The fauna on Athas all seems to be pretty exotic, but are there any traditional creatures scattered about?  Camels seem like they would fit in at least a little.  Do any of the older 2e sources talk about camels, or specifically list them as NOT existing on Athas?

The don't exist. Here's a short quote from DSCG:
Many beasts of burden, such as horses, camels, oxen, and elephants, have died out. Other domesticated and game animals, such as dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, sheep, antelope, and deer, are likewise absent from Athas. Goats survive, as do lions, hyenas, bats, and a few small rodents such as mice and desert rats.

Kanks and Inix are the new 'Horses of the Desert' baby.

Or a Mekillot if you're not too attached to your hands (or your money)...

Ok, thanks for the info.  I guess I missed that section in the DSCG, Pennarin.  I think the Giant Lizard and Giant Ant from the Adventurers Vault could still be used, though, as well as a few others.  It might be fun to give the Riding Shark the same treatment as the Silt Shark in the back of the Dark Sun Creature Catalog.

*laughs*
Like I said, Kanks and Inix are the new 'Horses of the Desert' baby.

A Kank is a Giant Ant
an Inix is a Giant Lizard

I am curious though...

you're mentioning all these other pre-existing mounts. Do you not like the options that are specifically native to Dark Sun?

Or do you just have a preference for using existing creatures?

Don't forget the erdlu and crodlu, they are like bipedal dinosaurs.  When I think of a Athas' equivelent to a horse, I think crodlu.

I don't have my books handy, but haven't they downsized these so that they're now only Medium sized? Which means they're only mounts for Small creaures (ie, Halflings).

Pity, my old ranger was very fond of his Crodlu...very Final-Fantasy-Chocobo-Style....especially with old permanent spell-options like spider-climb and silt-walking.... ahhm the olden days,...

Crodlu are still large.  Erdlu are medium but I dont think they have a statblock yet.  I would just use the crodlu block since they are basically the same thing.

We always knew they'd survive the apocalypse...
