i have to say that i dislike the name spatha - not for its origin, but for its closeness to the city of sparta. not knowing the background makes it feel like a cheap ripoff.

I think that the name should have a meaning at least in a dead language.
Even the Greeks wouldn't understand the word Spatha.

Actually, a spatha is a sword, not unlike the roman gladius. Several of the names on that list come from the Wikipedia List of Ancient Weapons

i do not dislike it being a weapon, but it being a word close to something most of the readers are likely to know, opposed by this term, which was totally new to me before. a gladius is something most people will know somehow - that a "spatha" is something similar, is something that will evade common knowledge, and therefor i'd prefer something less similar to the greek city.

Personnelly i like a name thats close to a historical City, it gives new players an idea.. Spartan just had a movie (300) made about it's warriors.. even if we are 180 degrees different from that it will get players who see it and who will give it a shot..

("Spatha = The word derives from Ancient Greek σπάθη (spathe), "any broad blade, of wood or metal" but also "broad blade of a sword".[1] (Most possible is that spatha is the Romanization of the Doric Greek *σπάθα spatha) The word remains today as Greek σπάθη (spathe), fem. and σπαθί (spathi), neut.; The Latin word became French épée, Portuguese and Spanish espada, Italian spada, and Albanian shpata all meaning "sword")

Tunagolem was concerned about the words being meaningless. I share his concern in part; I want the name to stick in people's minds, and Gladius does that. The Spatha/Sparta association will help achieve that, although I naturally prefer my own suggestion (Sagaris). Still, that's why we put such things to a vote, and thus far, Spatha seems very popular.

I propose to hold a run-off vote. I voted for both Spatha and Sagaris since I liked both better than the alternatives(which are all to long/complicated), but given the choice between those 2, I also like Sagaris better.
