Anything marked "spectators" is not for Zevox to look at until after the fight.

Okay, so. Start in default position, holding stone of fly and stone of touchsight. Simple starting buffs:

13 pp Defensive Precognition (+5 AC/saves)
7 pp Freedom of Movement
7 pp Energy Adaptation (resist 30 all elements)
Fly from stone.

After fly is up, ascend into the canopy, and start looking for the Dragon. If I get any reason to believe it is invisible, or come upon it with mirror images, use the touchsight stone. Go ahead and hide in the canopy while I'm at it - probably won't help, but I may as well try.

Note since the canopy gives me cover and concealment, I'll have AC 48 and 20% concealment. And I have 58 pp left after buffing.

What is Istyar doing, or is he not coming?

Starting positions:
IMAGE(http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=forest;a=Name,S,3,3,Istima;b=Name,H,2,63,Dragon)

Istima goes first.

Round 1: Istima manifests defensive precognition, and the dragon casts protection from fire. No chance of hearing at that distance.

Round 2: Istima manifests freedom of movement, and the dragon casts shield of faith from a scroll, passing the UMD check easily.

Round 3: Istima manifests energy adaptation, and the dragon casts invisibility from a scroll.

Round 4: Istima manifests fly from a stone, and ascends to the canopy. The dragon casts bear's endurance from a scroll.

Resources used so far: 27 pp, stone of fly.

Istyar stays behind. I've no use for him here. (Generally, unless it's in the plains, arena, or maybe city, he really isn't worth bringing for me anymore. I just list to bring him in case I do get one of those maps.)

Search pattern... eh, whatever's convenient for you. Personally on this map I always have characters who have finished buffing move right towards each other to save time. Not much point in them wandering blindly for a while, is there?

Round 5: Istima double moves north to 3,27.

Spectators
The dragon casts cat's grace from a scroll. Istima is still too far away to hear.

...damn it, that ray had just enough of an attack modifier to hit me in spite of Defensive Precog and cover. That's just evil, Yitzi...

...a question. The "Channel Power" psicrystal ability says:
Channel Power (Sp): If the owner is 15th level or higher, he can manifest powers through the psicrystal to a distance of up to 1 mile. The psicrystal is treated as the power’s originator, and all ranges are calculated from its location.
When channeling a power through his psicrystal, the owner manifests the power by paying its power point cost. He is still subject to attacks of opportunity and other hazards of manifesting a power, if applicable (for instance, he becomes visible when manifesting an offensive power if invisible, as does the psicrystal).

Will a ray power channeled through a Psicrystal use the Psion's attack modifier, or the psicrystal's?

I believe the crystal's, same as a familiar making a touch attack. And it broke invisibility with that ray, so no precog.

Well, that's good news, then. Have Nole (my psicrystal) get out of my pocket and stand beside me in the canopy. Then manifest a full power Empowered Maximized Energy Ray (Fire) on it, channeled through Nole. +13 ranged touch, +15 vs SR 22, for 141 damage (9d6+9 maximized = 63 *1.5 empowered = 94.5 * 1.5 vulnerable = 141.75, sadly round down by D&D rules). Regain my focus with my move action.

You already used your move action...it had a ready. You want to still go with that plan for the standard?

Oh. Well... yeah, fire the ray. I'd have to take a round restoring both of my focuses every other round no matter what anyway, may as well not waste an action here just because I'll have to do that immediately.

(Incidentally, is it okay to presume I shared all my buffs with my psicrystal? Don't want him dying just because of a breath weapon or something, and wouldn't even if I weren't using him like this, since he has my second focus.)

You can assume that, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that there's a limit of one metapsionic feat per power...even if not, I would assume empower and maximize combine the same way as by metamagic, meaning it's 63 plus half of 9d6+9.

...er, what? I can see nowhere in the core rules saying I'm limited to one metapsionic feat per power. And I have no idea what you're talking about with that last.

"An empowered, maximized spell gains the separate benefits of each feat: the maximum result plus one-half the normally rolled result." Makes sense to apply the same to powers; it just isn't said there because it's rare to be able to use 2 metapsionic feats since it needs psicrystal containment.

So, Zevox, you still want to go with that plan?

Okay, after some looking around, I see that is under the Maximize Spell metamagic feat description. That's a pretty ridiculous way to do it in my opinion, but it's a core rule, so I'm stuck with it. Either way though, the total will still be multiplied by 1.5 for the Dragon's weakness, which means an average damage of 124-125. Not bad, though I may end up needing a third shot this way. And I may be in big trouble if I roll poorly on SR. But the only way around that is to go for Crystal Shard instead, and that will definitely take 3-4 shots. Which I barely have enough juice for. Though if I roll below a 7 on SR on any of the Energy Ray shots, I'd want to revert to that anyway... and since this one had time to buff, unlike the Gold I beat a while back, you may have given it some energy resistance/protection, which could screw me...

Hm, okay, change of plans. Empowered Maximized Crystal Shard, not Energy Ray. +13, no SR, 53 + 9d6/2 damage. Fire away.

Istima fires a crystal shard at the dragon, and it hits.

Yup. Though given what it is, odds are it fails only on a 1. But may as well check - I'll take a lucky kill from massive damage if I can get it.

Ok, now I need an answer to my question in the tavern, as that will affect the dragon's next action...

The dragon flies back and forth (doing wingovers) while rising to get to melee range (right under Istima) and then casts a spell and touches Istima, he takes a penalty of 2 to his mental stats (also costing 8 pp).

Zevox, your turn.
