| #2zevoxJun 18, 2009 14:18:40 | All right, you begin in box 4, with an initiative roll of 20. Starting location and buffing/opening strategy, please. |
| #3post_ironicJun 18, 2009 14:26:47 | Start mounted on Aldous holding buffing scroll. Cast Barkskin from scroll, sharing with Aldous, then stow scroll. Cast Produce flame from memory and rise into the air, looking for my opponent. Ready to throw a flame on sight, for now. |
| #4zevoxJun 19, 2009 13:01:56 | You cast your spells and ascend to 40' in height, then fly out while readying in round 3. In that round you see a medium humanoid wearing a breastplate and bearing a bow round a building in the distance. He is out of your flame-tossing range, and takes a shot at you with his bow, but the arrow falls short. It is now the start of round 4, and you're up. Map is as so: Note: I noticed while checking out your animal companion's stats that you have a Mithril Chain Barding for him. Thing is, you badly underestimated its price. Barding for a large-size creature costs four times the cost of the armor for a medium humanoid, with only the cost of the masterwork quality not being multiplied. So for this, you'd have to spend 3,950 gp (1,100 normal Mithril Chain Shirt - 150 MW = 950, x4 = 3,800, + 150 MW = 3,950), well more than the 1,400 you list. So I'm afraid you don't have that. Pitlord & Spectators Only. Round 1 - Niwrad casts Barkskin from his scroll and stows it. - The Elan drinks a potion of shield of faith and moves out while drawing his bow. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 5/5 SLs; (2,2); Barkskin (long) - Aldous: 30/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 34/34 hp; AC 19; (59,54); Shield of Faith (ends 21) Round 2 - Niwrad casts Produce Flame and ascends on his mount to 40' height. - The Elan moves. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 4/5 SLs; (2,2,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 42) - Aldous: 30/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 34/34 hp; AC 19; (51,44); Shield of Faith (ends 21) Round 3 - Niwrad flies out, readying produce flame. - The Elan moves and spots Niwrad, so he puts an arrow in the air at the Druid's Bat, but misses. ([15]+6-4=17 vs AC 23.) Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 4/5 SLs; (2,2,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 42) - Aldous: 30/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 34/34 hp; AC 19; (51,44); Shield of Faith (ends 21) |
| #5post_ironicJun 19, 2009 13:27:59 | Ah, I suspect I only multiplied the cost of normal armor and added the mithril cost to it afterward. That makes the barding rather pricey, indeed. I'll have to adjust my sheet later. As for the fight, move downward behind the building to deny LOS, moving about 30' east of my current position as well. Cast SNA II over Chill Metal for a hippogriff (preferably summon it so that it is airborne and has LOS to my enemy when it appears). Once summonned, have it charge (diving if possible), followed by full attacks (no trips or grapples, Niwrad isn't that good of a shot if he has to help.) After summoning, Niwrad will spur Aldous upward and peek out to see whats going on, riding for cover if appropriate. The CoCo mapmaker is being uncooperative at the moment, but I'll post a map as soon as I can. In the meantime, I trust your mapping. |
| #6zevoxJun 20, 2009 18:47:24 | You fly down behind the building and start your casting. You do not see your foe in round 4. You summon your Hippogriff on the nearby rooftop - I don't remember if you're allowed to summon it in mid-air, and since you cannot see your foe, you've no way of knowing if any given position lets it dive/charge or not (plus the buildings and 3-D movement complicate that anyway). It does see something evidently, because it flies off immediately. You rise above your building in time to see it strike at - but miss - your foe, who is closer now. It is still your turn in round 5. Your mount has used 20' of movement ascending 10' straight up, but otherwise you yourself have not acted. What do you want to do? Pitlord & Spectators only. Round 4 - Niwrad rides east and dips to 20' in height while starting a SNA II spell. - The Elan moves south-west, heading for where he saw Niwrad move down. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (18,13,4); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 42) - Aldous: 30/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 34/34 hp; AC 19; (30,33); Shield of Faith (ends 21) Round 5 - Niwrad's summoning completes, and a Hippogriff appears on the building near him. It sees the Elan and moves to melee him, but misses. He rises 10' and ... (Attack [4]+8=12 vs AC 19.) |
| #7post_ironicJun 21, 2009 15:40:15 | The rooftop is an ideal choice given the uncertainty of summon locations, so that works for me. Hmmm... the Hippogriff missed. Can I get a spellcraft check to see any obvious spell effects? (I'm primarily looking for a Prot. Evil which would ruin my summon.) Have Aldous ascend another 10', Niwrad will ride for cover if necessary for now. Lets see how the Hippogriff does before taking unnecessary actions. |
