"These flat bonuses do not stack with enhancement bonuses gained from magic items, and they progress at a slightly slower rate. As a result, magic swords, armor, and amulets retain their appeal." OK, if they do not stack, then what is the point of having them? If you are 7th level, and get a +2 to attack and damage rolls from the fixed enhancment, and find a +1 sword...what's the point to carrying it (aside from whatever properties the sword may have beyond the numerical bonus)? What if it's a +3 sword? Now you just have a +3? Again, what's the point of the fixed bonus as it's now lost in favor of the item bonus? In my view, I will be using the fixed bonus system, but I will NOT be using any magic items that grant a numerical bonus to hit and damage. Instead, magic items will have the properties they normally bestow (example, the blade lights up a 5 square area), but if the bonus is built into the system, why would I use bonus values on my magic items? If they stacked, I could see using items that are no more then, say...+2 (at the most) for a really special/powerful item. But since they don't stack...what's the point of the Fixed Enhancment system? Is it just to reduce the "need" to distribute magic items evenly (since they are harder to come by?) And again, if that's they case, why use the numerical bonuses at all on weapons at all (since you'll be getting level based bonuses anyway)? If you look at the Fixed Rewards as presentd in the DMG2, it's the same system...only it's presented as "replacing" the magic items system...so why word it differently for Dark Sun? Again, I'll be using the alternate, fixed reward system...but I will not be applying numerical bonuses to my magic weapons (no +1, +2, +3, etc sword). Don't see the need for it. Wasn't presented that way in the DMG2. And if the bonus does not stack, not sure why I'd use the Fixed Reward system in DS anyway. Any thoughts on this? |

Enough to make you want to keep it, but not so much that breaking your weapon is devastating. It doesn't stack, but the highest one is the one that applies. |
