I know this doesn't have much to do with DnD, but I see a lot of unqiue names. I see some I don't get because it must mean something to poster. I see some that are awesome and wonder were the person got it.
So how and why did you choose your forum name?

My name is from a mythological/historical figure named Adrastus (described by Herodotus) who was extremely honorable, but kept having terrible misfortunes befall him. He twice accidentally killed people close to him -- he sought forgiveness the first time, refused it the second time, but received it anyway, and eventually killed himself in frustration at his doomed fortune.
I felt bad for the guy, so about 10 years ago when I was creating an internet name, I thought I should give him a second chance, with better luck this time.
My profile photo is the Question from Justice League Unlimited. I just started using it here, but have been using it in other boards and such for years.

At the time, I was really into WoW, and you needed to sign in to view Dragon Magazine content. I couldn't really see myself ever posting on a Dungeons and Dragons forum, so I picked a rather common WoW joke and went foreward.

I don't play WoW, although I am vaguely aware of the reference you used. Thus, it seems novel to me, and I chuckle whenever I see you posting b/c of the joke.
Then when I decided to post I thought I needed a clever pun that referenced D&D somehow, but I did not want to go with something that sounded very powerful. I looked at a bunch of monster names on the SRD sight and after much consideration decided to go with Gelatinous Dodecahedron. However, that was too many characters and got rejected. After several other attempts at different polyhedron names, it accepted GelatinousOctahedron without any spaces.
I have two usernames that I use just about everywhere: fewilcox and kitsunegami.
"fewilcox" was the username assigned to me when I started at NC State University back in '97 and I've used it for just about everything since then (except blogger and twitter since other people have the name but never post anything; grrrrr).
But that's not a very good name for MMO characters so several years back I came up kitsunegami, a fake Japanese word. The kitsune refers to my love of foxes (ever since I saw The Fox and the Hound as a kid) while the -gami is a reference to Duo Maxwell (aka "Shinigami") on Gundam Wing which was my favorite anime at the time. Since then I've used kitsunegami for most gaming-related sites (unless I'm a judge, like I am for HeroClix).
If kitsunegami was an actual word then it would either mean "god of foxes", "fox god", or "graceful fox" depending upon which translator you ask, or possibly something else entirely if you were to ask someone who actually speaks Japanese.
I just used my real life name.

Actually, it originates with the early online FPSs (Quake, Unreal, et al.) it was worth a chuckle whenever the game announced "Someone has stolen the flag!" or "Someone killed Player-X"

If you can find a gaming store that runs LFR games, you could bring her there and get higher levels. It lets you 'port the character from one game to another while keeping the XP and treasure you win. Nice option if you can't find a regular home-game.
Downside is that LFR tends to focus more on combat and less on role-playing, although you can certainly still get your role-playing in if you are dedicated.
Ronrick was a name a friend made for my first WoW character, a dwarf priest. Being terrible at making names I started using it for everything from my xbox live tag, to my band name in the first guitar hero.

Then in '97 I met my best friend for life, the only guy cool enough to come over to my house and play Starcraft with me on my dad's LAN. The first time we sat down to play we puzzled momentarily over screen names as he had none. Being that Queen is (along with beagles, "underspill", and enthusiastic quaffing) one of the staples of our rapport, he opted for 'MrFahrenheit'. Always a sucker for matched duos, I invented his counterpart and we got down to the business of galactic domination.
It was just a bit of a lark at first, but once we got to Team Fortress Classic we branded the names Celsius and Fahrenheit into every map we found. I have never seen a Sniper or a Pyro which were our equals individually, and nothing could stand up to his blazing fury and my cool calculation combined. That turned the nicks into identities so strong we've commemorated them with °C and °F tats which we gladly show off like the battlescars they represent.
On a separate note, I take some pleasure in the knowledge that my father before me had the CB radio handle 'Silver Spike' and my grandmother before him was known in the carnival as 'Gypsy Mama'; there's a sense of geekish heritage to that which I intend to pass on to any progeny of my own whenever zie chooses a name for zirself.
EDIT: Heck, I forgot that I showed up here under the nick Ascian until Gleemax decided it didn't want me to use that account ever again. It was only within the past five years or so that I stopped trying to have a different nick for every part of my digital life.

