| #1narukagamiAug 27, 2009 19:25:26 | These new forums are terrible. Period. Wizards will ignore any and all complaints. Why? Because in their mind we're just complaining because they're new, and they think we'll "get used to it" and come to like it. No. I for one will not. And I'm giving Wizards a week to address our issues before I'm gone. |
| #2Duke5150Aug 27, 2009 19:34:01 | I don't think you're going about it the right way. Threats won't motivate wotc to do anything. It never has in the past. I'm sure wotc knew some people would hate the new set up and ragequit and I'm sure wotc is ok with that. I also miss the old style but its gone and thats that. |
| #3glaive_21842Aug 27, 2009 19:34:27 | Even if they don't listen to anything else, they'd better give us our goddamn [sblock] back! Without it, the CharOps Handbooks are basically unreadable! |
| #4GoTexansAug 27, 2009 19:34:52 | I agree with you this new set up is absolute garbage. I've seen free forums that have a better layout and desgin to them. |
| #5scipioAug 27, 2009 19:37:26 |
This. The old forums are gone and threats to WotC aren't going to bring em back. If it really is that important that you feel the need to quit over them, then sorry to see you go. Overall, I think the majority will learn to adapt to the new community site, especially once all the bugs *cough*wewantsblocksback*cough* are worked out. |
| #6narukagamiAug 27, 2009 19:45:22 | Its not that I want the old forums back, its just these new forums are loaded with problems. Plus a lot of the functionality that made the old forums easy to use, that could have easily been ported over, are gone completely, which is a huge step backwards. |
| #7AeonAug 27, 2009 19:54:30 | Voicing your oppinion is ok cause its your oppinion. Of course I dont know why you expect anyone else to care how you are feeling. What makes you so special that anyone would care? What makes you so special that you have to post so everyone can see instead of taking it up with Wotc in private, one on one? When I am upset about something I take it to the person or company not other people or their customers. Ragequiting = childish; but its damn funny that people are so caught up in something so small in life that they take every little change personal. |
| #8Duke5150Aug 27, 2009 19:57:47 |
I understand this completely and feel basically the same. But we have to handle it in a way that will be constructive. The new forums look like a foundation, they do not look finished at all. Give wotc some time and maybe the end result will be worth it. |
| #9narukagamiAug 27, 2009 19:58:07 |
I'm surprised you could even read this thread way up on that horse... |
| #10AeonAug 27, 2009 19:59:50 |
|
| #11NifftAug 27, 2009 20:00:08 | What makes you so special that anyone would care? What makes you so special that you have to post so everyone can see instead of taking it up with Wotc in private, one on one? The whole point of forums is: discussing stuff in public, so everyone can see each other's opinions, critique them, and get a handle on how other people feel about stuff. When I am upset about something I take it to the person or company not other people or their customers. Then why bother responding to this "customer" in public? Shouldn't you be sending him a private message? Ragequiting = childish; but its damn funny that people are so caught up in something so small in life that they take every little change personal. Personally, I'm annoyed that this place lost so much functionality. I'll vote with my posts, though, and continue to post more elsewhere. Good gaming, -- N |
| #12AeonAug 27, 2009 20:12:12 | There really is nothing to discuss the op is just voicing his opinion and fears. He says that the new forums are terrible and Wotc will ignore any criticism. Those are all statements that aren't open to discussion cause you aren't going to change his mind. Will Wotc listen to us if we dont like the new forums? What do you think of the new forums? Those are discussable topics. Not Wizards is just going to ignore us. I brought it to the forums cause he did and that was the first post I read and it was already negative bs. |
| #13MockAug 27, 2009 20:31:11 | Ignoring the foray into what constitutes "discussable" (since we seem to be discussing it pretty well, in spite of the obvious danger!), to the OP: Yes, they probably will. I would file customer service requests if the help system still works. I strongly doubt they will amount to anything given that this represents a considerable investment of time and money for Wizards. My recommendation is not to wait a week. Instead, write it off for the moment and come back in a month, or three months, and see if they fixed it up to the point you think it's usable. That's my plan - I'll peek back in now and again, and if there are improvements, I may resume the daily visit habit I had. If not, then I won't. |
| #14vexarAug 27, 2009 20:34:27 | One word. Beta. Kay, thanks, bye. |
| #15MockAug 27, 2009 20:39:52 | I dunno. Online communities aren't exactly innovative technology; "beta" is only sort of an excuse. |
| #16RustmonsterAug 27, 2009 21:08:15 |
That's not how "beta" is being used. They aren't saying that it is a beta of the entire concept of an online community. It is a beta of this particular setup. It's a beta because they want to see how it works and if it can be improved. It's not an excuse, it's the entire point. |
