Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

News and Whatnot

New Rulings - Courtroom

The Council Decisions/Revelations

Current Topics

  • Courtroom - Sauro wishes an elder decision on using an intelligent cohort as a mount. [and what tricks/training it requires]
  • Council - There is a discussion on how quickly you should be able to aquire ethereal equipment.
  • Courtroom- The rules for Ride and Handle Animal are under discussion.

Idle Conversations

These are topics that have died down but had nothing come of them. Personally? I blame the terrorists.
  • Council - Mechanics of the "Awaken" spell is currently being discussed in the council.
  • Courtroom- Good grief, we're talking about the Bag of Tricks again. Sooner or later Lelenia will level enough that we can put these discussions behind us. :-)
  • Council- Delay rules are still being discussed.

Pairings done. No SoE actually--if needed, we had 4 pitlords to spare. Funny how that works.

@MagicChoco and JackSnape: sorry, I totally forgot about your rewards.. Next time feel free to bug me before the pairings.

Ironically, yes, I did miss the crafting (please remember to put FULL ACTIVITY in caps so I don't miss it) but it didn't matter because Uranedal is in prison anyway.

Well, I can't do anything about it. I fixed the violation and PM'd Yitzi twice but he didn't fix his post.

if anyone else has something he wants to be added... just ask.

Nice change

Just wondering.. would it be very complicated to build some sort of online char sheet? We could store them in a database and it could be easier to edit them rather than in forums.

If you don't get any resolution to this by next week, I'll make sure to remove the violation after confirming it is fixed.

In the future, if the person who posted the violation doesn't mark it as fixed in a timely manner (ie - before you would go to red) - send me a PM.

@Nabuchadnezzar - tactics for Eranor have been sent.

A small issue with rewards. You miss Gimrel bonus for Eranor's ally.

Monster for Thiel's Loyal Retainers:
2 Medium non-biped, non-quadrupeds without wings.

Sorry to be so vague, but the body shape is somewhat unique.

Ummm ... can we get a second opinion because we don't see anything that matches this description that we don't have knowledge for.

We assume that you are looking at the yuan-ti abominations ... but they are large. And if your looking at the HF yuan-ti halfbloods ... they have wings.

Heh- this is ironic since I just claimed that everyone knew the hide rules.

Ooh! Ooh! I still don't know why anyone would use the Snipe action (which allows you to hide at -20 penalty) instead of just hiding while attacking (which gives you a -20 penalty).

Yep, you should gain 75 more xp and gp ;)
Now I'm, back and will re-edit the fight up to what it was in the first draft ;)

I have one last request:
next time roll better dice, please :D

Gimrel
d20: 21 rolls, 9.3 average (including some useless 20s on spot checks)
d6: 2 rolls, 2 average

Eranor
d20: 26 rolls, 12.6 average

ehr... I said that you was *a bit* unlucky :D

EDIT: Fixed... now the fight looks like it was in the first spot (earnings fixed), and rolls are ok and corrected.
Remember for next runs: Nd2-N ;)

Statistics:
Gimrel
d4: 1 rolls, 2 average
d20: 11 rolls, 9 average
d21: 1 rolls, 20 average
d6: 1 rolls, 3 average
d100: 3 rolls, 67.3 average
Eranor
d3: 1 rolls, 2 average
d20: 20 rolls, 12.2 average
d100: 11 rolls, 50.8 average
d8: 5 rolls, 4.2 average

Ooh! Ooh! I still don't know why anyone would use the Snipe action (which allows you to hide at -20 penalty) instead of just hiding while attacking (which gives you a -20 penalty).

I think the reason is hiding while attacking only works if you have Hide in Plain sight or similar. Because of the "If people are observing you, even casually, you can’t hide." clause. Attention (and thus observation) is shifted to you because of the attack. Hide and Plain sight removes that problem and the Snipe action has special rules associated with it which override that statement.

But yeah, the hide rules aren't the simplest things in the world, although the FAQ helps some on that front, although not completely.

Regarding Faerie Fire vs Concealment

The concealment is due to a smoke cloud. Not a darkness effect, or individual targeted spell. So you can pick the square, but there is still solid smoke in the way. I don't see why a person in a cloud would lose concealment just because they have faerie fire.

Ie: I don't think smoke/cloud/fog is a 'similar effect' to the ones listed.

