King of the Hill: Krusk's agent (mucki) vs. Varjo's agent (Stormwind) vs. Maya's agent (MindWandererB)[Arena]

This is a playtest fight to test the proposed community rules. The fight is between Krusk's agent, Varjo's agent and Maya's agent. If you are not mucki, Stormwind or MindWandererB, please do not post here.

For the purposes of this fight, all participants are asked to roll using the same session (King of the Hill [Arena]: Krusk's agent vs. Varjo's agent vs. Maya's agent) of the CoCo dice roller (user: Playtest; password: playtest)

All participants are also required to use the [Arena] CoCo battle map to show any movement.
Finally, a summary of each rounds actions will be posted every round.

Results (after 50 rounds)
Maya's agent (Bartholomew): 7 rounds on the Hill (winner)
Varjo's agent (Ilma): 6 rounds on the Hill
Krusk's agent (Jack): 5 rounds on the Hill

Per original tactics, Bartholomew starts just to the side of the front center with longspear in hand. He runs directly onto the Hill.

Also per original tactics, Ilma starts at (31,8) and moves onto the hill. Seeing it already occupied she continues to move, but she remains on the ground ... for now

NOTE1: MWB started east, but he was supposed to start west. I am swapping sides with him, since it does not really matter, and it would probably be more confusing if the already posted maps are mirror image versions.

NOTE2: According to the rules of King of the Hill, the central pillar is actually not there, despite being on our maps.

Compared to his eager opponents Jack leisurely strolls out (double move), wielding his crossbow while doing so.

Note: Currently, the rules don't say anything about having to 'stand' on the hill for a King of the Hill battle. This would need to be changed to prevent burrowing under or flying above if the consensus is that a character must 'stand' on the hill to gain points.

I am currently assuming that you must 'stand' on the hill to count as occupying the hill.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

On another matter, gaining points in King of the Hill battles may be very difficult, paritculary with 4 participants. In such a case if one participant dies, then in the next four rounds (due to recovery rules) one participant must kill the two other still living participants just to be able to claim 1 point before the dead guy is on his feat and headed for the center again. This would imply that such fights are very likely to hit the 50 rounds maximum which might be a bit rough as an average ... we'll have to see how this works out, but I believe it is a potential problem, especially with higher level characters in fights with recovery rules.

MindWandererB

Quite possibly--but at higher levels, and with more specialized agents, I expect other options, like bull rushes, involuntary teleports, disabling magic, etc. to make it easier.

Ilma takes a step vertical upwards [5ft step straight up] and then slams into Bartholomew again, but this time her attack from above misses [Slam attack: 8 vs AC13 (miss)].

OOC: Currently only Bartholomew occupies the hill (assuming that you actually have to 'stand' on the hill to occupy it.)

OOC: I am consfused. With Ilma flying 5ft up, can I still flank? The rules are a bit scarce on 3d issues ...

Also: I could attack you guys with my sap, doing subdual damage. If you go unconsious, do you get to respawn, or do i just win ?

Jack drops his x-bow to the floor, draws his rapier and moves onto the hill, next to Bartholomew.

OOC: Regarding flanking, as I understand it yes you can, as long as a line from the center of the flankers square to the center of your square passes through opposite sides of your targets square, then I believe you can flank.

Regarding unconsiousness, the recovery rules would apply. That is if your character/agent does nothing for 4 consecutive rounds then you are healed to half hp and teleported to your starting box.

Round 3
  • Bartholomew 5/7 HP, AC 13
  • Ilma: 9/9 HP, AC 17

  • Jack 8/8 HP, AC 16

Flanking: no, actually. Stormwind quotes the rule correctly, but in 3d you use cubes rather than squares. You'd have to run the line through opposite sides of the cube, which is impossible when we're both below.

Bartholomew is undistracted by the presence of the newcomer on the hill. He takes another swipe at the elemental, finally landing a blow--that nearly slices it in half! He then puts his sickle away and, grasping his spear in both hands, takes a step back.

Attack: 20! Damage [6]+1=7.

IMAGE(http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Bart,M,30,34,31,34;b=Ilma,S,29,34;c=Jack,M,30,33)

Ilma turns her focus onto her nearest opponent and slams into Jack, but her attack from above misses [Slam attack: 14 vs AC16 (miss)]. She then starts evasive maneuvers [Dodge (Jack)] and moves around Jack, provoking an AoO [Jack - AoO: 10 vs AC18 (miss)][Bartholomew - AoO: 20! vs AC17 (hit); minimum damage -> unconcious], and falls.