| #17WebsterAug 27, 2009 21:13:47 | Wizards is listening. You have to get the basics down and make sure it works before tweaking it to personal tastes. It's like building a house. You have to have the foundation in and stable before putting up the walls. And even then, you have to put up the walls before you put paint on it. Complaining about the paint at this stage only says you want a different color, but there are other priorities first. |
| #18ArmisaelAug 27, 2009 21:15:44 | And why couldn't the development team, y'know, implement everything on a small scale, test it for a couple months, THEN launch it for beta testing instead of getting a half-assed forum out? Would have made a lot more sense, really. But then again, Wizards is run by monkeys and we all knew that already. :P |
| #19reddevilzAug 27, 2009 21:16:26 | whenever you have a change someone will hate it. Hopfully they will fix the problems [sblock] being one of those. Hopefully new themes and also a spell checker will also be added in. lets hope for the best and not jump to conclusions... yet. |
| #20MockAug 27, 2009 21:16:56 | I know how "beta" is being used. Since no feature here is poorly understood stuff, "beta" only goes so far to excuse problems, even if this is the first time anyone ever put them all together this way. Before you climb down my throat, though - I tend to get a bug up my nose about interfaces/layouts/look and feel, and if something turns me off, it's pretty much over. I won't use Fantasy Grounds, because of the interface. I really dislike Dundjinni, because of the interface. I won't use Google Wave until and unless they fix their freakin' scrollbars. So I'm seriously picky. This site turns me off; "beta" won't get it a pass. If, some months down the line, it no longer turns me off, then I'll resume my productivity-killing ways. Until then, Wizards managed to create a forum that will enhance my business productivity. I agree with Aeon - "rage quit" is unnecessary. I also agree with Narukagami - WotC is likely to stick with this unless there was some sort of pitchforks-and-torches agrarian revolt. I even agree that "beta" means things will change. It's just not absolution. |
| #21ArmisaelAug 27, 2009 21:18:35 | The real problem is that this is so buggy and unpolished it feels like an alpha, not a beta. It feels like WotC skipped the small scale testing and design phase and just went for the big release, essentially making themselves look like morons for not following basic project design guidelines. It's very sad, really, because it makes them look like a bad fansite or something. |
| #22WebsterAug 27, 2009 22:01:59 | You don't need torches and pitchforks. |
| #23WotC_ScottRAug 27, 2009 22:26:37 |
People are listening.I am not sure it is gonna get fixed in a week but we want this to be a community you want to be involved with. Thanks for the feedback so far.
|
| #24narukagamiAug 27, 2009 22:55:11 | Eh, I'll count that as being "addressed." Fixed is another matter entirely, which I hope will get done soon. Given some more time to cool down and poke around more, I can honestly say my opinion on the new forums have not changed, but I'm willing to wait and see where things go from here. First thing I hope you fix is thread subscriptions, even if you can't restore all our old subscriptions (Them even gone in the first place is just aggravating!) can you at least make some way to view what subscribed threads have new posts in them? Why was that even removed?!
|
| #25tinweAug 27, 2009 22:59:50 | Wizards is listening. You have to get the basics down and make sure it works before tweaking it to personal tastes. In most sucessful web development projects, the "foundation" is laid and solidified before you build the freakin' "house" on top. At best, this forum change is trying to do too much, too fast, and then work out the bugs with live users. That is not at all a recipe for success. |
| #26viktor_von_doomAug 27, 2009 23:03:38 | Actually kind of like this new version. And being able to have custom avatars is nice. Though the the subfolder setup is a bit weird. |
| #27lokiareAug 27, 2009 23:12:31 | Why didn't they just use a very popular modern forum setup? I mean this has all been done before, there is no excuse for making a crappy forum, except for this one: 'I think Hasbro told WotC that if they destroy the customer base for D&D, then all of the employees would get a huge payout when they get a "stimulus" package from the government, and that is why WotC seems bent on getting rid of every last D&D fan' But its probably not true. (I hope its not true). |
| #28duskystrangerAug 27, 2009 23:13:44 | The definition of "beta" has changed over time. It used to mean "the development team and QA has tested this as much as we can and we can't break it, so let's release it to real users who do things we would never think of doing." Now it means "It doesn't crash when doing our specified set of test cases on the features we have decided to release at this point." WotC's developers are just using the term as it is now defined. The fact that it's as buggy and annoying as Windows Me or Vista Beta is well within operational parameters.

