| #2MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 0:01:56 | I'll take the Sewer. Initiative: Grrntag [13]+4=17 Savage [19]+0=19 Grrntag starts in the default position with longbow in hand. Savage starts in the back with dagger and loaded crossbow in hand. |
| #3callixJun 24, 2008 0:16:54 | Yin: [11]+4=15 Yang: [17]+3=20 Yin and Yang start in Box 1. Wrath of the Wild start in Box 2. Yang starts in the lower centre, greatsword drawn. Yin starts in the default location, shuriken in main hand, short sword in off. Yang moves toward the centre. |
| #4MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 0:35:30 | Savage delays for Grrntag to lead. Grrntag readies an action to shoot any opponent on sight with Twin Strike and moves. Savage readies an action to shoot on sight with Eyebite and also moves. |
| #5callixJun 24, 2008 0:41:21 | Yin advances toward the sewer grate. [Stealth 14 vs Passive Perception 14] Grrntag hears someone moving over near the grate. Yang moves around through the centre. |
| #6MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 1:37:28 | Grrntag moves up to the edge of the passageway and readies again. Savage also moves and readies. Yin and Yang faintly hear the sound of movement (Stealth 17-5+2=14 vs. passive Perception 15). |
| #7callixJun 24, 2008 1:49:00 | Yin advances to the corner and readies. Yang moves up toward the corner. How do you want to resolve the standoff? |
| #8MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 11:43:34 | I'll break it. Grrntag begins to move forward, triggering Yin's readied action.... No cover, but it's long range for a shuriken. |
| #9callixJun 24, 2008 16:01:07 | A shuriken flies out from the other side of the grate, slicing across Grrrntag's side. Sly Flourish, 11 damage. Yin is revealed, but has cover. |
| #10MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 16:38:32 | Grrntag retaliates, marking Yin as his quarry and firing his bow, hitting once for 16 damage. Savage follows suit, moving, cursing Yin, and hitting with Eyebite for 15 damage, dropping her cold. Her Misty Step takes her back into the corridor. |
| #11callixJun 24, 2008 17:10:23 | Yang moves around the corner and charges Grrrntag. He hits for 8. Yin deteriorates. That's pretty much game. |
| #12MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 17:29:38 | Grrntag drops his bow, draws his swords, and attacks with Two-Fanged Strike, hitting once for 11 damage. Savage moves around the corner, curses Yang, and attacks with Witchfire, but misses. Not if I can't roll better than that, it isn't. |
| #13callixJun 24, 2008 19:17:49 | Yang turns and lands a Steel Serpent Strike, dealing 10 damage. I believe this drops Grrrntag. If it does, he moves up next to Savage, then spends an action point to drop his daily Brute Strike. Even with his Elven Precision, he misses. Just as well it's reliable. Savage is marked. Yin deteriorates again. |
| #14MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 19:35:21 | Grrntag also deteriorates. Savage shifts back, which unfortunately draws a basic attack from Yang, which hits for 11 damage (I went ahead and rolled it so I can get on with this). Savage retaliates with Infernal Wrath and Eyebite, dealing 12 damage and rendering her invisible to Yang for a round. |
| #15callixJun 24, 2008 19:40:54 | Yang has little to go on. He steps forward, and readies Brute Strike on Savage becoming visible. When she does, he hits for 23, dropping her. Should we have another fight to show the consequences of a nova like that one? |
| #16MindWandererBJun 24, 2008 19:49:52 | Wasn't much of a nova--an AP and a daily--but sure. Your turn for a map. |
| #17callixJun 24, 2008 20:00:01 | I like the Cavern. And Yang doesn't actually have anything else he can nova with, so it's good for him. Yin: Initiative 23 Yang: Initiative 9 I'm Box 4, you're Box 3. |
