I've noticed that the tone thread was just closed for what ever reasons why. Could some one explain to me the reasons behind closing threads?

Customer Service, not Community Management, closes threads. You can send in inquiry to Customer Service at the link provided below. Nobody in this forum has the knowledge to be able to answer your question.

I saw nothing particularly wrong about that thread but it looks like someone complained. Is that all it takes to close a thread? Do the ORC's actually read the thread before it's closed?

Once again, you need to address complaints and queries about Customer Service (and the ORCs are part of Customer Service) to Customer Service. Asking this question in this forum is not a productive use of your time.

Interesting, "not a productive use of my time", I appreciate the advice but since it's my time to use in what ever manner I wish I want to see how this plays out thanks. I'm not looking for an ORC to answer why that last thread was closed specificly mostly why threads like that one are closed in general and no it does not have to be an ORC who answers either.

A thread gets closed for one of two reasons (generally speaking):

  • The VCL asked for the thread to be closed
  • Customer Service shut the thread down due to a larger number of reported posts

Based on WizO_Wyvern's* post at the end of the thread in question, I think it's safe to infer that it was closed for Option #2.

* Yes, yes. I know the name changed to ORC rather than WizO. I still refer to this forum as the "metaboard" though, so you'll have to excuse me if it takes me a while to let go of names I know and like around here. ;)

Then that begs to ask the question If I start reporting a post will it then be shut down? Does it have to be a large number of people who report that post?

That's fine. But I was assuming you wanted an answer by somebody with knowledge. All we can do is quote what ORC_Wyvern already wrote in that thread. Anything else is speculation.

The only people who can intelligibly answer your question is Customer Service. I'm not saying they will. But nobody who posts in these forums can.

Whether pursuing this thread under such circumstances is productive or not is of course up to you. I apologize for assuming you would consider that to be an unproductive use of your time.

The only "answers" you will get from the community are "we don't know" and "they are oppressive regime trying to take away my fr33d0m5!". You will get no actual answers, you will get opinion.

Threads are closed only when less severe types of moderation (editing, deletion, etc) fail to stop further CoC violations. It is generally the final outcome of a "flame war". Typically, threads are closed so the participants have a chance to calm down and so that all of the offending material can be properly removed. All closed threads are then reported to the VCL team so that they can be evaluated as to whether or not the thread should be reopened, remain closed, or if a new thread should be made to continue the discussion.

Wrecan is correct however. For information regarding any specific moderation taken against your account, you will have to email us through the Customer Service link. We can only talk in very broad generalizations publicly, so as not to violate the privacy of any of our posters.

Apology accepted and I apologies If I came off as being a bit snarky, and it's OK I just wanted to start the conversation. I'm sure what you are saying is correct though.

Thanks for the update but no moderation was taken against my account. Again thanks for the heads up

Depends.

If you report just any old post, then nothing is going to happen. Without any actual violations, your frequent reports are just wasting CS's time and won't result in any action. (unless your frequent invalid reports are themselves a problem; I don't know if they are or not...)

If you report several different posts in one thread, each of which is at least borderline, then yes -- eventually that thread is likely to get locked, either because the VCL has decided it's gone long enough or CS has decided to shut things down, as outlined by the ever-helpful WizO_Tao.

So the reason some threads get closed may be arbitrary?

Not arbitrary, aggregate. One or two things may not get a thread closed, but a combination of problems and an outlook that shows the potential for more is what tends to get them shut down. There are certain "auto-lock" infractions as well; restarting a previously locked thread, leading with Edition War rhetoric, etc.

Real world politics and real world religion are two more auto-shut downs.

From what I can tell, it was one poster who jacked the thread, pulled it off topic (he tried to make the thread all about himself rather than the general tone of the forums) and basically flamed and complained that no one liked him because he didn't like 4e. People calmly tried to explain to him why they didn't like him (his attitude stinks, basically) and he continued to flame. That's likely the reason.

Pure opinion and speculation at best...

Actually, some other posters started flaming and attacking this one guy, and then said he was making the thread all about himself... when in actuality, the flamers were making it about him. But since that guy was a known 4e disliker, he was the one to go...

Oh, and there are bad attitudes and ****-poor personalities on both sides:D

The reason people started "attacking and flaming" this one guy was because he had a terrible attitude. Ironic when you think about it.

"An outlook that shows potential for problems" can be just about any topic, so that the decisions seem arbitrary may an understandable opinion.

There are a couple ways that 'problem' threads are shut down though. A lot of threads that raise questions about the current edition are not shut down, but moved to a different and less appropriate forum with less traffic (i.e. a post about at-will powers and their interactions with a non-combat environment was moved to the 'traps and tactics' forum). Strange but true!