OOC: In the interest of speed I rolled the AoO's for both of you guys, ... I have to say MWB - the dice love you ... two criticals ... Wow .... Since it is irrelevant whether Ilma is now dead or just unconcious, I didn't bother rolling damage.

Jack lands a lucky blow and strikes down Bartholomew. (1d20+1=19 1d6+1=5, threat 1d20+1=17 1d6+1=3 confirmed)

EDIT: Jack is repositioning himself at the south end to wait for Ilma. Too bad I left my crossbow outside the hill ...
IMAGE(http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=J,M,32,29,Jack).

EDIT2: I stumbled upon something that needs changing in the rules. Recovery rules do not restore equipment, so I could just loot your bodies for everything, and break all your stuff. That clearly is not a good thing to allow. Also, I still think that with the wording as is (healed to 1/2 your hp) you would not actually get any healing if you have full hp, but are disabled due to nonlethal damage.
#30

Stormwind

Feb 25, 2008 2:52:17
OOC: Actually regarding the healing, healing does heal nothlethal damage.

Edited: (Interesting point however is that healing always heals an equal amount of non-lethal damage. To illustrate this consider an agent with 10hp who take 8hp damage and 14hp non-lethal damage. With the recovery rule this agent is healed to half hp, so the 3hp of actual damage is healed to bring the agent to 5hp, but this would still leave 11hp of non-lethal damage.
Perhaps an alternation to the recovery rule should be considered to remove all non-lethal damage remaining?

Regarding equipment: I agree something should be added in the recovery rules to prevent equipment from being looted/destroyed in this manner. Perhaps something like -

[CENTER]"Whilst a character/agent is awaiting recovery, their equipment is protected from further harm or removal from their person by the arena's highly qualified sorcerers."

@All: lonewolf mentioned a point in the tavern that I'd forgotten about, ... although it doesn't really change anything. Since Ilma is an elemental, she is immune to crits. This only affects the charge Jack made in round 9 ... I have deleted the crit confirm for that charge in the roller, although nothing changes as the initial damage is already sufficient for Ilma to go unconcious again.

Bartholomew runs back onto the hill.

The rule about readied actions applies only to negating attacks--it's perfectly possible to ready to move in such a way that continued movement would provoke, or even be impossible. As such, I'm going to hold off on mapping the exact route.... I think you two have a good handle on how I'm playing this, so I'll just let you run Bartholomew yourselves while I'm at D&DXP.

Well, in that case I would like to prepare to sidestep so I get an AoO if Batholomew tries to run past me. To speed this up, I am just going to roll the AoO as if it happened, if it doesn't just ignore the roll.

OOC: Does Bart get to take AoO's (since he is staggered)? And if yes, wouldn't the AoO make him unconcious? Also: does the recovery counter actually start when you are at 0 hp? You still have an action left and occupy the hill, no ?
#69

Stormwind

Mar 07, 2008 6:19:47
Firstly, Bart is Disabled, not staggered (Staggered is when your non-lethal damage is equal to your remaining hp; Disabled is when your current hp is exactly 0).
Regarding AoO's, as far as I know nothing in the disabled condition prevents a character from taking AoO's. All it does is limit you to a single move or standard action each round.

Regarding the recovery counter, as written you can choose to start the recovery counter simply by doing nothing for the round. I don't know if we should add a clause that if you are counting down the recovery counter then you don't count as occupying the hill ... Personally I think it reasonable that you can do nothing and prevent someone else from occupying the hill, but if you are the only one on the hill then I would question whether you should be eligible for getting the points for 'occupying the hill' since you are counting down your recovery counter. Just my 2c.

Sorry, I mixed up the state names, but what i was referring to was this:
Taking move actions doesn’t risk further injury, but performing any standard action (or any other action the game master deems strenuous, including some free actions such as casting a quickened spell) deals 1 point of damage after the completion of the act.

An AoO is not really a standard action, but a normal attack is, so I think that after an AoO Bartholomew should drop to -1.

As far as recovery goes, I think that if you do "recovery" you should not also count as occupying the hill. Ie: Bartholomew could not recover by doing nothing and still prevent you from getting points. Otherwise that would be the most profitable option in most cases: Just run onto the hill, officially do nothing, do some AoO's and when you die run immediately back on (because your recovery is already up).