| #18MindWandererBJun 25, 2008 14:30:09 | Grrntag: Initiative 20 Savage: Initiative 8 Grrntag starts in the front with longbow in hand. Savage starts in the back with dagger and loaded crossbow in hand. |
| #19callixJun 25, 2008 15:51:22 | Yang moves out counterclockwise. He finds Grrrntag, who in turn sees him. |
| #20MindWandererBJun 25, 2008 16:06:47 | That's your entire action? It's only a single move. Also, there's no LOS from there: |
| #21callixJun 25, 2008 17:27:08 | Sorry, lost a pin. |
| #22MindWandererBJun 25, 2008 19:30:30 | Grrntag marks Yang as his quarry and uses Twin Strike, hitting once (AC 17 exactly with cover and Prime Shot) for 6 damage, then draws a longsword. |
| #23callixJun 26, 2008 6:41:44 | Yin advances and readies. She rolled a Stealth of 13; Grrrntag will see her on LOS, but Savage wouldn't with Yang providing cover. |
| #24MindWandererBJun 26, 2008 13:39:01 | Savage moves, curses Yang, and attacks with Witchfire, but misses. I'm assuming that whatever Yin does won't disrupt her action. |
| #25callixJun 26, 2008 16:54:22 | Yin's readied action doesn't trigger. She's only got a 12-square range. Yang moves up to Grrrntag, and delivers a heavy overhand blow that winds the bugbear slightly, but wounds him heavily for 18 damage. He also marks Grrrntag. Steel Serpent Strike. He's slowed and can't shift. |
| #26MindWandererBJun 26, 2008 21:56:58 | Grrntag drops his bow, draws his other sword, designates Yang as his quarry, and uses Two-Fanged Strike. He misses with one attack but crits with the other, dealing 21 damage. |
| #27callixJun 26, 2008 23:29:23 | Yin advances and tries a Deft Strike to confound her enemies. Unfortunately, she bumps into the cavern wall, alerting her foes. She flings a shuriken at Grrrntag. She misses, trying to avoid hitting Yang. |
| #28MindWandererBJun 27, 2008 13:09:59 | How is that a miss? I see a 20 in the roller, which goes down to 18 for cover (not the cover from Yang, but the cover from the corner you stayed behind). That's still a hit on AC 17. Savage circles the pillars to maintain her Shadow Walk and fires an Eldritch Blast at Yang, but misses. She uses an action point to try again and hits, dealing 17 damage and dropping the fighter solidly. She curses Yin. Edit: Oh, right, that lets me keep going. Grrrntag marches up to Yin, designates her as his quarry, and attacks with Twin Strike. Once again, he hits once, and deals 3 damage (minimum). |
| #29callixJun 27, 2008 16:58:49 | Whoops. Got confused on his AC. 8 damage, drops Grrntag. How will we handle this? Also, do you know how the drow Cloud of Darkness works with movement? Basically, does it follow you? |
| #30MindWandererBJun 27, 2008 20:25:53 | 18 and 8 damage (should be 9, shouldn't it?) makes only 26 out of his 29. I don't see a problem. I don't see anything to indicate that the cloud moves--it even says "stays in place." |
| #31callixJun 29, 2008 4:01:41 | I've just noticed that Savage has no LOS to Yin. The two statues stop them working. Actions later. |
| #32MindWandererBJun 29, 2008 14:17:51 | I've just noticed that Savage has no LOS to Yin. The two statues stop them working. Actions later. Yes, she does: |
| #33callixJun 29, 2008 16:54:32 | In any case... Yang neither improves nor deteriorates. Yin calls up a shroud of darkness, blinding Grrrntag with it. She takes this opportunity to deliver a Positioning Strike, which drops Grrrntag before he has a chance to be positioned (15 damage). Then, she sidesteps behind a corner and back to break line of sight. She hides herself very effectively (Stealth 25). |
| #34MindWandererBJun 30, 2008 11:58:44 | Savage has no desire to run up to Yin and be ambushed, so she hides herself and focuses on defense. Stealth 22 and total defense. |
| #35callixJun 30, 2008 16:10:32 | Yang doesn't change. Yin steps back around the corner. Unable to see Savage, she focuses on her defense. (Total Defense) |
