What specifically is going to be ok for general discussion?

I noted that the wizo's moved Psionx's post on oots off to the off-topic board. What constitutes general discussion here? Can we get a set of guidelines? Unlike the rules Q&A which pretty much says what's supposed to be in that forum, what does general discussion entail?

Could we get an official answer on this? Please?

It would be a nice sticky for this forum to have some information on what is on-topic and what is off-topic, so maybe we can report things instead of flaming them.

Well, considering they didn't move the other OotS post, that could also be because of some of the content in psionx's thread. I couldn't say for sure, since I only saw the version in the off topic board.

I just think it's funny to ask specifically what goes in the general thread.

(Not to say it isn't a good question, just funny.)

I have asked, and while I haven't yet gotten a response, here are my thoughts on the topics.

Any topic that already has a dedicated forum should go there. That *includes* comparisons to 3.5 as far as I am concerned. Meta-discussions about the board, its operation and policies should go in the Community Business forum.

We've had a general forum for... wel... since the beginning and this question comes up now?

:P

The general board is the catch basin (more or less) for things that don't fit the other forums. OOTS isn't D&D- (That is, there's no WotC book on Order of the Stick.) it's a webcomic.

Whereas it's easy ot say threads about races go on the races board, there's no "general" topic that can be pointed to. If there's a better board for it, it should go on that board, not general.

We've tried to get rid of the forum in the past and I'm sure it will come up again in the future. It's not gone right now because there are still topics/threads that don't fit the established categories.

I could give some examples if you'd like, but as pointed out, D&D General has been around a long time and nobody's really questioned the purpose of it before. (Which, BTW is a question that should be asked on the community business board.)

I think what people are tiptoeing around right now is how appropriate is it to flame 4E on this forum.

Oh.. Well. I'd say that trolling is aginst the CoC and as such wouldn't be allowed on the board.

My two cents, anyway.

I'm not talking about people flaming other people as much as I'm talking about people flaming the game itself. Unless that is also trolling?

Heck, hasn't then been done enough? We've had almost a full year of that.

I personally think it's time to grow up and let go of it. Really. If you don't wanna play the new edition, then don't. You have the old forums. You have other fan sites. Go and play the game you love. Leave the people who want to play this game in peace.

If you have a negative constructive criticism, then it probably will be accepted with open arms. If all you want to do is complain, the time for that is over.

There really isn't a good enough definition for 'trolling' to say exactly where the line is. Even from one WizO to the next, the line wavers. And I'd bet a member's posting history plays somewhat in a WizOs decision making process.

Then again, in the past months it also seems they have an extremely high tolerance for 4ed Avengers flaming, trolling, baiting and belittling those who aren't all the way on board. Comparatively speaking, anyway.

No, not really. Nearly all criticism is met with extreme hostility. Which is especially puzzling when it's directed at people who self-proclaim to be on the fence (whether 50/50, leaning more away, or leaning more toward). You'd think the level of vehemence the 4ed Avengers expressed might actually serve to drive those still on the fence further away, specifically because of that culture. Yet it appears that it's a-ok by the WizOs to do just that.

Not really. "4e avengers" also have to obey the rules or also get warnings. I know; I've closed some pro-4e threads myself.

And "anti 4e" people didn't automatically get shut down. "4e sux!" screams trolling. "I don't want to buy another set of books" is a valid discussion for a concerns/criticism forum.

Of course they have to obey the rules. And who interprets those rules? People do. People just like you and I. It's only natural that their bias will show. It seems to me that the current crop will be more prone to really liking 4ed, especially with the WizO change that occured around the time of the 4ed announcement. I'd say it's only natural that they'd give more leeway to people that really love* 4ed, and less to people that really hate* 4ed.

*Though I have a hard time imagining how either one of these could happen. The amount of information given is really far too small to come to either extreme of that spectrum.

I wouldn't say it's "leeway" as much as how many people cross the line and violate the CoC.

People that are upset and angry will be more hostile. They tend to break the CoC more than someone who isn't upset and angry. That's where I think the "appearance" of "more tolerance" is coming in.

Can we talk abiout Yahtzee and laser beams here?
#18

Yahtzee goes here:
http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=840

Laser beams go here:
http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=853

Unless the context is for Star Wars games, then it goes in the SW board. For d20 modern/future discussion on laser beams it goes on those boards.

Its the borderline cases that don't quite cross the line that cause the biggest messes.

Irony = I have gotten in more "trouble" since I jokingly put Midwest Avenger in my Sig. If anything, the "avengers" are having their posts looked at and judged more harshly than many (not all) other posters.

If you want really to bring it here, I will ask if the bias is not TOWARD the other side...

look at how the... fiercer antis are often seemingly given a passe-droit.

My main reasoning for asking this is because of off-topic discussions. For example, the thread D&D is like x-men could easily be off topic. I am saying I would like specific guidelines as to what is posted in the general discussion for 4E D&D fundamentals. Because it seems to me that we aren't talking fundamentals here, we are just talking about complaints and concerns still.

Don't post stupid stuff. That should account for most of it. That pretty much includes:

Who is/is not making the switch.
Comparisons to MMOs.
Comparisons to previous editions.
Anything that can fall under a different forum.

I have asked Mike to move the CB forum under the current D&D HQ forum, with a link from the Previous Editions forum.

Have I mentioned lately ... how much I ... appreciate ... you?

In a strictly manly, utterly appropriate, ethically sincere and non-oogy way?? ;)

I really hope not. Nobody should consider you suspect just because you put a tag in your sig.

Even during the heat of the recent Edition Wars, I tried to treat the Avengers as a shared joke ... rather than a street gang.

After all, in my old job, I had to 'take out' the street gangs. ;) I'm far too old for that ... stuff ... now. :D