Thanks luckyadrastus. Yeah, that's the main reason why I haven't been so quick to hop into an Encounters game at the local gaming store, they are definitely too combat oriented with little to no roleplay.
For me, the great draw of Dungeons and Dragons has always been that roleplay aspect. To build character and story. That's what I love about it, it's what keeps me coming back.
If I want pointless combat, I can log into WoW.
I have just recently joined a home-game, (Trysta Riversong incarnation #3) we have met once, but due to scheduling conflicts, we can only do it once every 2-3 months.
It's a start, but it doesn't whet my appetite.

LOL, sorry. Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist who is a quadriplegic and as such, speaks through a voice box.

For the 7 or 8 people who don't know, Nyarlathotep is from stories by HP Lovecraft.
I go by it here because I go by that name just about everywhere on the ol' interwebz, I can't imagine using anything else (Okay, once I wanted to go incognito on another board I posted at so I created an alternate pseudonym of Fun Gus). I've been going by it since I first started posting on little dial-in local BBS's many moons ago. I am and always have been a fan of Lovecraft and I have a weird affininity for trickster figures in mythology and Nyarlathotep combines both of these.
The number is the year my father was bonr (1974).
Since my name is "Joseph" he couldn't quite say it so instead he setlled on "Jo-Puff." The name stuck...
One day my mother picked me up from a 6th-grade band practice with him in the back seat of the car. She walked into the door and, as you would imagine, all the girls in band went "awwww..." Laura, one of my good chick friends was talking to him and apparently mentioned me... He said something about "Jo-Puff" and then the name stuck...

Recently I have been using another username, Soullos. If you see that user name on Xbox Live, Audio Surd leader boards, rpg.net, Steam community ID, WoW and some others I can't remember, it's me. It just sounds cooler, and less embarrassing to a degree, but more more importantly it's the name of the my campaign setting for D&D that I started back in 3.0. The avatar is a resized and blonded out pic from the Leisure Suit Larry game that bombed a few years back, and is supposed to be a representation of Annabelle, a character from the Traveler's Respite thread that was in the "Mature" section a bit ago. I still post on the new site, though I have more than the one character.
As for how I came about the name, well, I play surly quite well, so wanted a name to match. I thought of the term crotchety old bastard, well, I didn't want a name that ended with ety, too cutesy feminine, and I didn't want to be called crotch, so I switched a few letters and there you have it, Kratch.

Operations is the name I have been using around the net for about 8 years now. It's what those who know me know me as. Needless to say, I was annoyed when they killed gleemax and my old DDI account at the same time.
He started out as Jack Silversword, but after he got a few levels under his belt and became a Planeswalker, he started requesting that people start callin him THE Silversword. Of course no one ever did. But I thought it sounded cooler on here than Jack.

Sillen translates from swedish as "The Herring"
It originated back some 25 years ago in school, my classmates teased me about my finnish last name Sillankorva, wich sounds kind of like "Herringsausage" in swedish.
Then it just stuck with me for all eternety.
I've since used the name for an eladrin invoker of Lolth (from before her war against the other Seldarine) who became an archfey of the Gloaming Court in my version of the 4th edition Core setting, and for the god of darkness, dreams and arcane magic in my homebrew campaign setting, Zurvan.
Ironically, these three characters, while having quite a lot in common otherwise (pointy ears, amethyst-coloured eyes, a talent for arcane magic and lucid dreaming), have quite different alignments. The original Malkhor started off lawful evil (in D&D terms), moved to chaotic evil once corrupted by the patron demon of his assassinated mistress (don't ask) and might possibly have earned himself a neutral good alignment by the time he eventually died (sacrificing his life to save a high elf woman he'd fallen in love with - again, don't ask). The second Duskweaver went from lawful neutral (Lolth's alignment before she fell into the Abyss in this version) to somewhere closer to neutral good in the modern era. In Zurvan, Mahreh 'The Duskweaver' is a chaotic good deity, though with the emphasis rather more on 'chaotic' than 'good' - essentially the 'mostly-benevolent trickster' archetype.
I also used the name for the first character I ever played in D&D 4th edition: Valarna Duskweaver (since retconned to be the great-great-great-granddaughter of Duskweaver #2) was an eladrin fighter/wizard, though she'd be an assault swordmage now that the class actually exists.

Well, Roslyn is my name, so no big surprise there.
My other common Forum name is Sansa Stark, which also isn't too hard to guess where I gots from.