| #36MindWandererBJun 30, 2008 16:23:50 | Grrrntag deteriorates. Savage still doesn't hear or see anything and realizes Yin isn't going to come to her. She begins to move back around the pillar and auto-spots Yin. She then falls back to gain cover and activate Shadow Walk, then attacks with Eyebite. She misses. |
| #37callixJun 30, 2008 17:43:43 | Yang deteriorates. Yin steps back and forth to break line of sight, then attacks Savage (Note: Yin's +11 Hide wins the tiebreak; this means she autohides when not taking penalties). She strikes the statue. She draws another shuriken, and uses her reserves of energy to sneak behind the corner and back again and attack. Savage easily spots Yin the second time, and presses herself against the statue, dodging the attack. |
| #38MindWandererBJun 30, 2008 20:13:16 | Grrrntag makes a miraculous recovery! He is conscious, at 8 HP, and has used his second wind (+2 all defenses), but he's prone. Savage attempts Eyebite again, and fails miserably. She circles to maintain concealment. |
| #39callixJul 01, 2008 7:27:42 | Yang is unchanged. Yin stabs at the prone Grrrntag. She catches his face, and drops him back to -11 HP. She then moves, concealing herself from Savage and drawing a new shuriken. Stealth 27. Move to (19,8) then back again. |
| #40MindWandererBJul 03, 2008 0:28:37 | Note that from her current position, Yin does not have cover from Savage (edges don't contribute to cover). If you want to use stealth, you'll have to pick a new spot. |
| #41callixJul 03, 2008 3:18:59 | This do? |
| #42MindWandererBJul 04, 2008 0:25:08 | Yes, but... Savage gives chase, and ends up with an autospot at the end of her move. She tries Eyebite yet again and finally lands a hit for 12 damage, rendering her temporarily invisible to Yin. |
| #43callixJul 04, 2008 2:15:44 | Yang deteriorates. Yin tries to hide from Savage's last known location (Stealth 19). She readies to attack Savage when she appears. Savage reappears, and Yin flings a shuriken at her. It hits for 19 damage. "Until the start of your next turn" can be abused so easily... Also for some reason, color=grey gives green. Weird, huh? |
| #44MindWandererBJul 04, 2008 2:43:13 | Yeah, I knew about the color. Brit-unfriendly, I guess. I agree that Eyebite isn't nearly as useful as it could be. It's a bit more useful when your partner is still up. I'm only using it for the Will attack. Savage follows and attempts to finish Yin off with Infernal Wrath, but really can't hit very well today (rolled a 2). |
| #45callixJul 04, 2008 2:59:18 | Aussie, if it matters, but we use British spelling. I keep having to make myself write "color" instead of "colour", and I've been here almost a year. Yang still isn't dead. Yin draws a fresh shuriken, sneaks around a corner, and tries to finish Savage. She hits only shadows. |
| #46MindWandererBJul 06, 2008 13:28:33 | A final eyebite from Savage finally finds its mark, bringing Yin down at last with 11 damage. ........ Another close match... I wonder if these characters are that well-matched, or if level 1 just has that much room for error that pretty much every fight will be equally swingy? |
| #47callixJul 06, 2008 17:21:58 | I really don't know. The other playtest I'm in seems to be about as swingy; I almost always get the tactical drop on CrazyArtificer's characters, but they have a lot more invested in defense, so I have trouble finishing them off. Still, with so few build decisions at first level, it's almost impossible to create a particularly good or bad character. 4e is a bit of a balance straightjacket. It's probably good for the PvP balance, but it makes the arena a little less interesting if we can't really have any concrete advantages for the first few levels. Also, I think Yin has been carrying the party a little, though that may just be that she's the striker. I think the total flexibility she has with ranged/melee combat really helps. |
