What the hell is going on?

Ok, we're experiencing several new - and incredibly annoying issues. One, the time it takes text to appear on the screen after a keystroke is unacceptably long. Second, after using the Edit function to correct errors caused by the first issue, backspacing placed the cursor at the end of the post for some reason. And, finally (AFAIK), posts are being devoured. People post and it comes up blank. They are not able to edit any text in.

So what's the deal? It's not like we need more things that may make people fed up with this new nonsense.

Seconded. When the hell are we going to get a working community site?

If they're deliberately trying to drive people away from the site they couldn't do a better job short of just ipbanning everyone.

So now my current list of gripes is.

1 still have a horrible white forum background. It's ugly and an assault on the eyes. White only works when printed.

2. Still no sblocks.

3. The typing delay nonsense.

4. Editing shenanigans.

5. Mysterious Vanishing posts.

6. Lack of font color change.

7. Lack of Card feature.

8. Mysterious vanishing threads

9. Poorly functioning thread links.

10. Nearly unusable subforum lists.

11. We don't have a functioning Quote system anymore. Put it back to where it was before you blew chunks all over this site.

12. Double spaced by default spacing between lines.

Just wanted to add that the vanishing text seems to be associated with posts that contain quotes.

Something's wrong with the quote function, yes.  Past that, for me at least, everything seems to be working fine.

So the letters you type appear as you type them?  I haven't had a post all day that didn't experience some delay and/or funkiness in text appearance.  And I'm not alone.  It's interesting that you're not seing it.

I've had trouble editing my own posts (for spelling errors, and the like).

I can also confirm the "mysterious disappearing post" problem.  I observed someone replying to one of my threads with nothing but a full quote of my original post.  A moment later, the post vanished.  I can only assume this person intended to say something regarding the quoted material, then got forum-gimped.

Yep.  That'n seems to be the most common.  It's bad enough for me that I decided to pull out of an entertaining conversation I was part of.  My text takes so long to appear in the box (I'm frequently words ahead of what's on the screen), backspacing fails intermittantly and the quote system is borked to hell that I don't feel I can devote the proper attention to the conversation.  It's just too messed up to do that (for me) right now.  I'd like to hear some official something about what's up.

Make sure the Post is under the quote. Like this.

{/Quote]
Whatever you were going to post.

I now copy all my posts, and then preview it. Thats how I figured it out.

As you can see the first bracket is missing. Because the first part was "invisible" because of the "{/quote}" when I previewed this post like 3 times.

Now if only I could find away to post links and not have it "bleed" into my sig...

I just wanna hit the quote button and have it work, man.  Like it did even earlier today.  And I'd really, really like to see my text as I'm typing it and have backspace not automatically move the cursor to the end of the line.  Believe it or not, when you can't see what's hitting the screen, you may have to erase and replace more than one letter.

I've notified the higher ups about the quote issue earlier, and will report the rest of these as well.

At this point, its a matter of grab your back cheeks and hold on, cuz this is a bumpy ride.

Heh.  Very likely.  At least it's been reported to the people that can do something about it (thanks again, AL).  That's really all I can ask for - besides it getting fixed, you know. :P

@Cpt_Micha

Can you provide details about #3, 4, 7, and 9? And examples of # 5, 8, and 9?  The more you can provide, the better chance of getting some of these fixed. I'm holding off on sending a report until I get some details.

#1 is not an actual bug.  Just a lack of choice. Sorry to say it, but don't expect that to get fixed soon.

#2 has actualy been reported and should be fixed within a matter of weeks.

#6 works? Seems like it works.

Just had  a post vanish after quoting. Editing didn't work, so I deleted the post and made a new one.

Severely annoying.

#3 is kind of difficult. Basically the forum rolls a natural 1, and your words don't appear until (up to a minute) several moments later after you have typed them. You have no way of knowing if you screwed up the words.

#4 I've had posts, that I've tried to edit and the forum rolls a 1 and errors my post into either oblivion, or redirects me to an error page.

#5 I've had posts of mine disappear just after posting them numerous times. (never had this issue before the forum change)

#6 It wasn't working for me.. now it is... odd.

