So i was looking to spice up some gladitorial combat for my party and made up some new 'modes'.  Basically stole them out of Call of Duty.  We ran them the other night, and the party loved them, but i found that they weren't all that challenging, so i could use some suggestions or suggestions for other types of gladiator games.

First mode we did was Domination.
There were 3 points that once someone got to the point they had to use a standard action to activate it.  At the end of the round, whoever controlled a point got a point for it.  After 10 rounds whoever had the most points won.  I also instituted a 'respawn' system, where once bloodied, a creature or pc would be teleported back to an area and fully healed, but not given powers back. The problems i found with this mode were that the creatures couldn't do enough damage to the pc's quick enough, and the pc's quickly took over the battlefield as they could bloody monsters fast and heal themselves, and wound up basically spawn camping the monsters.  We decided as a group to change the respawn system and make it once dropped to 0 or below hp, you get teleported and brought back to your bloodied value.  My other thinking was to use npc's rather than monsters, as they would have a much better chance i think than monsters.

The second mode was a headquarters round, gave the party some precut blocks to build their hq(blocks are destructible), and then put an obelisk in the middle of it, and it would take 2 or 3(can't remember exactly) standard actions to 'use' the obelisk and destroy it. They also got to place 2 traps on the battlefield. Then after the round is over the monsters built an hq and the players attacked it.  Respawning rules were the same.  Once again i found that the monsters weren't really able to challenge the pc's for long, after 2 rounds or so the party had such a large advantage over the monsters that they were able to fend them off for quite a few rounds until i just gave them the round.  Once again thinking npc's and different 'respawning' rules might help this be a little more fun.

I know the dangers of using npc's, but i think respawning of sorts would help limit this. I want the different types of games to challenging, but not unwinnable, so any thoughts or ideas on how to improve my 'modes' would be great.  Also 'modes' that you guys have run would be awesome also, always looking for interesting things to put into my campaign.  Not sure if it matters, but the party is lvl 8, halfway to 9.
