Anyone seen "John Carter"?

Mar 13, 2012 23:40:09 It was pretty much "Dark Sun: the Movie". Thri-kreen, Defilers, gladiatoral fighting, and lots of desert.

Did you like it?

Whether or not you liked it, did it create some nice visuals that reminded you of Dark Sun? Would you use it as a comparison to people unfamiliar to Dark Sun? ("What's Athas like? Have you seen John Carter? It looks like Barsoom.")

Mar 16, 2012 9:00:59 I actually loved the movie and it screamed Dark Sun all over it. The Tharks (?) were a good representation of what I have thought Thri-Kreen to be like. Kind of made me want to run a Thrikreen game where the chief of a tribe has sent young members of his tribe to retirieve his daughter that was captured by raiders. This starting adventure would bond the group together and then they would be sent out to do various things for their tribe. Toss in politics and this could be very interesting.

Another thing about John Carter I liked was that their flying machines rode on light, not air. Really in earth terms it was probably solar powered but the way they explained it sounded very Dark Sunish.

Yeah many great things came to mind while watching that movie

Mar 16, 2012 9:05:09 I liked the movie overall. The jumping around got a little excessive IMO, but the plot was done well. I agree Barsoom had that "Dark Sun" feeling, and the Tharks also reminded me of the thri-kreen.

Mar 16, 2012 14:51:51 I enjoyed the movie and all I could think about was how closely it followed Dark Sun. The defilers, warring city-states (Helium vs Zodanga), politics playing in the background of every decision and one group trying to manipulate the other. Even looking into space at the Earth and Moon you could use that reference to Ral and Guthay.

Mar 19, 2012 16:36:16 Funny enough, the actual books were an influence for Dark Sun IIRC. So many of the things in the John Carter of Mars series were adapted into Dark Sun (everyone is psionic, desert world, ect).

Mar 21, 2012 23:57:08 I saw the movie over the weekend, and I enjoyed it. About a little less than half way into the movie, I had a sudden realization. I read this book when I was around 12 years old and had completely forgotten about until that moment. What can I say, it was nearly thirty years ago. Then I was really amazed because I remembered just how old the book was that this movie was based on. The orginal material for this book was 100 years old, and it is still good stuff.