| #30lokiareAug 27, 2009 23:16:40 |
In other words WotC sucks? |
| #31jinneticsAug 28, 2009 0:03:50 | Some people will never be happy. I think it's a vast improvement - what forums should look like and feel like in the modern world. |
| #32scipioAug 28, 2009 0:27:34 |
Yep, it's the 100 dollar bill principle at work. If WotC were to start putting 100 dollar bills in all the M:tG booster packs, all that would happen is they'd be flooded with complaints about how they folded the bills wrong. Basically, they WotC customer base is the ultimate in Unpleasable Fanbase. |
| #33narukagamiAug 28, 2009 0:29:52 | I take it neither of you have even bothered to read anyone's complaints at all, have you? |
| #34scipioAug 28, 2009 0:33:51 |
If you look at some of my posts on other threads, I've made complaints of my own. Some of the complaints are valid (especially the bits about the new threads/popular threads boxes, I hate those things), but we also have word from WotC employees that this is not the final state of the new site, and that they are working to fix things. As a software developer I know that any given piece of software, especially one in beta, is going to have bugs and glitches and can always use work. I'm willing to give them the time they need to smooth things out before passing final judgment. |
| #35lokiareAug 28, 2009 0:47:03 | The difference is that a 'beta' is feature complete and will only have bug fixes from that point on, this is not a 'beta' this is a mockery of what could have been. |
| #36bogsnesAug 28, 2009 1:09:21 | I just want to know: WHERE DID THE ARCHIVES GO?
Okay, fair enough, it was already hard to read them, but still... You can't remove them! think of how many homebrews that did disappear as an example... |
| #37crazysamaritanAug 28, 2009 1:33:49 |
I am unaware of any other website that forces consumers who have used a working model for several years remove that model, and present a beta to replace it. (not to mention the alpha that worked better) |
| #38morvannonAug 28, 2009 5:20:47 |
What, less readable and functional than the old ones? Whatever floats your boat, I guess. |
| #39kratchAug 28, 2009 7:30:29 |
Are you aware that there is a group and forum specifically for people to voice their feature requests and bug issues found? There is an entire group and forum dedicated to the very thing you claim wizards will not do. Maybe had you spent even a little time examining the new site rather then deciding to ragequit, you'd have found it and been able to offer some constructive critism instead of the kneejerk hate-on your demonstraiting now. Here's a hint, the group is called Wizards Community HQ. |
| #40lynadianyaAug 28, 2009 8:27:30 | I don't want to have to hunt down this new group and post on their blog/board/whatever. I want that new group to be HERE, in the main forums, discussing whatever they need to discuss, whether it by sane and rational or pure vitriol. Put it where everyone can read it...don't hide then in closets with like minded people in that same closet. Groups scatter the community. It turns it into school yard cliques. You know, growing up as a geek, I really don't like the schoolyard clique. I would like to attempt to avoid it here. I just hope that all the good information, creative suggestions, technical discussions on character classes and such, doesn't get taken from the main forums and dropped into these little groups.
