| #1ErithmuApr 07, 2009 22:39:10 | Ok this is set up for dragon hunting campaign(s). As of now I think there are about 10ish people who would be interested in a dragon hunt. Deadline for Interest April 10 6pm PST/9pm EST (April 11 2am GMT) Rules are as follows: Rules: 3.5 - 4e will wait till rules for campaigns get sorted out ECL: 3 - Start a new character per the Gladius rules Cost: 5 credits OR Pitlord every week while you are questing, and I'll pay your 5 credits, you miss a week (for no reason) you still pay the credits ... but by then you should be able to afford it. This option is open to anyone who wants to apply Notes: -- There will be very little crafting time which might make things harder, but items will come as needed ... dragons tend to have lots of treasure :D If you are interested please make a post as follows: 1) Primary and secondary character choices. This means I want two options from you. You can list one, but that limits the ability to fit you in. --- Race and Class build at ECL 3 and planned direction for the character --- This is so that bases are covered for the campaign ex: Elf Ranger 3 going for Horizon Walker ex2: Elf rog1/Wiz2 going for arcane trickster If you need any RP requirements for prestige classes (Warmind/Assassin) list those as well Don't post the sheets yet into the character thread. 2) If I am paying your credits (and I will be keeping track) 3) If you are willing to Campaign Lord (DM) ... and have good standing with the CoCo state so. Realize that I hope to have two campaigns up and running, but I cant really run them both myself ... unless I stopped pitlording. If you don't want to run one, then don't post. I want to get everyone in a campaign ... but I make no promises. Please hold comments till all applications are posted (ie don't post till after Friday). |

| #42zevoxApr 17, 2009 12:25:34 | Er, post_ironic, you do get a size bonus from expansion. Not sure what you're talking about with something canceling it out. And Telin, grappling Dragons is very possible. Its how the group from King Uther's "The Liberation of Achos" campaign beat an early encounter with a Dragon when we were all level 3/4. The party Paladin, Solan, got an enlarge person spell cast on him, and grappled our Juvenile Black Dragon opponent while the rest of us struck at it from outside the grapple. Solan was nearly killed, but we'd have been in even worse shape had the Dragon been running free to strike at the party casters. Anyway, the main thing about Stunning Fist in our environment is that it really isn't particularly useful in the arena. It wears off before you can really take advantage of it, and anyone who isn't a straight wizard/sorcerer/psion/wilder generally has a good fortitude save to resist it anyway (and straight casters often won't let you get close enough to use it). Its more useful in a quest/campaign environment, though. But probably useless vs Dragons, since their only remotely weak save is reflex. Zevox |
| #43post_ironicApr 17, 2009 12:49:57 | Er, post_ironic, you do get a size bonus from expansion. Not sure what you're talking about with something canceling it out. You're absolutely right. For some reason I thought it was a bonus from relative size differences, but that must have been a houserule or something. That brings my total to +20 at 3rd level. That beats the juvenile and puts us within striking distance of the young adult. How to get +4 more? If only there were masterwork grappling tools! |
| #44ErithmuApr 17, 2009 12:56:14 | Grip of Iron ... Bulls Strength ... Heroism ... (makes mental notes for his dragons) |
| #45zevoxApr 17, 2009 13:04:30 | Heroism doesn't help in a grapple, 'Rith. Anyway, I've made my somewhat-reluctant/tentative character selection - [post=18360991]Rina Aylingal[/post], the Cleric of Tymora and Beshaba. Still not too pleased with her feats, but long-term, I think they're better off than the others I was thinking of. A pity she couldn't afford a CLW wand, but hopefully she'll be able to pick one up early in the campaign. I'll write up a background for her later. Zevox |
| #46TelinArthoApr 17, 2009 13:07:31 | Well - this is where it matters on whether the features of the Monk that you have are worth it. The fighter would give you 2 out of 3 of the bonus feats that you have with the monk and with armor spikes you'd have the same grapple damage (and with silver/cold iron spikes you can adjust for DR). Using fighter would give you an additional +1 BAB, 3 more hps. You'd lose a couple of points on Will and Reflex save and the Evasion though - so it is a trade off. And what I meant about grappling a dragon is that you pretty much have to specialize in grappling in order to have a decent shot - take that +20 at 3rd level. We'll be facing dragons in the CR7+ range right off the bat (I'm guessing), which puts him at a slight advantage (+20 vs +16 - though that goes down to +18 if he wants to flurry. At the same time, what if the dragon is a grappler specialist himself? Or he has a tattoo of expansion to match? Or gloves of titan's grip? As soon as the dragon even puts a little effort into grappling, the grappling specialist is in deep. If the dragon goes the other way - freedom of movement for instance - he suddenly can't really offer much. Anyway - this is just my opinion. I'm doubtful that Erithmu would stick in a grappling dragon - but it is always something on the back of my mind... |
