New Rulings - Courtroom

The Council Decisions/Revelations

Current Topics

Idle Conversations

These are topics that have died down but had nothing come of them. Personally? I blame the terrorists.
  • Council - Mechanics of the "Awaken" spell is currently being discussed in the council.
  • Council- Delay rules are still being discussed.
  • Courtroom - Sauro wishes an elder decision on using an intelligent cohort as a mount. [and what tricks/training it requires]
  • Council - There is a discussion on how quickly you should be able to aquire ethereal equipment.
  • Courtroom- The rules for Ride and Handle Animal are under discussion.

* Elrick Flamebrother (templer10) & Valen Sky (Hirumajoe) vs. Unknown Monster : Erithmu [Arena] - yea that can be nasty to pitlord.

It could be worse, you could be running another Elrick v. Valen fight rather than Elrick and Valen vs. Unknown Monster.
Although I have a feeling that isn't what you were cursing about...

A play-by-post may or may not make that easier. Fewer decisions on the part of the pitlord, although a bit slower time-wise.

But yeesh. A CR 16 encounter? I need to look at that monster list...

Edit: City fight of Thiel's vs Enoch in Dim light is worse? Dunno. Should be interesting.

Pairings done. Close to an SoE but not quite.

Due to a general decline in activity, and the fact that the 4e books are due out next week, I'm announcing a semi-hiatus following this week. We need to concentrate on getting our 4e ruleset together, and it's getting hard to avoid rematches at many ECLs. Plus, I'm having problems coming up with the time to keep up with stuff.

So next week, I'll be pairing only ECLs 3-5, partly for newcomers and partly because those are the only leagues without serious rematch issues. For those of you for whom that creates extra time, I'm hoping you'll use some of it to our benefit: coming up with ideas for our new fluff and subgames, designing maps and character sheet templates, and most importantly reading the books, playing at D&D Game Day if you haven't participated in a 4e demo game yet, and brainstorming on ways to co-adapt 4e and the CoCo together.

After next week, my intention is to keep only ECLs 3-5 open, although I'll accept request for challenge fights above that (at a credit cost, of course). In addition to working on the new ruleset and infrastructure, we'll also be running 4e playtests to help everyone get used to the new rules and try to identify any chinks in the evolving system. And then we'll launch 4e formally with the Iron Man beginning July 9 (after the U.S. July 4 holiday weekend). The decision to re-open higher 3.5e leagues will be examined then.

D'oh! That sounds a bit like closing down the 3.5 arena rather than keeping it, although it makes sense if we want to focus on 4th ed rules.

I know, but we're struggling here. Fewer than half our fights this week are ECLs 6+, half of those are monster fights, and the other half had to be manually re-assigned to avoid rematches. That's just not healthy, 4e or no.

Yeah, that's an issue.. however I thought that as more characters make it to the higher levels we could have some new matches.. many people could lose interest in the 3.5 arena, as there is no point in advancing a character which won't be played anymore

Well, since the highest Hide modifier is +2 and (at a cursory glance) nobody has anything that would benefit from the shadows, we could probably all agree to pretend it's normal light and make it a little less rolltastic for the pitlord too.

well, the problem with the gleemax database hindered me to activate any character on time today. i wonder where their technicians have gone... with all those problems, they are likely working on something else...

It's a decision which is subject to re-evaluation. We've always had frozen leagues, because we've never had enough characters to fill fights from ECLs 3-20. ECL 10 used to be frozen; we "thawed" it when a large number of characters had collected there, and moved it up to 16.

It may be because too many of us have multiple characters and not enough time (or pitlords) to run them all. ECL 8, for instance, has 7 characters whose players are all active, but only one of those is active this week (and he's crafting). We're spread too thin. Effectively, this is like moving the frozen league down to ECL 6; we'll move it up again when (and if) it becomes sustainable.

The important thing is that it's not a definitive decision. From your previous post I read it that way so I got a bit worried.
Btw I read quite a bit on 4th edition on forums and I will probably switch towards it from the beginning, as it seems quite interesting (just give me gnomes, damned !&"%).