Okay, so I lied... lol.
Like most of us who've posted, Sir John Garrett - "Mad Jack" - was a character I've statted up in pretty much every rpg I've ever played, and is also my standard handle on any sort of videogame and most forums... I've always used some sort of grinning skull as a logo, usually with a hat on it. My current avatar is a painted cast-resin skull that my brother gave me for my birthday a few years ago - the hat it's wearing is my favorite hat, an Irish-style hat handmade by the Hana Hat Company of Dublin. My granfather wore the same kind of hat, and my father, my uncle and my brother have all had similar hats at various times.
See, my first name is Sean, which is the Irish version of John, and when I made my Confirmation in the Catholic Church as a teenager I also took the name John, after my uncle (who's also my godfather)... So, I'm actually Jack2, lol. Plus, Jack is just a bleep-ing cool name.
"Jack" has always sort of been my alter-ego, almost a split personality. Jack is Spiderman to my Peter Parker...or maybe the Green Goblin to my Norman Osborn - that little voice in the back of my head that keeps egging me on, saying, "C'mon. Push the button... do it. You know you wanna see what happens if you push it...PUSH THE BUTTON!"
Jack has issues with impulse control, and respecting boundaries. Jack has been known to cackle. Jack is The Devil Himself. Me, I have trouble talking to people I don't know well. Jack flirts outrageously with nuns and female cops. Jack was the name I used to go by back in the Bad Old Days of my early teenaged years when I was a borderline sociopath and hung out with a "bad element", lol. (I'm much better now... no, really.) A lot of people who knew me thought people called me Jack because one of my many knicknames was "Ripper" and assumed it was because I was a freaking lunatic who used to carry a pair of British Army combat daggers all the time. I'd actually picked up the name Ripper because despite only being 13 years old I'd somehow managed to outdrive the local cops on a small handful of occasions - after one particular incident, one of my heavily chemically-enhanced passengers insisted on telling everyone he met for the next two weeks how much I totally "ripped"... (It was the mid-80's, which explains a lot of things - including how a 13-yr-old learned to drive from watching the Dukes of Hazard and playing arcade games...)
In any event, I've pretty much been going by the name Mad Jack, Madjack, MadJackGarrett or some variation both on and offline for years.
Interesting trivia:
A friend's young daughter once pointed out to me that if you say Madjack seven times really fast, on the seventh time you'll end up saying "Magic"...
Being a triple-classed character as a regent in Birthright allowed me to gain massive amounts of regency points and gold bars for upgrading my domain. I was pretty worthless in actual combat after a while into the campaign, but my domain was second to none, allowing me to field armies that could crush all opposition.
Graufalke is German for Greyhawk. That's my shout-out to Gary Gygax and one of the 2e settings I owned but never got to run or play in.

It started out when I got into browsergames; I used my old handle but the game involved building cities and I didn't know what to call mine, so I settled for what basically translates to "Rough bunnies" for fun and then later added more names like "Angry beavers", "Evil hamsters" and things like that.
Of course I played the part; my armies of rough bunnies, evil hamsters and angry beavers spread around the map, stomping down on all enemies. People though it was pretty funny. So I decided to have some more fun and RP the game, from the alter-ego of what basically translates to "Fluffy the killer bunny"
That name kinda stuck; and I later changed my gamehandle to Pluisje (which is a name for a rabbits, kinda like Fluffy) and then played as a murderous sociopath (it confuses people to no end) for kicks.
Of course, in Dutch the name Pluisje is often taken (mostly by people who actually are very cute and friendly and nice to other players) so I decided to tack on an extra 'n' to the end, which is the wrong way to make the word a plural (it should be an 's') but it sounds even cuter when pronounced.
As it stands here, it's a name that 95% of people can't pronounce, and the remaining 5% probably wonder why an adult would call himself "Fluffies" and why can't even spell it right.
It just amuses me to have a silly name.
He is a little Maori boy from a series of children's books set in pre-European New Zealand. In Maori, puku means "belly" and nui means "big".
Although my puku is now larger than I'd like it to be, that is not why I chose the name. It was more that New Zealand culture was still really new and exciting to me at the time (I lost my rose-colored glasses some time ago; living in a foreign country gives you a totally different perspective to the one you get when you're a tourist in it) and virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Maori names and words all had a nice exotic ring to them and were pretty rare on the internet. On the few sites where someone's beaten me to it (like eBay), I go by "pukunui81" instead.
As for why it's all lower case? It's not because I want to be ee cummings. It's more that I just find it aesthetically pleasing.