|
| #41EkkoeAug 28, 2009 8:31:18 | These are all such minor things, so easily ignored. Are you really such a pessimistic person that you have to make such a big deal out of all these little things and make WotC seem like some sort of greedy company? It's a free board! Long as it's free you can't really demand anyone to do it better, let alone call them out on their mistakes. Want it to be done better? Start sponsoring or start your own. WotC didn't rob you, they just made a change. Some like it, some don't. If you really want to be this upset about it go ahead, just don't drag others down with you. |
| #42kratchAug 28, 2009 8:42:17 |
When you say " you want it HERE" are you reffering to the DnD boards? or the D20 Modern Boards, or the Star Wars boards? or all of the above? Do you really think it is better to have 15 scattered boards containing numerous threads about complaints and feature requests from people who are so closed minded that they can't even be bothered to look around the site a little over getting constructive feedback from those who aren't demanding their old forums back and can actually adapt to change? Personally, I think it's better to have a place dedicated to the improvement of the boards overall (that isn't game specific) rather then cluttering up the game specific boards with it and having all those requests spread about and harder to find. |
| #43lynadianyaAug 28, 2009 8:58:41 | I have not ever used any of the other boards. Those boards have their own communities and their own likes/dislikes. They are different games with different demographics of players. The opinions of those in the D&D forum are best placed in the D&D forum where the readers of the D&D forum can read them and critique them back if they feel they are unwarranted. Hiding valid concerns and questions in these group posting places means that they aren't being widely discussed. Perhaps the posts should be placed in a specific place on the forums (such as Community Business, of which this is very much a part) and when a post on these issues is made outside of the Community Business forum it will be moved over here. That way, we aren't sullying the other boards with our protests. Before this change, I could come to the forums, click the subforum I wanted to read, read the new posts, click out and go to another subforum, read the new posts there. Each of these forums were speaking about a specific aspect of the game, Character Optimization, Homebrew rules, Rules and Errata. All of the posts, all of the information that people wanted to disseminate to others was right there in the list. Now, instead of finding all the posts about character optimization in the Character Optimization forum, you'll have to seek out the groups that players have fractured into so that you can find out their ideas, then you have to go hunting down wikis and blogs by people so that you can get their opinion on something. It has just made the community into little tiny islands instead of one big group of people speaking about the same subject. Oh, and since I can't see the threads that I am replying to, I can't tell if someone has replied since me. Hopefully, it makes sense. |
| #44kratchAug 28, 2009 11:40:44 | The bulk of the complaints and suggestions (all that I've seen) are board wide (such as the right side recent topics and popular topics). Pretending that your complaints are only specific to the boards you attend is rather nieve in fact, but in the event that you truely believe it to be so, there was already a thread started by a community lead named webster, here. And pretending that they are attempting to "hide" the community HQ because you can't be bothered to look at the new features is rather stuborn and closed minded. Heaven forbid you should look in the group section and see the very first group at the top of the list. Just because you are unwilling to even consider adapting to the new envirounement does not in any way suggest that wizards does not wish to improve on what they currently have (such as the original poster suggests) or that they are attempting to deny you the opportunity to have your say (as Lyn suggests). You'll excuse me if this comes off hostile and abbrassive, but it really bothers me how selfish some people are. The sence of entitlement people feel about free content. And the hostile resistance to change many people demonstrait. Providing feedback, suggestions and complaints is one thing, but being aggressive and posting things like "they won't do anything about our complaints" despite this new community having a place specifically for feedback, just isn't helpful, in any manner. |
| #45drnickAug 28, 2009 13:47:47 | So it looks like the OP was wrong. The sidebar is already gone and it's only been up a day. Guess Wizard's isn't going to ignore you. |
| #46Titanium_DragonAug 28, 2009 16:02:53 | I have to agree that the new forums are actively MUCH worse than the older ones. Didn't they fire everyone who thought Gleemax was a good idea? Who thought this was a good idea? People who think twitter is OMG the greatest thing ever? Seriously, these are terrible. The thread formatting is very poor and looks bad, as does the front page. Rather than having each forum have its own line, with its own little mini-description, which makes things MUCH easier to navigate, instead everything is lumped up on one messed-up line. |
| #47zombie_babiesAug 28, 2009 16:07:39 | Didn't you hear? Cluttered is the new streamlined. |
| #48Titanium_DragonAug 28, 2009 16:31:03 |
