Why does WOTC make products you can't discuss here?

The the BoVD and TBoEF, if they're worried about kids being exposed to it, they could make a room that requires credit card(just for ID purposes, you'd pay nothing)/age verification.

They no longer want to acknowledge that such books exist. They are attempting to distance themselves from them as they are percieved by the company as a blemish to their family friendly image. That's my guess atleast.

Not sure. Never really cared.

Yes, the BoEF is third-party (Valar Publishing, Inc), so WotC is in no way required to (or should be expected to) support discussion of it on their forums.

The reason that WotC doesn't want the BoVD/BoED discussed on the boards is because they wanted all of the boards to be available for all ages, and the "Mature" boards weren't appropriate for all ages. It wouldn't be cost-efficient for them to make an "adults-only" section of the boards, requiring different programs/access/monitoring/etc, especially since those books were produced for a now-defunct edition.

I also suspect part of the reason is that the "cost" (in terms of monitoring and CoC violation) of discussing such things wasn't worth the "benefit", in WotC's eyes.

As for the reason for making a product that can't be discussed - they made the product when it could be discussed (they made the "Mature" boards for that). The cost/benefit ratio just changed enough to not warrant keeping it around, I surmise.

True. Besides, the only thing that you would need to discuss about BoVD and not about any other book would violate CoC.

It's too bad. I liked the Mature board.

Also, does anyone know what happened to Valar?

No clue, I never participated in PbP games. On that or any other board.

I didn't know there was a mature forum. If I did I wouldn't be hanging around with you nerds.

There was a fan fiction thread. It was entertaining when it wasn't disturbing.

Other than that it was mostly the same "is it evil for a paladin to do this?" stuff, except the subjects were usually rather graphic.

Oh, and there were links to "fantasy art" that bordered on the tasteless, occasionally.

Really, people used the mature boards mostly as an excuse to be immature, and say things that would violate the CoC on every other board.

Well we should start our own Mature D&D forum called "Tomb of Horrors: After Dark."

You can diccuss the Book of Exalted Deeds and Book of Vile Darkness in the general forums.
Some of the topics therein are difficult because you must say with in the code of conduct.

However, that other book mentioned isn't by WotC as already mentioned.

I here there was a cybering section on the mature boards. Is this a myth?

It is a myth. However enough of the forum was "adult" enough that the higher ups killed it almost immediately after looking at the forum.
Most of the active threads where transfered out onto other parts of the board after that.

Immediately? It was around for years before they finally nixed it.

If you ever miss the mature boards just say boobs a hundred times and you'll pretty much be recreating the whole experience. Those boards were just one big waste of space.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion. But there were actually some pretty good threads on that board, concerning the BoVD, BoED and some other more "adult"* aspects of spells and such, some ideas on cultural practices of some races and so on.

And before anyone counters that noone needs to know the sexual practices of a society, sociologically those things are just as important as what language a culture speaks.

* - And by adult, I don't just mean boobs. The more graphic and horrific aspects of spells et al were redirected there so that noone would accidentally stumble upon a bit of a graphic description.

I dunno.... It gave me the chance of hooking up with a T-girl :P

On a less disturbing note: There's a forum for third parties around here

Immediately? It was around for years before they finally nixed it.

It was After they looked at it.

When they looked the whole forum was locked fast enough that one of the WotC employees couldn't manage to get to the computer fast enough to post a explanation in that forum as to why it was being locked.

Exactly where was this mature board? And how could it be around for years without them knowing/looking at it?! If it was on this site.

Remember how 3.0 was published with crippling balance flaws that forced them to make 3.5 a few years later?

Yeah. Sorta like that.

... Right, so you're saying it never had moderation, and despite the rest of the forums knowing what was going on in there this never got to any of the people in charge? For several years? Well, I can't attack a position like that.

Tye "Mature" Board was right above Oriental Adventures IIRC.

The moderation on this forum is not proactive, nor was it the moderators that looked at it and shut it down. It was the high ups.

Moderators show up when someone hits the report button instead of them looking for CoC violations. I reported at least one thread on the Mature Board and it was deleted. So moderators did show up there.

A short while before the shutdown. like a month or two, a complaint was launched in the Community Business board about the general behavior and state of that board and an attent to clean it up was launched.

I imagine that the BoED and BoVD were such bad books that WotC wants to never be reminded of it again.

If people are serious aobut a 'mature' DnD forum, I'd happily host it on my boards. I need the posters anyway.

I loved the (im)mature boards. It was a trash can, but a very amusing one. And once in a while, you could actually learn something there, that wasn't even related to rule 34. I fully understand WotC's reason for not wanting it, but I was still sad to see it go.