I got bored of trying to invent 'clever' forum handles. I like anime, and I like a lot of them, but Sailormoon is the easiest to have fun with. No I'm not obsessed with the show, I merely like how it's the cliche non Dragonball/Naruto show to have fun with.
I am usually some silly version of anime name thing avatar on any site other than two where it would only be intrusive to the site.
My name is just one of my early AD&D character names. Athalias was a first edition Elven Ranger/Mage who happened to roll well enough to begin play with psionics by the first edition AD&D rules. That caused him to remain memorable to me, because I had over a dozen AD&D characters, but Athalias was the only one with psionics. The others are memorable too, but for other reasons, and Athalias was the first of my early AD&D character names that was not already in use. Names that were rejected include:

Lanthalsa
Joshua
Josiah
After those rejections went with Athalias.

My uncle is a huge john wayne fan and I used to do something that caused him to see some connection. So I kept the nickname partly because of that and also because I'm from a hood where everyone had a nickname and most of them were stupid gangster names, like smokey, snowman, popeye and other crap like that. As a white boy, I refused to take a ghetto-fab name and I just really like the name Duke. Plus my uncle kicks ass.
As for the 5150 part, I can't really go into that. Let's just say, I am 5150 while also being the "Son of" 5150. ( if you know what it means, I still won't discuss it)
And that's how and why I picked my forum name, the same forum name I use everywhere and I'll fight anyone to the death for it. (someone used it on youtube, he's on the list)

As for my current avvy, that's Rena from Higurashi with a wobbuffet's face photoshopped over hers. I have no idea why (Well, I requested a wobbuffet with Rena's face, but some wires got crossed, and I kinda like it anyway).

Anyway about my name. First there was Pofruin. Which stands for Probablity of Ruin. Special term in math course I was having at the time (chance for company to go bancrupt in some model). I used it at some internet caffe when played some stupid game to pass time when waiting for my exam time to come around. Since then I used it sparringly almost everywhere.
Then I came to these forums and made an account with that name. It was when i was playing Magic though. and i simply moved on with my life. When I got into DnD (well got more into it). I decided to read up in those forums and find out I cant use that name since I lost all info.
Thus AivaRuin was born, Aiva stands for my first name (Aivaras. Break your tongues English speakers :P) and my long time nick. So there.

Everytime I see ZB's name, I get this image in my head of that abominable "Dancing Baby" animation that was so big on the internet a few years ago, except this time, its skin is beginning to rot, it's missing an eye, and as it's dancing it's arm falls off...
I'll change that... He is pretty good. He knows when he makes a mistake and often backspaces and corrects it before it hits the screen. But sometimes things go through anyway.
So there he was, making mistakes one night and he decides to blame his pet typo demon Webster. Webster being the name of the dictionary company. There's a whole profile for it and all.
When I first started posting as Webster, I would use as little words as possible, mostly being "Heh" for good/yes, "meh" for neutral/don't care and "feh" for bad/no.
Since I'm using it more that I did back then, I have to "talk" more.
My forum name comes from the name of my first character in the old days of Dark Age of Camelot. I played a troll skald, and wanted to call him Obsidian, but the name was taken, so I chose Obsidius instead (which turns out to the name of both a Roman cavalry commander and the name of a monster in a Godzilla game).
Since that day, I've always used Obsidius for on my online character, or a variant thereof (such as Obsidia the human female cleric, Obsidium the dwarf paladin or Obsidriel the night elf hunter).
When I started playing WoW I picked Borax as my character's name, added an "e" at the end cos I liked the way it looked, and became Boraxe. I spent a lot of time playing WoW and being referred to as Boraxe so it's a natural online moniker for me now.
Mine came from an OLD 2e dwarven battlerager I had. He "weren't none too smart", but really packed a wallop in combat. Unlike Gimli, he had no issues with being tossed into combat; early and often.
During his introduction to his new party, the bard asked him, "What's your name, friend dwarf?" Because I hadn't fully named him yet, his response was:
"Uhhh, I'm Grond! ...of...um...Clan...clannnnn...BATTLERAGE!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" After two other dwarven battleragers from Clan Battlerage succeeded the ill-fated Grond, the name just kinda stuck. ;)
My name is from Sean Connery's character in the Hunt for Red October. I usually use the inverse, Ramius Marco, as opposed to the character Marco Ramius. I thought the name sounded cool, and was somewhat obscure, but not totally our there. I've used it in MMOs, forums, D&D, etc for about 10 years. Another name I use in MMOs if Ramius is taken, is Rico (varaint spellings may apply) based on the villain from Judge Dredd.
