| #1TelinArthoJun 11, 2009 10:37:29 | This is the Tavern of the Core Coliseum. Here, all Characters of Gladius meet to chat, drink, and sometimes even brawl. You can ask questions, talk to others, or write whatever you want as long as it does not violate the Code of Conduct. You can't really go wrong here. Newcomers who want to make a character should use the [post=5179911]Quickstart Guide[/post] or read the [post=6463399]Rules of Gladius[/post]. If you have a question, the Tavern is definitely the right place to go. Links to the old Taverns:

| #42LinkNJun 19, 2009 16:20:41 | Now, all that being said... This week, Sehanine's Stalkers will end their 4-week cycle. I'd like to give this questing thing another try, so I'd like to go on a quest with them as well. (Just to clarify some things about quests, though: if I decide to end Flames of Heaven's quest after this fight, no matter if I win or lose the fight, I'll wind up spending only one credit since the quest was only one fight/encounter, and Flames of Heaven will enter a normal coliseum battle at fight 2 of their cycle next week, right?) |
| #43TelinArthoJun 19, 2009 16:23:05 | Correct. If you die/abandon the quest during week 1 - you spent 1 credit, your questlord gained 2 and you'd return to the arena on week 2. |
| #82YitziJun 24, 2009 21:02:26 | Rosters and Credits are updated for last week now. If there's errors - let me know. I'm taking one and offering another, if needed I may be able to take another, but it shouldn't be counted on. |
| #83scruffymctoughyJun 25, 2009 15:04:32 | I'm running a pbp 4th edition PvP league where each player controls a team of five characters and they face off on three different maps. "4E: Small Arena," "3E: Cavern," and "Quest Maps: The Quartz Mines." Unfortunately, we're running into one issue, though. There's enough space for nine characters (A through I), and our game will have ten. Do you know if there's anyone who could add a "J" character option to those three maps? Or any other suggestions? This would really help out a lot of people. Anyway, thanks for reading this, and if you can help at all, thanks very much! |
| #84TelinArthoJun 25, 2009 15:12:53 | I'll pass the request on to the current maintainer of the Mapper. I'll let you know what he says when he gets back to me. |
| #122whitebaronJul 05, 2009 15:17:18 | Many, many folks in my local RPGA circle did exactly that--and why would you retrain it? Unnerfed, it's the best fighter encounter power in the book, at any level. if you want to play a striker and onetrick pony, maybe yes. ![]() however, optimising your character for a single power in any given encounter, when you have 4 encounter powers, seems a bit odd to me. |
| #123MindWandererBJul 05, 2009 19:27:38 | if you want to play a striker and onetrick pony, maybe yes. Having seen it in action extensively, it's hard to argue that it isn't worth it. Getting as many as 4 rounds' worth of basic attack damage in in a single round is incredibly powerful. Even in PvM it's fantasic for taking down the nastiest baddie in one shot; in PvP it's even worse because of healing. Basically, the character is a slighty less-optimized defender, and a much better striker (better than real strikers for a short fight). And I've seen a number of avengers and warlords multiclass to pick it up despite the stats being cross-function for them (and rangers and rogues, of course, for whom there's no real cost). The same was true for Righteous Rage of Tempus, which fortunately isn't on our list of sources. It was very rare for me to see a divine character that used a weapon and didn't have RRoT. Hitting 50 damage at level 3 (vicious executioner's axe or fullblade) in one shot was common. |

I'm glad that this power isn't our list. (Though I would have immediately taken the power for Mephodyn if it were allowed.) I think that part of the problem is that 4E has made the game almost entirely about damage (no save-or-dies, debuffs work differently); sure, you're not as good a defender if you can't keep monsters off squishier allies, but killing enemies tends to accomplish pretty much the same thing. |
| #125TelinArthoJul 06, 2009 9:15:54 | Just as a quick reminder, I am going to be on vacation from July 10th through the 19th. I don't anticipate having any sort of internet access nor computer, but even if I do, I will probably deliberately ignore it. LinkN is going to run pairings that week for me. In preparation for this event, he is also going to do pairings this week. As such - PMs that would normally go to me (character activations, pitlording changes, fight extensions) should be also sent to LinkN (please do still send them to me). I will be around during the pairings time to help ensure things go smoothly - but be prepared for a possible errors. |
| #162LinkNJul 14, 2009 1:27:57 | After some thought and some pointed observations concerning my characters, I think I'll refurbish them to make them a bit more optimized and generally streamline them. I can do so before Wednesday and still be eligible, right? Or do I have to get another confirmation in? Your characters are already entered into my roster. Since you haven't been in any fights yet, you can edit the character sheets as much as you like without a problem. (Once you have been in a fight, you'll have to follow some extra rules for what changes are allowed.) You don't need to worry about notifying anyone, although note that any changes made after pairings are posted will potentially disqualify you. |
| #163tunagolemJul 14, 2009 3:36:54 | Is it just me, or is the Bladling unbalenced? BTW, it was nice reading all of the quests although I didn't have time for PCs of my own, but now I'll have to stop for a full year (military reasons). |