And, more over, it's a good playtest before I introduce 4th edition in my Eberron game in a year or so :D

Given the man power and the timing, freezing the upper leagues in anticipation of the 4th edition release makes sense to me. Certainly if you're aiming for an iron man tournament, people are going to need to make some character teams. Also an official set of rules for it as well needs to be written up, so I guess that something for those with time and interest this coming week.

Monsters:
1 Large humanoid shaped creature

No applicable knowledges

Given the combined knowledges available, they can only be Humanoids, Undead, Elementals or Outsiders. (Arcana, Nature, Dungeoneering is available). Given the multi-legged nature, I'm guessing those aren't humanoids, nor elemental. My problem is I don't see a set of 3 Outsiders or Undead of large size matching that description at ECL 16. (Can't be from the ECL 14 with half-dragon... because well they'd be dragons then). Closest thing I can come up with is a Mummy lord and 2 Devourers, but the Mummy lord would be medium sized...

So color me confused. You sure you have the sizes right?

While we're doing sblocked questions...
NOT FOR Erithmu and SauroGrenom
Does casting spiritual weapon break the effect of sanctuary? You're not directly attacking, it's similar to a summon spell in terms of simply creating an effect that then harms them. What if you cast the spiritual weapon without a victim at first and redirect it to a victim afterwards? Obviously, answer in sblocks or PMs.

1 small quadruped... got it, I may handle him toe to toe at distance... it's even of zax's same size... easy fight then... but what's those tiny things behind him?
wait...
!!!
FIVE THOUSANDS diminutive winged bipeds?!?
How the hell I lost all that time counting that-swarm-that-I-can't-hurt-even-in-my-dreams and didn't flee when the counting reached, say, SIX?!? :D
At least I know that Zax may count really fast, and really fast he shall flee :P
I didn't read the monster entry, but I have no means to fight a swarm (lesson learned: next cycle I'll buy some acid flask ) and even if it's not a swarm (seriously, dude!), I haven't 5001 arrows to shoot

Monster fights are often auto-wins or auto-losses.

While we are talking about 4th edition.. why not scrapping them altogether?
#36

lonewolf

May 29, 2008 9:52:32
I believe that those autowins/autolosses will be fewer in 4E. The Swarms for example are no longer immune to Weapon damage. Hydras no longer have fast healing.

Both of them have just high hp now.

May 30, 2008 7:39:57
@Turanson: I see you posted the fight. If you are short on time I'll accept it, but there are a few mistakes (listing them for future reference):

1) Round 5: Only Soren could take the AoO.
2) Round 7: Bedina cannot be tripped if she fails the trip attempt due to improved trip.
3) Round 9: You can't trip a character standing up with an AoO. As the AoO comes before that he stood up, you can just hit him.
The result won't change as if you slide the rolls the result would be equal. But in other fights it may not be the case.
4) You forgot Bedina's fee in Eland rewards
5) No need to list expendables for mercs, as they get renewed after each fight.

1) right missed that part

2) well you are most likely right just can't read that out of the feat

IMPROVED TRIP [GENERAL]
Prerequisites: Int 13, Combat Expertise.

Benefit: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an opponent while you are unarmed. You also gain a +4 bonus on your Strength check to trip your opponent.

If you trip an opponent in melee combat, you immediately get a melee attack against that opponent as if you hadn’t used your attack for the trip attempt.

Normal: Without this feat, you provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an opponent while you are unarmed.

Special: At 6th level, a monk may select Improved Trip as a bonus feat, even if she does not have the prerequisites.

A fighter may select Improved Trip as one of his fighter bonus feats.
[/qoute]

3) hhmm darn knew that

4) will do

2) well you are most likely right just can't read that out of the feat

However I found another mistake. When Nanook hits Eland in round 7 it should be entitled a trip attempt.
That may make impossible for Eland to withdraw.