| #8zevoxJun 21, 2009 20:44:04 | ...so, you're not going to take any actions at all this round? Er, okay, suit yourself... You rise further, but do nothing. There is one effect you can see and get a spellcraft check on, a shining aura of sorts, but you fail to tell what exactly it is (you have a +2 modifier, and it's DC 20+SL to determine an effect that is already up... yeah, not a surprise you failed that one). The monster glances briefly between you and the Hippogriff before stepping back and drawing and drinking a potion. This too produces a visible effect, a thin oblong aura of sorts, but you fail to identify that as well. Round 6, you let the Hippogriff strike, but its attacks seem to stop at this new aura. Actions for yourself? Pitlord & Spectators Only. Round 5 (continued) - Niwrad rises another 10', but does nothing more. He fails ([15]+2=17 vs DC21) a spellcraft check to ID Shield of Faith. - The Elan draws and drinks a potion of protection from evil. Niwrad fails ([14]+2=16 vs DC 21) a spellcraft check to ID it. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (18,13,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 42) - Aldous: 30/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) - Hippogrif: 31/31 hp; AC 15; (28,32) Elan: 34/34 hp; AC 19; (31,33); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25) Round 6 - Niwrad's Hippogriff strikes, but cannot bypass the protection from evil. |
| #9post_ironicJun 21, 2009 23:43:22 | Ok, crap. I'm pretty sure that there's a Prot Evil up, despite my nigh impossible Spellcraft check. I also have a pretty good idea what the monster is: its fast in a breastplate and has bow proficiency, which implies a speed buffed dwarf cleric, human fighter, aasimar wilder, elan barbarian, or half-orc psychic warrior. I don't want to engage any of these in melee. I can't really make a shot with the hippogriff in melee, Actually, only dismiss the hippogriff if its going to stay in melee. Otherwise, keep it between my enemy and myself after my attacks when possible and use it as soft cover during his potential attacks. Might as well make the best of things. I'd rather not waste resources/SLs for the time being, but we'll see what happens. |
| #10zevoxJun 21, 2009 23:55:44 | Well, on dismissing the Hippogriff, the SNA spell says it "It attacks your opponents to the best of its ability," and that you need to be able to communicate with it to get it to follow specific orders. So yes, it will stay in melee - though if the monster keeps 5' stepping, you shouldn't have trouble with that, since as long as he's out of the Hippogriff's reach, all you have to do is move to negate the soft cover from the Hippogriff and you'll take no penalties at all. I'd also note that it will be very difficult to keep him at the maximum range of your flames (120') without granting him soft cover from a building or losing line-of-sight. This is a big map, but not a very open one, except when both combatants are flying. |
| #11post_ironicJun 22, 2009 0:00:04 | Well, on dismissing the Hippogriff, the SNA spell says it "It attacks your opponents to the best of its ability," and that you need to be able to communicate with it to get it to follow specific orders. No problem here, just time actions appropriately. If the 5' steps stop, dismiss it. I'd also note that it will be very difficult to keep him at the maximum range of your flames (120') without granting him soft cover from a building or losing line-of-sight. This is a big map, but not a very open one, except when both combatants are flying. Given that my opponent is in the "town square" portion of the map, this doesn't present a problem yet. Just try to gain altitude and keep some distance. I know 3-D combat is a pain, but try and keep him in LOS and deny cover. Cover shouldn't be a problem just yet. |
| #12zevoxJun 22, 2009 11:05:35 | All right, round 6, you fly east, and ready a flame shot for when the monster 5' steps. She does so, and you toss your flame, striking her dead on (10 damage). She responds with a bow shot, which strikes Aldous. Round 7, you decide to act before your Hippogriff so you needn't ready, and toss a flame. This time, however, you miss. The Hippogriff continues to be ineffective. The monster steps back and fires another arrow, but it falls flat less than halfway between you (natural 1). Round 8, you toss a flame, but the shot goes far wide (natural 1). The Hippogriff continues to be useless. The monster responds with another step-shot, but is again ineffectual. Round 9, you toss your final flame, and finally hit again, though for minimum (5) damage. The Hippogriff vanishes. The monster shoots back, but again misses. You're up at the start of round 10, both your flames and the summon have run out. What next? Pitlord & Spectators only. Round 6 (continued) - Niwrad moves east and readies to throw his flame should the Elan 5' step away from the Hippogriff. - She does so, and the ready goes off, striking her ([9]+5=14 vs AC 13) for [6]+4=10 damage. She responds with a shot at his bat, hitting ([17]+6=23 vs AC 23) for [3]+3=6 damage. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 32) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) - Hippogrif: 31/31 hp; AC 15; (29,32) Elan: 24/34 hp; AC 19; (32,32); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25) Round 7 - Niwrad tosses a flame, but misses ([6]+5=11 vs AC 13). The Hippogriff tries to attack, but fails to penetrate protection from evil. - The Elan steps back and shoots an arrow, but misses ([1!]). Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 22) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) - Hippogrif: 31/31 hp; AC 15; (30,32) Elan: 24/34 hp; AC 19; (33,31); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25) Round 8 - Niwrad tosses a flame, but misses ([1!]). The Hippogriff tries to attack, but fails to penetrate protection from evil. - The Elan steps back and shoots an arrow, but misses ([16]+6=22 vs AC 23). Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 12) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) - Hippogrif: 31/31 hp; AC 15; (31,32) Elan: 24/34 hp; AC 19; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25) Round 9 - Niwrad tosses a flame, finally hitting ([16]+5=21 vs AC 13) for [1]+4=5 damage. The Hippogriff tries to attack, but fails to penetrate protection from evil. - The Elan steps back and shoots an arrow, but misses ([6]+6=12 vs AC 23). Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 19/34 hp; AC 19; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25) |
| #13post_ironicJun 22, 2009 11:51:13 | Ok. Descend to behind the nearest building and pearl back Produce Flame. Next round gain altitude and toss flames. Ride for cover when appropriate, and continue gaining altitude/moving toward max range. Heal Aldous with the wand if he takes any more hits. |
| #14zevoxJun 22, 2009 13:16:13 | Well, it will actually take two rounds before you can start throwing again - can't cast and toss in the same round, you see, since the casting just creates the flame. But on we go: Round 10, you duck behind the building and restore PF with your pearl. You do not see your foe. Round 11, you cast PF. Do you wish to move this round, or wait where you until you can toss your flames next round? |
| #15post_ironicJun 23, 2009 11:45:29 | Ascend and look for opponent. I suppose I should have included movement for the round of casting PF, too. Otherwise same plan: gain altitude, toss flames. See what happens from there. |
| #16zevoxJun 23, 2009 12:12:35 | You ascend 20' and see your foe to the west. You move east to increase the distance between you. She follows and fires, but misses. Round 12, you move away and toss a flame, striking her successfully for 6 damage. She seethes with fury and continues to follow you, firing but again misses badly. Round 13 you toss another flame, striking for 9 damage, and move away. You are again followed, but your foe cannot get a clear shot in one move this time. Round 14 you fire again for 9 damage and fly away. You are chased and shot at, but again to no effect. Round 15 you toss your last flame for this batch, hitting again for 9 damage, which drops your foe. Congratulations. Though to be honest, you had an easy foe for a flying Druid with Produce Flame - an Elan Barbarian. And the dice were kind, giving you mostly average or above-average rolls and your foe almost exclusively below-average - often badly below average - ones (just check her roll average in the dice roller: d20: 7 rolls, 6.9 average). Anyway, will have results posted soon for you. Pitlord & Spectators Only. Round 11 - Niwrad casts Produce Flame, rises, and moves west upon seeing the Elan. - The Elan follows and fires ([2]+6=8 vs AC 23) but misses. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 51) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 19/34 hp; AC 19; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25) Round 12 - Niwrad tosses a flame (attack [10]+5=15 vs AC 13) and hits for [2]+4=6 damage. His bat moves them away. - The Elan rages, follows, and shoots, but misses ([1!]). Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 41) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 21/42 hp; AC 17; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25), Rage (ends 19) Round 13 - Niwrad tosses a flame ([16]+5=21 vs AC 11) and hits for [5]+4=9 damage. He then moves to maximum range. - The Elan chases, but can't get a shot after only one move action this time. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 31) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 12/42 hp; AC 17; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25), Rage (ends 19) Round 14 - Niwrad tosses a flame (attack [9]+5=14 vs AC 11) and hits for [5]+4=9 damage. He flies away. - The Elan chases and fires, but misses ([5]+6=11 vs AC 23.) Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 21) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: 3/42 hp; AC 17; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25), Rage (ends 19) Round 15 - Niwrad tosses a final flame (attack [10]+5=15 vs AC 11) and hits for [5]+4=9 damage, ending this. Niwrad: 33/33 hp; AC 19; 2/5 SLs; (33,10,8); Barkskin (long), Produce Flame (ends 21) - Aldous: 24/30 hp; AC 23; (same as Niwrad); Barkskin (long) Elan: -6/42 hp; AC 17; (34,30); Shield of Faith (ends 21), Protection from Evil (ends 25), Rage (ends 19) |
| #17zevoxJun 23, 2009 12:17:30 | And rewards are up, both here and [post=18869242]in the battles thread[/post]. You being on fight 3 made those very easy to do. |
| #18post_ironicJun 23, 2009 12:21:02 | Thanks for the run, Zevox. I didn't want to waste too many resources on this fight, since one can never really tell in monster fights. The dice were reasonably kind to me, but very cruel to the monster. I (very briefly) considered going into melee with the monster if there wasn't a Prot Evil on it, flanking with the Hippogriff/gaining higher ground, etc. Man, am I glad I didn't do that. |