Regarding the Grapple check ... I reset the chain of tactics effect because Elrick got back up on his bat. That may change here on rerun.

Edit/addition: The other part is he didn't have LoS till that round so the range where he fired the TKM was closer than the edge.

if valen has faerie fire on him - he might have concealment (20%) but he still can't hide regardless since hide IS on the similar effects line (it's weaker then invisibility after all).

I´ve thought long and hard about useful tactics for 3 Halfcelestial Cloakers vs Flutterthought, but I dont find any way they can win this one.

They cant find her, it is nearly impossible for them to deal damage to her through the DR and their Shadow shift abilities dont work in normal light.

Does anyone have any objection if I surrender on behalf of those monsters?

*sigh*

Ok ... started rerunning the Elrick/Valen fight and I've hit a quandary of what Elrick should do. On top of that I have run out of time right before my class.

Every Option I look at either leaves Elrick staring down a full attack or getting bull rushed right back off his bat. None of the options sit nicely with me.

Well just thought of one ... I'll play with it when I get out of class. Ignore some of the new rolls in the roller for the time being.

Gwerdan vs The Dark One is up [post=15962087]here[/post]

distance 100 ft.
gwerdan runs away (300ft)
dark one single move follows (fly-60) and can actually cast something through spectral hand with a range of 130 ft while he is officially 160 ft away. ....

also he casts magic missile while being 220 ft away... (range: 180)

so basically: gwerdan is often further away than TDO could cast anything. - this could allow him to refresh vigor more often and maybe delay until TDO has to come back to earth.

Hmm... You have a point. I may actually need to track the movement better on this one. I'll take another look at it. In the long run, I have a feeling that 50% action curse is going still do you in. The other issue is The Dark one has two magic missile wands to your single dorje of Vigor, I believe.

if i reach round 57, there's no difference with that. in a grapple, he's like dead in 2-3 rounds.

Gwerdan vs The Dark One has been edited. I kept much better track of positions this time. Turns out long stretches of no actions still caused Gwerdan to have problems. Plus being unable to run on rounds when he activated the dorje also caused issues.

Although I'm impressed at how small the plains becomes when you're moving 240' a round.

Also through an odd circumstance of pacing, both Gwerdan and TDO used 1 less charge from their wands/dorjes. Go figure.

Given Erithmu's time (and sanity) I'm going to simply accept the original fight decision.

As a minor request, would anyone complain if the original fight was put back? The current revision, I can tell Erithmu was getting frustrated on.

And well, there's a number of technical errors that don't sit right with me, and I'd prefer the cleaner original fight.

For future reference, having an animal companion untrained to bullrush is a move action to push (and requires a DC 25 check).

Also, Elrick's AC in bear form without his shield and barkskin is only 17 (13 when prone). Elrick should recover hit points when he wild shapes. And another big one is Valen has a chance to dispel his own TK manuever on Elrick when he hits with the Greatsword.

Given time constraints and pitlord sanity, I officially declare myself content with the original fight.

I appreciate the effort on Erithmu's part for what was a really annoying fight. Elrick/Valen fights probably should be play-by-post fights given all the options involved.

But on the bright side, Valen leveled to 14, so all is right with the world.

true about the bestowed curse, but:

Although I'm impressed at how small the plains becomes when you're moving 240'300 a round.

sorry to get back to you with that again... but gwerdan has the run feat, he moves 300 a round not 240. (his speed is written in the tactics, btw...)

so things like

round 22->23

distance 60 ft
gwerdan runs 300 ft
tdo double moves 120 ft
new distance 140 (should be 240)

take a bit longer...

considering gwerdan only has 2 or 3 rounds of movement before he gets hit with the curse for a few rounds a day - does it really makes a diffrence here? dark one got another 20 rounds of fly - i am just wondering if hirumajoe would have time to do more work on this fight sicne i want to have teh dark one fight or craft this week.
#105

hirumajoe

May 28, 2008 10:25:39
Well, if it gets held over for a week, you do get a free full activity I believe, so the Dark One could in fact craft. And well, I owe it Gwerdan to do the fight right. I'll see if I can get it fixed before deadline. However, I don't think the plains is as big as you think it is.

Anyways looking at it, I apparently have TDO casting Ghoul's touch 3 times which is definitely off anyways.