A couple of objections (sorry, I know it's boring):
1) You forgot Eland +4 bonus when defending against trips. That make it 9 vs 9. Who wins?
2) Why Eland stands up without tumbling. Even if it's harder, Eland should try that over taking a straight AoO.*

*note to self: when there are chances to be tripped, write in tactics that you stand up in total defense.

2) If need be ill get it in

Just an moot point. The spur mount action requires a DC 15 ride check and deals 1 damage to the mount. Though in this case the damage doesn't matter and we both used it anyway. Looks good otherwise.

Ok, so we are in need of a rerun.
I guess fight 1 is ok, once we added the trip attempt.

However if Eland moves away and then come back to attack Nanook it doesn't make much sense. He should either stay ranged or avoid moving away from the beginning.
#70

turanson

May 31, 2008 6:23:57
ok so the plan for the rerun is:

1) Soren gets his 41 hp.

2) In round 5 Nanook does not get a AOO, so I roll a disarm check, giving Soren a DC 15 concentration check to keep the SNA II casting

3) The Nanooks trip in round 7 fails due to Elands higher total modifier

4) Eland does not withdraw but instead tries to get to attack Soren.

5) From round 9 then ever Soren tries to stand it will be a normal AOO and then on Bedinas turn she will try to trip

is there any thing I have forgotten ?

[post=15984063]Last attempt[/post] it up. I hope its ok now.

I Don't have more time to use on CoCo the next comming weeks so I will not be able to edit the fight more if you are not happy with it you will need a new pitlord. Sorry

more over I can't find time to run my second fight

Orgauth (dulsi) vs. Uguudok Dull-Eye (JackSnape)

So I hope another will take it tactics is

Orgauth Tactic

Start with wand of magic missile in hand and a bag of caltrops.

Cast shield (10% failure) sharing with bat. If shield fails try casting it again. If shield succeeded on the first try cast shocking grasp for bat to use. If shield didn't succeed on first try cast touch of fatigue for bat.

Move towards the center area if I see him at a grate fire magic missile at him. If I get to the center area wait for him and fire magic missiles when I see him. Stay on the dry land. Place caltrops on dry land next to character ((12, 21) if at (12, 20)). Fire at most 5 shots with the wand. If he gets close move half speed back through the caltrops so as not to be hurt by them. In melee use ranseur if he is big and too far away otherwise switch to greataxe. When he is close have the bat fly in and touch with spell. If the 5 shots of the wand are used and not in melee, use bow.

Hopefully Orgauth has better luck this fight cycle.

Well, I disagree with having Morro just stand there and die but I suppose I didn't specify anything so it is up to the pitlord. I do feel he should have used the torch.

We were paired by accident- and thus I didn't know we were going to fight until I got a note from callix 5 mins before I left for work on friday. Admittedly, I gave the advised tactics without even looking at Morro's character sheet =\

All that aside- Donovan's swarm was from a scroll, not memory.

ralein's fight is up too...
where did you get the impression from that a mindblade retains its shape? this is nowhere written in the srd...

well, torch and healing potion, actually. it was a hard call and i asked another pitlord who agreed that this is too much in favor of your side.

Thanks for both runs. Lyonet was redundant in the team fight, so I didn't waste resources on her.

With Ralein, I don't know where I thought I saw the Shape Mind Blade duration. I'll change his sheet, for all it will affect 1 week tops. Still, this actually helped me, since I got Weapon Finesse against the second minotaur. Even if it was lower damage.

Also, only getting hit on a 14 by their best attack takes a lot of the sting out of a fight. Especially when you hit on a 3.

The first couple rounds of [post=16015423]Gaknalak vs Werebears[/post] is up. I'll try to get the rest done before the dealine but might be a little late. (I think I need a two trip checks for knockdown but I'm not sure with DR.)

@wb: The healing potions are mainly for questing. The torches are for swarms. I'll be sure to explicitly state that as a contigency from now on.

