT widescreen, as it's easier to produce for the companies who make the panels (because it is produced on the same sites that make TVs - usually 16:9) in that format. however, wotc uses nothing of that, did not even think of that.

just have a look: that's a screenshot of how the forum looks on my screen if i disable my stylish plugin:

do i have a large resolution? yes. should a proper webpage render like that? no.

Oops forgot my [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags. I completely agree with you though!

Just sayin'...

Do you know how many netbooks are being sold? Netbooks have really really small screens ;)

just repeatin'...

you can build webpages for large and small resolutions at once. no need to force it on either, which is exactly what they were/are doing. it seems especially strange in the forums, where a width of 600 for the content REALLY isn't enough.
