| #1ValenorMar 27, 2011 1:04:14 | I visit the D&D website in a daily basis, as a fan I don't want to miss the news and usually buy most D&D related products. But having that Pop-up EVERY time I visit the D&D site really gets old pretty soon. I would place that pop-up next to a telemarketer call or unsolicited mail/email category. Sure, it was exciting to see the new product/event I may have missed, err.. no, not really, if I'm visiting this often I would not miss it. Anyone else feels the same? |
| #2Seeker95Mar 27, 2011 7:19:23 | Firefox on XP. I haven't seen a pop-up in three or four years. Get a plug-in for your browser that blocks pop-ups. |

| #5morandir62Mar 27, 2011 13:05:30 | I visit the D&D website in a daily basis, as a fan I don't want to miss the news and usually buy most D&D related products. I agree and I visit several times a day now that content isn't being released on time. It wouldn't be bad if it was productive...which it isn't. The rotating flash is just as annoying. Old stale information is a constant even with this tool. Yes, I have pop-up blockers on. Yes, I use Firefox. |
| #6calronmoonflowerMar 27, 2011 14:34:18 | I haven't either seen a pop-up or a got a notification that a pop-up has been blocked visiting the WotC site sense they changed from the old site. I would suggest that you do a scan for Ad-Ware on your PC. www.download.com has shareware and free programs that can do this. |

| #8morandir62Mar 27, 2011 16:13:39 | Pop name = www.wizards.com/dnd/encounterspanel.aspx |

Really? that's odd. it is not a pop-up per se, it's like a javascript or some in-page pop-up (so it does not open another window). So regardless of pop-up blockers it will not get blocked, you may have an older version that doesn't support that sort of javascript ir in-page pop-ups though, lucky you. |
| #10lokiareMar 27, 2011 17:10:16 | I get it when I access the site from my phone, but not from my computer. Are you blocking cookies? or maybe you have a really old browser |
| #11ValenorMar 27, 2011 17:41:15 | I get it when I access the site from my phone, but not from my computer. Are you blocking cookies? or maybe you have a really old browser Hehe, nope, not an old browser at all, I keep up to date. And I get this same pop-up in my Win7 and XP (Firefox, IE). I also have pop-ups blocked |
| #12morandir62Mar 27, 2011 18:05:53 | This is a style of “pop up” more specifically known as a Modal Window. That is a child window that requires users to interact with it before they can return to operating the parent application, thus preventing the workflow on the application main window. Its funcuntion is meant to command user awareness:
Or to display emergency states:
WotC does uses this application wonderfully when showing preview images of the Art and Map Galleries. |
| #13calronmoonflowerMar 27, 2011 18:08:19 | @ Valenor: That thing that you posted the screen cap of is a hover ad, not a regular pop-up so pop-up blockers will not effect it. I don't know why you keep getting it but I suggest that you contact Customer Service and include the screen cap in your complaint. Otherwise they are not likely to know about it unless a VCL happens to pass it on. The first step that they usually tell people to do is to clear your internet history, cookies, and temporary internet files. |
| #14morandir62Mar 27, 2011 18:45:15 | The first step that they usually tell people to do is to clear your internet history, cookies, and temporary internet files. Note this will not fix the problem if you have the internet set to auto-refresh when visiting web pages. |
| #15calronmoonflowerMar 27, 2011 20:08:23 | The first step that they usually tell people to do is to clear your internet history, cookies, and temporary internet files. But you can say you already did it when contacting customer service speeding up the resolution of the problem. |
| #16TimmehMar 27, 2011 20:12:08 | I visit the D&D website in a daily basis, as a fan I don't want to miss the news and usually buy most D&D related products. This was likely on purpose (and I don't think you can fix it by anything you can do). For the record, I don't like the popup either; though it only really affects me if I'm going to the forums through the main pages (which usually happens if I haven't gotten any forum replies or posts in my PbP games). |
| #17ValenorMar 27, 2011 22:01:59 | The first step that they usually tell people to do is to clear your internet history, cookies, and temporary internet files. oh I already contacted them allright, all I got was the generic "Your email is important to us, yaddee yaddee yadda, we cannot do squat about it but we will make sure your email is sent to the appropriate party blah blah blah" I'm sure the box they forward it to is the recycle bin with auto-delete on receive rule. That is exactly why I'm posting this forum post, to try and get other people to voice out the same complaint, even though it would probably take hundreds of people to agree with this for WotC to even notice, let alone do anything about it. |
| #18morandir62Mar 28, 2011 0:00:29 | But you can say you already did it when contacting customer service speeding up the resolution of the problem. Do you really believe that? It took months of repeated calls, e-mails, and nasty CS Surveys just to get my profile fixed. As in Timmeh case it is only when he accesses the main page (rarely) does it affect him and even then he finds it annoying. This is the reason behind this OP. No, I have to agree with Valenor; the only way to get rid of this useless ad is get the community behind removing it. They have never served a no true purpose as all of them (this and past ones) have had other links prominently displayed and directly behind the pop up that led to the same information. |
| #19calronmoonflowerMar 28, 2011 1:01:29 | I do not know how representative of the standard service any of our experiences with customer service are. |
| #20TimmehMar 28, 2011 10:02:13 | Still. It might be good to tell them that their annoying advertisement isn't working, so that way they can fix it so it's actually advertising. |
| #21Janx_14Mar 28, 2011 10:05:17 | The pop up ads are so annoying on a slow connection, as it wont even let you close it till its done loading. |
| #22ValenorMar 28, 2011 10:30:14 | I do know that WotC doesn't sift through any of the forums including this one looking for complaints, so unless a VCL or someone else points them they will not likely even know of this thread. They do look at the forums, but seemingly only when it is something to their benefit/profit. If you're familiar with Forgotten Realms products, there was this awesome PDF by Brian R James in a forum post about "A Grand History of the Realms" dating all the Realms events chronologically referencing most Forgotten realms materials. WotC noticed that thread and file, made it a book (The Grand History of the Realms), gave Brian credit (and I guess some $$) for his work and requested the original PDF file be removed (I guess copyright violations and the obvious removal of it to sell more copies of their new book). If you pick up that book you'll read exactly what I typed above in the intro of the book. So I'm not implying it's a state secret. |
| #23morandir62Mar 28, 2011 14:52:57 | I do know that WotC doesn't sift through any of the forums including this one looking for complaints, so unless a VCL or someone else points them they will not likely even know of this thread. I have personally seen VCLs, FGs, ORCs, and WotCs answering post. So there is hope. Additionally not everyone has the problem of the add popping up every time that they visit the main page, so you are not likely to get more than a handful of people with the same problem. No one said it was a “Problem”, just annoying. |