#7 You know the thing where you used to be able to make power cards on the forum? Or display Magic Cards? That..

#8 I can't recall a specific example presently, but I will show one if it happens again. It's not happened in a week or so though for me.

#9 I miss it when thread links would actually link someone to the relevant page that you intended on linking them to. Rather than the beginning of the thread.

#7 - No idea about that.  Never used it myself, and its almost certainly soemthing that we won't see anytime soon.  The coders behind this new forum setup probably won't make something specialized like that just for WotC. They use the same code for multiple community sites. Still, I'll send it up the chain.  Don't hold your breath though.

#9 - At the top-right corner of each post, you will see 3 buttons.  Multi-Quote, Quote, and Report Post.  Next to Report post, you will see a number.  (#18 for this post) That number is a link.  If you copy that link, you can use it to link someone directly to the place in the thread you want them to be. Does that help you?

Yeah, AL. #3 is my biggest problem.  I'll occasionally get four or five words ahead of what's appearing on the screen.  Coupled with the editing issue (backspace in the middle of a post once and it moves the cursor to the end of the text - so you have to click back where you want to type the new letter and then, after typing one, it moves back to the end), it makes posting a nightmare.

The last few posts I've made, though, have had no appreciable delay and allowed me to erase and replace text normally.  Maybe they've corrected the issue?

#3 - Are you sure the page has finished loading before you try to start typing?  Make sure you can see all of the edit buttons (bold, italics, images, text color, etc) before you start typing.  Does that correct the issue?

#21

Cpt_Micha

Nov 11, 2009 15:17:23

Nope. (I use a cable connection by the way so it ain't that) Everything's fully loaded when the typing issue happens. Except for the text apparently that gets typed out.

I'll try the numbers thing in a sec.

Okay that works when you do it that way.

Regarding #12, double spaced lines, are you aware that if you hold Shift while hitting the return/enter key, it will single space?

So you end up
with single spaced
text instead of
double spaced.

This is becoming a bit of an internet standard, especially with instant messaging programs.  I doubt you will see any change on this item.

Oh yes, all was loaded.  And still there was a delay.  Now, though, all seems well.  No delays, no goofiness with editing text.  All seems well for me, at least.

New bugs - Typing delay, quote problem, vanishing posts, cursor: These were likely introduced with a code update done yesterday; they have been reported.

White forums background: We did adjust this to a light gray, but I think it's still not enough contrast depending on your monitor/settings. Another update is scheduled as part of the big batch of forums work.

Upcoming work:
Some of the other issues are addressed in the forums work that has been scheduled for this year. We will be rolling out features in phases and will post specific release dates when they are available:

Sblock
Autocard
Other BBcode support
Navigation improvements, including to the subforum list
Fixing the default double-spacing

That leaves these two:

6. Lack of font color change: Are you changing the font color and it isn't displaying once you post?

9. Poorly functioning thread links: Can I get more details on this one?

Thanks!

Hi, Michelle.

#6 is a false alarm.  Color Changes are working fine.

#9 is taken care of as well.  The poster was unaware of how to find a link to a specific post in a thread.  I've given him instruction and all is well.

Also, it looks like quotes are working again! Nice!

Let me know if you are still seeing any of these problems (the new bugs). I verified that they were related to yesterday's code update, and should be fixed.

The good news - auto-double space on line breaks is GONE!!!!! Single spacing is the default now.

Ooh, nice. One problem with that, though, unfortunately--since things are no longer split into paragraphs, the indent (and de-indent) buttons are nearly useless. You have to manually create paragraphs before they start working.

Well that is an unfortunate consequence. And the menu doesn't give you a way to "unparagraph" something. Not sure how hard that will be to fix, but will check. I assume that you want me to leave the single-spacing, anyway? (I can switch it back..muwahahahahaha!!!!)

One other side-effect... Creating a New Thread does not include any of the fancy formatting buttons.  new Replies, and Editing existing messages still includes the formatting buttons.

Yeah, I noticed that lack of buttons when creating a new thread, too.  All the rest?  Totally resolved.  Thanks again to AL and WotC_Michelle!