| #164yaouJul 14, 2009 11:04:09 | Sorry to hear that you'll be leaving us, Tuna :< Characters have been updated; fixed a couple minor errors, simplified some rules text, and overall cleaned them up. Thanks to a couple people who made suggestions as to ways I could make them a bit more optimized :D I think I may have made a mistake in Mandi's attack section (beneath AC/Defenses) regarding the feat bonus, but other than that I think I'm all set! |
| #165LinkNJul 14, 2009 12:51:01 | Three main issues about your character sheets, then I think you're set: First off, there's kind of an "unwritten rule" with CoCo to only include parts of powers that are relevant. For example, Mandi's Shielding Smite ability's Effect line should probably read "Effect: Until the end of Mandi's next turn, one ally within 5 squares of her gains a +2 power bonus to AC". Essentially, just put in the number for the power, not how you got to that number. This also applies to feats; don't give us the prerequisites, just the actual effect. Second, make sure that you're giving us the correct bonus to attack and damage rolls, mainly those on Mandi's sheet. Your attacks should be at a +6 bonus, not +3 (add in the proficiency bonus to your powers, basically), and the damage rolls should be 1d8+4 (3 for Str or Cha, 1 for the feat). Pitlords should check your math on your character sheets, but sometimes little things slip through if they don't notice something, and even if your pitlord notices the mistake, always remembering to add in the correct value causes headaches. Finally, for Mandi's Weapon Focus feat, make sure you list what weapon type you chose. I suggest re-writing it as Weapon Focus (Light Blades), or something similar. Anyway, beyond those issues, you're set! Welcome to the Core Coliseum. |
| #166yaouJul 14, 2009 19:01:20 | Thanks, Link, think I addressed most of those new concerns! |
| #167XaviYagoJul 16, 2009 21:54:45 | I uploaded the Small Arena map into a MapTools campaign file and included vision blocking, etc. If anyone here uses MapTools and would like to mess around in the arena with some informal battles, then just hit me up via PM and I'll start up a server. Take care! |
| #168yaouJul 17, 2009 17:27:54 | Second team up! This time with more of an eye towards competitive play! EDIT: Oh my... I swear I didn't mean for them to come out like Archibald's Anathema <.< |
| #169sjiggieJul 19, 2009 16:38:12 | Question: Are secondary attacks optional or do you have to make them. I'm in a fight where a wizard cast an acid arrow at my cleric while one his allies is adjacent to my cleric does his allies suffer from the secondary attack or not? Thanks Sjiggie |
| #170LinkNJul 19, 2009 17:06:30 | Question: Are secondary attacks optional or do you have to make them. For Acid Arrow, I believe the secondary attack is mandatory. I don't think this is the case for every power, however, so it's kind of a case-by-case basis kind of thing. |
| #171sjiggieJul 19, 2009 17:11:14 | okay thanks so the acid arrow also hits the ally (if he hits the reflex defense of the ally) |
| #172XaviYagoJul 19, 2009 21:05:26 | Question: Are secondary attacks optional or do you have to make them. As LinkN said, I think it depends on the attack. An interesting note - the R&D person that designed the Sorcerer Chaos Bolt power wrote on the Striker forms that he envisioned sorcerers opting NOT to take the secondary attack or else targeting empty squares in lieu of targetting her allies with the secondary attacks from that power. That seems kind of cheap (to me), but if that's how the R&D team planned it, I guess it's within the framework? |
| #173MindWandererBJul 19, 2009 22:05:40 | I think that unless it says "you may make a secondary attack," it's mandatory. However, some powers with secondary attacks (like Chaos Bolt) that target individuals, not "adjacent creatures," are also optional. |
| #174TelinArthoJul 20, 2009 9:38:51 | Hi guys. I'm back. I've got a lot of catching up to do (only 11 unread PMs though - that's fairly low... though I did check a few during the week...). Hope everyone is doing well. |
| #202TelinArthoJul 31, 2009 14:41:02 | It is with great sadness that I am making this post. The Core Coliseum started so many years ago and while I wasn't the first here by a long shot - I was certainly here during its prime. I remember pitlording 5+ fights per week in order to accommodate the huge roster we had - in some weeks topping [post=8324906]50 fights[/post] across all of the leagues. 3.5e is not dead. I still see it played plenty on the Real Adventures board, on the PbP Haven, on other forums and in my own home games. However, it seems, the popularity of the 3.5e CoCo has waned. I am not done with it - but it seems that no one else is willing to play with such a truncated participation - and so I am left without opponents to fight. Luckily, the 4e CoCo is doing well enough. We are getting more and more players coming in and while some are only here temporarily - the ones who have stayed are welcome additions to the community. I hope that with the upcoming UnCon our numbers will swell even further. In light of this, I am forced to "close" the 3.5e arena for now. I will welcome opponents for one shot fights with any of my creations, and I will keep the Battles, Characters and Rules up for quite some time. Any fights that want to be run in the previous edition need only be posted in the Tavern or via PM. Results can be posted to the Battles thread. If anyone wants to run a 3.5e style fight in a separate thread, send me a PM so I don't unceremoniously have it removed for being off topic. Like I said, this is something that makes me quite sad. I wasn't done with 3.5e CoCo - I'm not sure that I ever will be. If anyone wants a fight with