I have a player who want's to play a Void Genasi in Dark Sun which casts arcane spells. Are there even any Void Genasi in Dark Sun?

Yes.  The Elemental Chaos bleeds into the world of Athas in various ways and occassionally reslts in Genasi individuals.  They aren't the most common of folk, but they exist.

My question would be, can they defile?  Does any "arcane caster" have the option to defile?

I am not sure how I would rule on a Void Genasi. All elemental manifestations definately fit on Athas (as stated in the DDI article: "Genasi of Athas"), however I am unsure how Void fits into this. That being said, if it were my campaign I would only allow manifestations, previously deemed paraelementals in 2e to defile. This includes: Sun, Magma, and Silt - Rain, for obvious reasons would be excluded.

The rational for this, at least in previous DS material was that defiling actually strengthened the sway of these elements on Athas by the destruction it caused.

My 2 ceramic.

What I'm considering doing in the game I am planning, is allow divine magic, but "evil only" (monsters only).  I'm trying to tie into the mythos of Dark Sun that there are "other worldly" being still present, and they can grant power to thier disciples, just like sorcerer kings, only I want the power source to be something "different".

I started another thread on this, but figured I'd toss it out here as well, since it's a similar topic to the OP (trying to fit something into Dark Sun that maybe be little little like a square peg, round hole).  Actually want these otherworldly being to be creatures from the Far Realm (and maybe tieing Cthulu into the mix).  Making those forces part of the cause of Athas's fall into it's current ruined state.

Yes, any time you use an appropriate power from the arcane power source, you have the option to defile.

Don't forget the primal spirits!  While the gods were driven away, the primal spirits of the world stll dwell on it.  They range from inor powers to psuedo-deities in themselves and are trying their darndest to maintain/repair the world. They can be gaurdians of a mountain chain, protectors of a grove, or wards over a pack of wild beasts.

People who form relationships with them can potentially wield powers from the Primal power source (Elemental Priests, Druids, Shamans, Seekers, Wardens, Barbarians, etc). Some people- like the templars of Gulg- force them into their service and essentially "steal" their power.

If you are the DM, the answer to this question is: yes, provided that you wish to allow voidsoul genasi in your game. Conversely, the answer is "no" if you don't wish to do so.

Certainly, the corrupt genasi manifestations make sense for a world in which the very cycles of nature are slowly fraying at the edges.
