This is just a character concept I had conceived just awhile ago.  Please let me know if has been done/attempted before in the existing lore on Dark Sun, or if it's even possible to do so in the current scenario (aside from the "ask your DM" or "your DM sets the background" stuff), as well as how to improve on this, if possible:

An arcane caster, a somewhat-naive wizard/sorcerer/artificer (elemental priest? I'm not too familiar with the themes), who dedicates himself to creating a life form -- even if it's just a plant -- that would be immune to Arcane Defiling and able to survive in the harsh world of Athas, in an attempt to fight the corruption of the land.

... even if it means prevalent use and study of Arcane Defiling, to a point where he has mastered its use beyond that of most defilers.  And even if the ritual that would create said life form would require a ritual involving a massive corruption of what is left in the existing land, and very unwelcome attention from the Sorcerer-Kings.

[ Would likely be a villain, but is it possible for this to be a PC? ]

Check out Terrors of Athas, a free pdf 3e monster manual from Athas.org. It contains the Defiled template, which you might find useful for ideas:
The defiled are plants that have been almost destroyed thanks to the actions of a defiler drawing in plant energy to cast their spells. For unknown reasons, the plant survives the attack and becomes undead.
