I would love to have a chat room on wizards that actually worked. Is there any reason the chat is non-existant here? I mean WOTC is no mom and pop company, it actually surprises me that this problem hasn't been rectified.

No clue... but, if I had to guess, I'd say they plan to allow chat with their VGT and are working on getting that up and running.

I am guessing here, so keep that in mind.

they had one i believe. However, I think the problem turned out that it required a lot of effort in the for of man-hours to keep it operational (WotC would probably be a very large attractor as opposed to small outfits so it would mean a high volume site, IMO.) and it was not a money maker.

Currently they are developing many computer based initiatives around the DDI program. I do not believe they have enough available resources to pull away technicians to work on a non-moneymaking venture

This is actually the precise reason they let chat go, there weren't enough available resources to keep it up while they were working on the Digital Initiative. Yes WotC had a chat until about August last year when it finally failed completely. And this is from what I understand of the business decision made by the company.

If you want, there are other chats available, Phoenix Lore chat(the site is linked in my signature, you don't need an account for the chat) or Weredragon Magazine You would need to sign up for an account at WD to get into the chat though.

Also they would need to either employ moderators or accept volunteers, and there would been to be a LOT of moderators. The spam could be impressivley horrific.

The chat room was based on old software that was optimized for the old servers.

When they moved to new servers, they did so fully expecting the chatrooms to go down the tubes. They didn't, and kept working for a while, but then they started to go south, and the decision was made to take them offline and not start them up again.

Then don't you think that it would be wise for them to take the bit about teh Chatrooms being down for technical difficulties? It would tend to make newbies think that they maybe back up soon, despite them never having been up for as long as I can remember.