Hopefully, for whoever thought this was a good idea, unemployed will be the new employed. Seriously, the purpose of having a forum is having a forum. The worst part of this new setup is the actual forum part. The rest of it is okay, but the forums are much less legible than they were previously. 1) The paragraphs are spaced too far apart; they should be .5 lines rather than 1.5 lines apart. 2) Alternating posts should have different backgrounds, as that makes it much easier to tell where one post ends and the next begins. 3) This much white looks bad. Off-white is much better than white. 4) The forums themselves are much more difficult to navigate as, rather than having each forum broken out into its own line, with a little description of it, instead they're all in a huge messy lump, which: a) Makes it more difficult to find the forum you want to post on. b) Makes it easier to accidentally click on the wrong forum. c) Causes the forums to actually move around slightly; sometimes "Open Discussion" in the Community section is all on one line, and sometimes it is on two separate lines. d) Is all but unnavigable for a new user, who has no idea whatsoever where they are supposed to go to post about certain things, and will have a very difficult time finding the proper forum. |
| #49delugeiaAug 28, 2009 16:43:30 | I, for one, am really happy with the new Community site. It certainly has a few things to be worked out, but all in all I think it's great. There are lots of cool new services, the wiki is a long time coming, groups are great, etc. Once everything is settled and all the tweaks are made, I think most people will be satisfied. And many of the others are the type that will simply never be satisfied. C'est la vie. I just wish they would disable the extra (BR /) tags after every friggen line. But just to be clear, I don't believe this is a WotC creation. It appears, to me at least, that this is a service agreement that they've made with a company called ONEsite. If you peek at the source code behind the pages, there's many a reference to them. www.ONEsite.comEnjoy! |
| #50Titanium_DragonAug 28, 2009 17:06:36 | This is the best designed webpage on the internet. I'd never hire a company with a homepage as poorly designed as Onesite's. At least, not to design my website. |
| #51dariusAug 28, 2009 17:22:54 | I'll give it a chance.
It seems to load faster at least. |
| #52kratchAug 28, 2009 17:45:32 |
To be fair, the old boards did this same thing too (if you ever scrolled down to the 4E errata you'd have seen it), the only difference is the top level thread. Where here the top level thread contains community, fundamentals, etc, the old one only used those as headers and had the (what are now) subthreads as the top level. Now, if you click on DnD fundamentals, it will space all the sub threads appart as it used to be on the old boards (order is off though). I will agree that there is a fair bit of improvement needed in the board navigation (possibly some custimization ability so one can organize the order the threads display in... if thats possible), but your complaint (which I have seen an awful lot of elsewhere as well) has always been there, just not as up-front as it is now. I think the biggest things they need to improve now (since they've fixed the sidebar issue) is the colouring (it's still painful to read for any length of time), subscription navigation (there really isn't much point to subscribing under it's current incarnation) and some kind of [sblock] equivilant (which may already exist in HTML, I don't know). As they have already demonstrated a willingness to listen and adapt, the OP was clearly wrong and I will continue to look forward to seeing what further changes they make. |
| #53tiwaztyrsfistAug 28, 2009 17:56:00 | Well, I see they already got rid of the Two Right Hand side hot link bars that were borking the style and page layout, so that's one HUGE possitive step in my book!
Go, go WotC! Now see if you can clip out the extra line breaks when I hit enter. I want to control my spacing.
It's getting better. |
| #54dougirwin13Aug 28, 2009 18:12:32 | Site admin has royally screwed over my D&D forums experience With the volume of posts on this site I need some way to immediately tell which posts are new. And I need a "mark read" button. And wants... I want things back to sorted oldest first and a "go to newest post" back in thread list. But wants I can live without... For a while anyway. Not happy Jan |
| #55trappedsliderAug 28, 2009 20:07:30 |
too much white *eye roll smily here* |
| #56BelorinAug 28, 2009 21:05:12 | They have also seems they have gotten rid of the overhanging text on the right-hand side of the text window.

| #57saurus33Aug 29, 2009 6:27:05 | I just find it funny that they couldn't get goddamn sblocks to work with 6-8 weeks to work on it.
This is the company that made the site, btw. A good quote: (From their site)
Online communities are organic. Not just the technology to evolve, but the promotion, content, advertising, and business must change and adapt as well. Our success with our clients has been dependent on creating collaborative, long-term relationships. We have a complete development and design team that works with our clients, through a dedicated Project Manager, to get our customer's communities launched. We work with our clients on best practices we have learned, share our experience, and work collaboratively to leverage their resources and our technology to create truly unique destinations.
Methinks perhaps this site was designed to be as much of an advertising tool as it was a functional community. It would explain the massive sidebars they had originally:
"Why do you have such big sidebars, grandma?" "All the better to spam you with, my dear." |
| #58maussAug 29, 2009 7:07:46 | Methinks perhaps this site was designed to be as much of an advertising tool as it was a functional community.: This is very true. However, at least the advertising aspect doesn't get in the way of actually being a useful and meaningful tool for the users. At least now that they got rid of the sidebar.