any of my characters, please feel free to PM me and I'll try to set something up. On another note I'm finding that I have pretty much no desire to play a 4e team in the new CoCo. I enjoy 4e in its own right - I look forward to the tabletop game I am in and the two PbP games I am in, but the 4e CoCo just hasn't satisfied me yet. Since we did have the 3.5e arena though, it didn't bother me too much, since running 4e pairings is so easy. That said, without 3.5e in the mix, it leaves me in a precarious position. Am I ready to close the book that was my life here? Would it be better for the community to have a GM who is more invested in the current game? There's no question that I will forever be an advocate for the forum, but if I am not actively playing, how am I to keep up on the topics that might need to be addressed? As such, after only 8 months as GM, I am starting to question if maybe there is someone better for the position. I will not step down, hopefully, until a reliable candidate is found and enough knowledge transfer has occured - so hopefully there will be no "downtime" for the transition. I intend to run the Grand Melee of the UnCon as well - so I'm certainly not going to step down until then at the very least. In closing I would like to thank many of the people who made my life here in the CoCo so enjoyable, but I don't know that I could break down a list that wouldn't include everyone that I interacted with at one point or another. |
| #242yaouAug 27, 2009 18:48:45 | This is... strange, to say the least. Hopefully we'll bounce back. Although, I do miss my old theme :< Also, I joined the Core Coliseum Group :D EDIT: Oh. Dear. GOD. My teams have been butchered. Specifically, A Midsummer Night's Dream and the Forrel Sisters. Looks like everything below a certain point got cut off from both of them. The sisters aren't much of a loss, since I was going to remake them anyway, but... My god, AMND was still gonna be one of my active teams. At least I keep all of my teams on file, but still, this makes me really mad...

| #243MindWandererBAug 27, 2009 19:34:56 | Wow. This is truly horrible. You need to know HTML to do anything fancy--and is there any way to do an sblock, or anything like it? We may need to completely change the way we do fights. Using a Core Coliseum group wiki might be a way to go. Telin, you should investigate that. And that's ignoring the lack of page-selection or go-to-first-unread-post options. You can't have just one post on a browser page. And they ruined all usernames that have capital letters in the middle! |
| #244yaouAug 27, 2009 20:05:05 | Huh. Apparently if you make at least 1 new post (using the new forumware), you can jump to the last post since YOU posted. A bit more functional, but still horrid. |
| #245MindWandererBAug 27, 2009 20:32:32 |
And it displays it in patchy blocks of magenta. That can't be right. |
| #246yaouAug 27, 2009 21:09:55 | Two questions: Are we going to migrate the CoCo's important threads to the CoCo group's personal forums? If so, what will be the fate of this sub-forum? |
| #247ErithmuAug 27, 2009 21:24:02 | I'm not sure we know ... I think this was more than any of us were expecting in terms of change. Think about it ... We need to move (All to the coco wiki probably): - Rules - Characters - Fights Then we need to figure out - Formating for Char sheets - Formating of Fights (I think Img tags still work so the mapmaker should still work) And on top of that survive the panic of multiple 'what the deal' comments. I think it could work, but there are some things that I hope get fixed in the movement from 'beta phase' to final phase. In general I think that people will grow to like it, but right now there is a lack of confidence, mostly out of fear of the new. I think the other part is that Wizards took something that we knew, created, and built over the course of 10 years and basically took it away (or people will feel like that). I'm guessing 1 week minium to migrate but I think fights will pick up once we get char sheets and fight threads over there. Just got figure out how. I'm guessing Telin will log into tonight or tomorrow, have his fit (like the rest of us), then look at it over the weekend. But that is just my guess.

| #248hogarthAug 27, 2009 21:29:56 | I also like how they got rid of my saved messages and my pesky .sig file. So much tidier now. Kudos, web site guys!
On a lighter note, Mindwandererb (sic) lost one or more capital letters and Hogarth (sic) gained one. ;) |
| #249myt3m0w53Aug 27, 2009 23:14:06 | can I just say YUCK!!! this looks horrid... thers too much distraction on the right side of the page and maybe we should wait till this thing is not in beta anymore... or it gets ot's older functionality back!! or should we all learn HTML or is it XML?? who knows anymore.. is it me or does it look like Facebook meets MySpace? well now they have an excuse for not doing the rest of the software suite!! |
| #250salrantolAug 28, 2009 5:20:44 | On the upside, what they removed in functionality, they more than replaced with extraneous distratcions! |
| #251TelinArthoAug 28, 2009 8:05:28 | This was a huge change and while I'm sure you can imagine my disappointment, I'm not giving up on it - yet. Frankly, if they can't restore the BBCode and the missing text in posts - I'm in no mood to do all of the work when I was already planning to step down. As for whether we'd be moving to a group - that is not a question: If we stay we will be moving to a group. Simple reason: they are closing down the PbP forums in favor of groups. I'm still waiting to hear what's going on with the BBCode - will update when I know more. I'll create a tavern in the group in a little while - in the mean time, just stay here for now. |