Edit: Although anyone know what the exact amount of rounds a character can run for is? The SRD says:
"Run
A character with a Constitution score of 9 or higher can run for a minute without a problem. Generally, a character can run for a minute or two before having to rest for a minute. "

Is 10 rounds or 20 rounds? If its 10 rounds, then this ends alot sooner. If its 20 rounds, then Gwerdan may squeek by (and force me to do all the movement).
#106

dulsi

May 28, 2008 11:25:39
Haven't looked at the SRD but this is from the combat section on d20srd.org.

You can run for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution score, but after that you must make a DC 10 Constitution check to continue running. You must check again each round in which you continue to run, and the DC of this check increases by 1 for each check you have made. When you fail this check, you must stop running. A character who has run to his limit must rest for 1 minute (10 rounds) before running again. During a rest period, a character can move no faster than a normal move action.

#107

hirumajoe

May 28, 2008 11:39:10
Edit: Thanks dulsi for the info.

Given that, and some fort saves, Gwerdan would have stopped running after his 17th round of running, which is round 50.

Okay, I've decided to be a little bit more smart about this rather than spending the next 2 hours moving pins around on a battle map.

The following are true:
1)Gwerdan runs at 300' a round, and 60' on any round he uses his dorje.
2)TDO double moves at 120' a round, and only 60' when attacking.
3)The plains are a 480'x480' square.
4)Optimal movement for Gwerdan involves moving around the outside edge (i.e. if TDO simply moves to the center, Gwerdan's farthest point is a corner.)
5)Optimal movement for TDO is to mirror Gwerdan's movement on a smaller sized circle or square in the ratio of 2/5. Then on any round Gwerdan fails to act, TDO can move and cast 60' + 120' (sqrt(130^2 - 50^2)) to 170' (sqrt(180^2 - 50^2)) range (or 180' to 230'). Silly inaccurate D&D movement rules. The distance is actually 60' + 105' to 155' (since 50' diagonal is 75', so 50 + 130 -75 and 50 + 180 - 75 = 155). However, 165 > 145 still.

6)Assuming TDO takes 2-3 rounds to move to the center (which is the most he'd ever have to do since he can reach a corner from 180' away. 105' range + 240' move = 245' distance, which is 15' short of the corner to center. He can then begin mirroring Gwerdan's movements.

7)The maximum distance Gwerdan will be after TDO's movement each round in this case is 240' - 240*2/5 = 145' if he moves on a circle, or 360'-360*2/5 = 220' when he's in the corners and moving on a square. However, the square has an issue that when Gwerdan moves from a corner along the edge, he winds up at a distance of only 150' on TDO's move action, allowing a move and cast. (Or even just a cast in case of MM from memory). Thus, Gwerdan's optimal movement *is* the circle since it maintains sufficient distance all the time.

In general, on any given round that Gwerdan does not act, its is guaranteed TDO can simply move and cast and be within range. Also, once Gwerdan's dorje contingency kicks in, his speed drops to 60', the same as TDO, which means TDO will then be able to cast again the following round.

Gwerdan fails to act on round 22. This would be the second ghoul touch round, which hits and saved against.

On round 25 Gwerdan has to refresh Vigor. This means he only move 60' and TDO can get closer (if not casting range).
Gwerdan fails to act on round 26 and 27 (Sufficiently long since the last action that TDO can reset the movement cycle - remember only 2-3 rounds to reset). This would be the first and second magic missile. Dealing 14 - 10 (for vigor) and 15 damage (and TDO also getting even closer).

Gwerdan is now at 56+16-19 = 53 hit points with Animal Affinity up and no Vigor. This triggers his dorje use and move only 60'. TDO can cast his 3rd magic missile. Gwerdan then fails to act for another round, thus being hit by shocking grasp at this point he's at 53 + 10 - 17 -17 = 19. Gwerdan then gets activate his dorje and move 60'. TDO moves with him, recovers. Then we get another pair of no action rounds, so Gwerdan goes to 19 +10 - 19 - 6. 4 hit points. At this point, Gwerdan can't win, since his hitpoints will drop to -12 when the AA wears off, which is before fly's duration runs out.

This is the same result as the current fight, so I don't see a need to edit much.

The fact of the matter is, the plains simply aren't big enough. *If* Gwerdan had not been hit by the curse, this would probably be another story (well, maybe not because of run rules), but given mathematically optimal movement, 145' distance just isn't enough.

I'm going to let the fight decision stand.
