Anyone using the new books for non-4e DS?

Aug 12, 2010 17:10:17 I'm using the new DS books for a 4e game, but I have friends playing other stuff who've asked the question. My own take is that they're useful enough one their own, even if the Creature Catalog is half-crunch.

So tell me: if you're playing another game and have seen the books, do they look useful to you?

EDIT: To clarify, I'm talking about using the new books for Dark Sun with non-4e D&D (as opposed to playing non-DS with 4e D&D; but that's good to know too!)

Aug 13, 2010 7:55:36 While I really like the DS campaign setting, if you don't intend to play in DS, I'd just wait for the update to the character builder. That way you'll have access to the Mul, Thri-Kreen, but you don't really need their descriptions.

I also DM a FR campaign and I don't really see what I could extract from DSCS that would not be in the character builder, as I would have to refluff the whole thing anyways.

But I would suggest you rethink your position as a group, try to convince a few players, 4th ed DS is awesome.

Aug 13, 2010 15:17:51 I'm thinking of playing Dark Sun to Cyberpunk 2020 rule system because the combat is more realistic and the psychic power rules are better. However, I don't need 4e for that, but it would be a change.

If you've ever played Cyberpunk 2020, you'd know why it's more realistic.

Aug 13, 2010 16:38:17 I think that the new Battlemind build "Wild Battlemind" would be welcome in any campaign. I like the feel of this build and the new build in Psionic power a lot.

Aug 13, 2010 16:55:24 The standardized and level nature of 4e (compared with 2e) would make it easier to use with World of Darkness (and the new book Mirrors does provide some more advice for running straight fantasy games). Divide levels by 3, stats by 5, etc, to find out a rough idea of the scale for WoD (maybe levels by 5, stats by 10, round up, add level and stat together and shove them into the equivilant).

I'd also consider running it with Paranoia. Replace "Computer" with "Sorcerer King" and it kinda works.

There's also another system, Great Ork Gods, that would be fun and would provide another explanation for why there are no clerics (the Gods aren't absent or dead, they just hate you).

But, still, I'm gonna use 4e unless something ridiculous happens like Pat Robertson takes over and makes name brand D&D illegal.