Well, we have some concerns but we won anyway without using up more resources than expected, so it's not necessary to redo the fight unless MWB wants to do so ;)

1) Abazilar's spells from scroll (except mage armor) were CL 2, so they would last 10 more rounds. Maybe Abazilar could cast grease instead of web due to increased speed but I'm ok with it, he has another web in memory.
2) I didn't understand why the swarm disappeared at round 40 or so, since duration is concentration + 2 rounds so it can last indefinitely
3) How many bolts did Abazilar use in the fight? He shooted 17 times and hit once, so if you won't make the calculation, I'll write down the average: 9 bolts (17 shoot, 1 hit, 8 recovered)

Anyway, thanks for the run! :D

I guess it's because in round 39 the druid dismounts and draws the sling. That makes him break concentration. Given last concentration was in round 38, they should pop out in round 40.

Round 39:
Sunstroke runs after Abazilar. He bleeds for 1.
Khalim dismounts and draws his sling. The bats deal 3 damage, then disappear.
Abazilar double moves away.

Then why Khalim ever had to dismount? That was not in tactics. Khalim had to always concentrate, and dismount only if the bats disappeared for themselves (like if he loses concentration or the like).
It's a standard action for Khalim to concentrate, while Vicious Bastard can move with its own move action without hampering Khalim's concentration, or double move and thus forcing a DC 12 concentration (vigorous motion) check for Khalim to mantain the spell (in tactics we mentioned that double move was only in extreme cases though).
So why Khalim suddenly wanted to commit suicide? :D

anyway, even if he loses concentration, the bats should last 2 rounds more ;)

sorry to do this - but i can't run darian vs monster (half copper dragon gorgon and kobold sorcerer 7) - my grandmother has passed away and we have family stuff.

tactics for darian

Hi and thanks for pitlording!

Darian starts invisibile in the front of his box with both his dorjes in hand.

Round 1: Darian activates his winged boots and flies into the canopy.
Round 2-7: Darian buffs with Touchsight, Power Resistance, 10pp Defensive Preconition, Vigor from dorje, Energy Adaption and 1pp Force Screen.
Round 8+: Darian flies out in the canopy and readies a greater Endowed 11pp Ego Whip on the gorgon on sight.

Continue those greater Endowed 11pp Ego Whips on the Gorgon.
Try to ignore the Kobold until the Gorgon is down.

As soon as the Gorgon is down or if I find the Kobold alone, create one 11pp Astral Construct with muscle & improved grab(exchange muscle for improved fly if necessary to reach him) that engages the kobold. Then ready greater Endowed 11pp energy missiles(Cold) on his spellcasting.

Against the Gorgons breath weapon(the turn to stone one, not the one from halfdragon) use 1pp for Elan Resistance.

Try to stay in areas where the gorgon cannot fly due to its wingspan.

If pp run out use the energy missile dorje.

Take care man.

There is no pressure on the fight because of the semi-shutdown of 3.5 CoCo anyway.

Can someone remind me what our latest ruling on maintaining concentration was? Does losing LOS break it? Or going out of range? It's not in our court decisions.
#94

TelinArtho

Jun 03, 2008 13:34:06
There's no court ruling because the rules specify the current decision:

1. breaking LOS doesn't break concentration in most cases
2. moving out of range doesn't break concentration in most cases.

Concentration: The spell lasts as long as you concentrate on it. Concentrating to maintain a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Anything that could break your concentration when casting a spell can also break your concentration while you’re maintaining one, causing the spell to end.
You can’t cast a spell while concentrating on another one. Sometimes a spell lasts for a short time after you cease concentrating.

The creature or object must appear within the spell’s range, but it does not have to remain within the range.

Concentration: The power lasts as long as you concentrate on it. Concentrating to maintain a power is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Anything that could break your concentration when manifesting a power can also break your concentration while you’re maintaining one, causing the power to end. You can’t manifest a power while concentrating on another one. Some powers may last for a short time after you cease concentrating. In such a case, the power keeps going for the given length of time after you stop concentrating, but no longer. Otherwise, you must concentrate to maintain the power, but you can’t maintain it for more than a stated duration in any event. If a target moves out of range, the power reacts as if your concentration had been broken.