| #82EluriaApr 19, 2009 15:51:42 | @Eluria: Yes you're right about grease; I'll swap that around. I know about the Alterself not resizing; I was actually planning on the "good bow" being small sized, and spending most of archery time as a mephit, but we'll see. I know necromancy is tempting - if I was straight wizard (and, my next coco actual character will probably be just that), I would go that route. I'm good to go Wednesday |
| #83post_ironicApr 19, 2009 20:38:08 | Quick question for those with more experience in psionics than myself: Is Bite of the Wolf worth it? By my reading, its an extra secondary attack, though no penalties are stated in the SRD description. Should I take it, or would something else be worthwhile? I'm having second thoughts... |
| #84ErithmuApr 19, 2009 20:42:03 | the better question might be ... do you really want to go full attack vs full attack w/ a dragon. In general there are not many people who take bite of the wolf as there are better options. for a monk/psi war grappler ... after you go Inertial Armor, Force Screen, and Expansion ... do you really need anything else? maybe vigor ... maybe one of the precogs, bite of the wolf is kinda down the list a ways unless you have a good way to use it. |
| #85zevoxApr 19, 2009 20:52:06 | It is an extra secondary attack, and as such, is at -5 attack, like all secondary natural attacks (unless you somehow acquired the Multiattack or Improved Multiattack feat, but your character lacks the prerequisites for those). As for whether its worth it, well, that all depends. How high level are you going as a Psychic Warrior? What's the main plan for this guy - just a large full attack sequence? I've never seen the power used in our environment, but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't useful. Just depends on whether it fits your plan for your build. Zevox |
| #86post_ironicApr 19, 2009 21:01:04 | The plan is to get 2 more levels in PsyWar (total: Monk2/Psywar 3) and then PrC into WarMind. The additional attack is nice, but there are other things out there worth considering. Since my PP total is so low, though, I thought it would also be something I wouldn't constantly be tempted to use except when it hits the fan. |
| #87sjiggieApr 19, 2009 21:13:33 | So I posted my Ranger/Psion [post=18377191]Elhorn Darkeyes[/post] I can play either but still a bit in doubt on which one to play |
| #88zevoxApr 19, 2009 21:15:44 | Low pp total is always an issue for Psychic Warriors, yeah (its the main reason I almost never use the class; not much point when it can hardly use one of its main class features) - though War Mind will help with that. Anyway, for such a low number of psychic warrior levels, Bite of the Wolf might not be a bad idea. Looking at other good powers, vigor likely isn't worth it, since you won't be able to augment it past 3 pp/15 hp. Defensive Precognition you won't be able to augment at all, so I definitely wouldn't bother with that. Offensive Precognition is much the same, though may be a decent choice. Inertial Armor isn't worth it, as you'll never get to the point where its duration is long enough to prebuff it effectively - you're better off with a fairly cheap dorje. If I recall, you wanted Grip of Iron, which isn't a bad choice. Expansion may be a nice one as well, as you'll have enough levels to augment it for a good duration, though I'd put that off as your 3rd and final power, and you may consider taking it as a War Mind instead, so that you can augment it further to expand to huge size eventually. Empty Mind is also popular, but you likely don't need it, given your good wisdom and monk levels. Other options I see: Dissipating Touch (hold the charge and deliver it with a normal attack = it effectively boosts your damage on one attack by 1d6 per pp spent, though here you run into the problem of you limited pp amount), Offensive Prescience (+2 damage for 3 minutes is nice even if you can't augment it), Skate (what's not to like about extra movement speed?), and Force Screen (though you have to consider whether you'd rather save money by having it as a known power or save power points by using it from a dorje). Overall, I'd say bite may be worth it, but you do have a lot of options to choose from, many of which I'd say are better. The duration on bite makes it ideal for taking as your first power, but the attack loss makes it difficult to hit with it early on, and still hardly ideal even at higher levels. Zevox |
| #89turansonApr 20, 2009 13:03:17 | [post=18344584]Azaghâl Broadbeam[/post] is ready for review. |
| #90TelinArthoApr 20, 2009 13:11:29 | As a melee character - I would certainly suggest having backup weapons that fall into other categories - light, piercing, bludgeoning. I know I hate having a character who suddenly is worth much less when fighting common undead or who is swallowed whole... since you have the spare cash anyway. Cold Iron and Silver are good too if you can manage it. Otherwise - I think he's solid. |