Also, assuming that Bartholomew is again doing nothing I am already posting my actions for round 23.

Jack reloads and shoots at Ilma again. After another miss (1d20+2=10 1d8=4) he drops his crossbow and draws his Rapier.

I'd agree with that, however although it is logical, by RAW an AoO is not specified as a strenuous activity (i.e. an activity that would cause you to drop from disabled to -1hp) so it would need an Elder or GM ruling (IMHO). In this case it is irrelevant as Bartholomew missed anyway, but I agree that it is something that should be decided on.

ok, MWB, Bart's up.

However at this stage I believe I need to make a comment: If characters still count as occupying the hill when counting down the recovery counters, then with any two characters teamed up I believe I can make it practically impossible for anyone else to score.
For example, consider char A and B, teamed up against char C and D:
Round 1: Char A runs to center, Char B runs to center
Round 2: Char A starts counter
Round 4: Char B starts counter
Round 7: Char A runs to center
Round 8: Char A starts counter
Round 9: Char B runs to center
Round 10: Char B starts counter
...

This can be avoided simply by stating that 'when counting down the recovery counter, the character is considered to be unconcious'

----
If we decide to change this as I suggest above then best if we simply continue from where we are ... i.e. don't retroactively apply it.

Rather than "unconscious," I'd rather phrase it as "if you do nothing for a round with the intention of using it to begin or continue your recovery countdown, you do not count as occupying the hill for that round." Right, to make this easier on ourself, I will just single move onto the hill. I think this will happen:

IMAGE(http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=J,M,26,30,28,30,29,30,Jack;b=I,S,34,34,29,31,Ilma)

1) Jack starts moving east, when he reaches (28,30) Ilma moves to (29,31) to threaten that square

2) Jack uses tumble to continue past Ilma (1d20+4=24).

3) Jack attacks Ilma, but misses by an inch (1d20+1=17 1d6+1=4).

Now, just out of curiosity: What would have happened if Jack decided to charge Ilma ? After ilma moves, does he get the charge bonus, because he already moved 10' ? can he stop charging and continue with a normal move and attack (so that he doesn't end up outside the hill)? I originally wanted to charge, but decided against it because i couldn't figure out what would happen
#98

Stormwind

Mar 12, 2008 6:57:27
If Jack had charged, then I guess the following would have happened: Jack begins to charge, Ilma's ready action triggers (by RAW a readied action occurs just before the action that triggered it) and she moves to the side of the hill before Jack actually starts to move, Jack charges (but stays outside the hill) since Ilma is on the edge of the hill.
Since a charge is a full round action, Jack wouldn't be able to do anything else that round, and he definitely couldn't change to move and attack.

Ok, but if your moves takes place completely before mine, then couldn't I just move somewhere completely else to completely deny you the AoO ? Apart form the fact: if your movement happens before mine does, how can it be triggered by something that only happens after I have started to move (namely me entering the hill). To stick with the charge example: When you block my way, so that the charge does not end on the hill, then your reay action should not trigger (I never touched the hill).

Note: I am not exactly sure which weapon Bartholomew has in his hands. When he died it was the sickle. I don't think recovery changes your weapon, so it should still be the sickle. I think you are still have the longspear in the other hand though.

Jack charges Bartholomew and hits him. (1d20+3=22 1d6+1=3). EDIT: prevented by AoO (see below)

Yeah, he has his spear (my mistake), and therefore does get an AoO. I am not sure if the -2 AC already apply at the time of the AoO, but i included them in the roll. It doesn't matter either way.

Missing AoO from Bartholomew against Jack in Round 33: 1d20+2=16 1d8+1=6. Jack impales himself on Bartholomews spear and his attack never hits.

That raises a question, though--usual CoCo rules are that, when a correction is made, thematic rolls are kept and just moved up or down in sequence. If we follow that protocol, Bart will make his attack now, and it will be successful. But it's pretty strange to know the outcome of an action before you do it.
#129

Stormwind

Mar 20, 2008 14:04:19
True ... especially since you could then optimize your following moves based on knowing the outcome of your roll.

It would give reason for not keeping thematic rolls (at least in separate thread/play-by-post fights) ... something to seriously consider at least.