| #60ShadowsireAug 29, 2009 9:13:01 |
Now, I don't share the OP's pessimism that Wizards will ignore all of these very significant issues. But they'd better get on it soon, or he's right; it's just not worth using forums as bad as these. |
| #61oldgamer75Aug 29, 2009 9:50:02 | Hmmm. More initial angst than I expected. But it's still early (day 3, I think?). It will get better. Or at least different. |
| #62lokiareAug 29, 2009 15:59:00 | That depends on how well they take feedback. If they do it like they did with the various class 'playtest's they did, then we are in trouble. What they really should have done was taken the original forum and designed another forum around the way that one worked, adding in the functionality of wiki's, chat, photos videos, blogs, people, featured, profiles, and whatever else they wanted to do. |
| #63crimson_lancerAug 30, 2009 9:59:35 |
I dunno, how about when they removed the stupid Newest Topics Sidebar like everyone asked? Wizards may screw up a lot when it comes to digital stuff, but when the majority all complain on their doorstep that they have X and Y problem, then they'd have to be a monopoly to ignore it (like Microsoft, which they are not). |
| #64whitebaronAug 30, 2009 12:32:11 | oh, well, wotc always listens. it is just that they rarely answer, and deal with issues only if there's either while this is quite a turnoff, it's also a common business practice for those companies who are close to having a monopoly on some stuff. (as wizards has with magic or d&d) |
| #65kyros_tachyusAug 30, 2009 13:48:20 | Give it a few days or a week or two. It is still in BETA. Stuff will change. |
| #66trappedsliderAug 30, 2009 14:47:26 | What they really should have done was taken the original forum and designed another forum around the way that one worked, adding in the functionality of wiki's, chat, photos videos, blogs, people, featured, profiles, and whatever else they wanted to do. They tired that...it was called gleemax.... |
| #67lokiareAug 30, 2009 20:14:59 | What they really should have done was taken the original forum and designed another forum around the way that one worked, adding in the functionality of wiki's, chat, photos videos, blogs, people, featured, profiles, and whatever else they wanted to do. Well I assumed they would use the DESIGN of the old forums, not actually take the old forums and mangle them. That also assumes they follow good design and programming practices which doesn't appear to the be the case with most of their projects. I don't care how good of an idea you have, if you implement it without following good project design and practices you can screw up anything. |

| #69gideonpepysAug 31, 2009 5:33:12 | I have to keep reminding myself that this is a BETA test, but the fact is that it has completely ruined my enjoyment of these boards. I used to use the character optimization forums regularly, as a means to help my players sift through the overhwhelming amount of choice presented to characters at most levels. Now those guides (and the work that went into them) have been wrecked. I hope this damage isn't permanant, but I have nasty feeling that it is. I don't like the crisp, clean feeling here either. People have said, 'but Google has a white background, too'. But this isn't Google, its the forum of a medieval fantasy game. The look is all wrong. This change in the way our community works smacks of the same arrogance as the withdrawal of pdfs. Wizards should really learn to value their customers more. |

No, Gleemax! took the old boards and tried to add junk to them that was not needed. I know they changed the colors around and move a few things around, but basically it was the same back-end to the boards. Now if they had put a poll up that asked what features people wanted to keep and then made sure those features worked in the new community pages then that would have been fine, but they didn't. They slapped up the default community page in a week made sure all the [sarcasm]cool new feature[/sarcasm] that had nothing to do with the forum worked and then were overly optimistic about how we would react when we pretty much come here to post on the forums. Now there are a few things that are likable about the site. Like the Wiki's if they ever get them to work properly, and the friend and blog stuff, but the forums just really suck at this point.
You can stop reminding yourself this is a beta because while they tacked that word onto the community name and keep calliing it a beta, its not. A beta is something that is complete minus a few bugs. This site is no where near complete and has so many bugs its barely usable. If you want a name for it we could call it pre-alpha. [sarcasm]Besides I enjoy the white. Then again I enjoy spooning hot bacon grease into my eyes as well, but to each their own.[/sarcasm] |
