I wanted to let everyone know that the Dark Sun organized play campaign has now made Chapter One adventures available for home play.

Edit, 2013: All chapters can now be ordered by sending me a personal message. Use the side panel next to my name to send me a PM with the e-mail address to which I should send the adventures. We will also send links to maps and the final Campaign Guide.

Thanks!

Will we be able to request an adventure after it is retired from play?  I'm guessing it simply means retired from con play but I just want to make sure I'm on the same page.

A friend of mine is trying to organize a local con of our own.  The plan is to run various gaming systems through out the day.  I volunteered to run Gamma World and or 4e Dark Sun.  It would be great to have an Ashes of Athas adventure.

They will actually retire from play in all forms. We realize this is a short window (though feedback is appreciated - especially as we get close to the first retirements). The idea is to encourage everyone to stay with the current storyline so that everyone is focused forward. We hope that the lower number of adventures (9 per year) makes this possible without being a hindrance.

Dave Christ (aka, "the Baldman") is the guy who made it happen, along with Wizards of the Coast.

They both really liked the concept and saw you all being excited and playing a lot of Ashes of Athas, so they went forward with expanding play options.

We will continue to be motivated by the convention play. We will write for that type of event/atmosphere/etc. In our minds, that's the coolest place to play AoA. But, we will try to also address home play within the adventures (for example, instructing DMs that in home play they can explore a scene longer).

Also, a sneak peak for chapter 2. The first two adventures will feature a mix of RP, investigation, and (of course) combat. The third in the series will feel like a battle interactive. Expect a strong challenge with a lot of exciting combat and some new rules never before attempted... At Origins and Gen Con we will stress that feel in ways that home play likely can't easily replicate.

We are currently deep in the bleary-eyed stage for Chapter Two. We sent out draft adventures to Origins judges and we are working on story awards for the chapter. I think people will enjoy these rewards, let alone the adventures.

Dave reports more than 100 adventure requests so far, which was a lot more than I expected! Thanks, folks!

Now back to work...

I'm typing this a few hours before I leave to attend Origins and play Chapter Two.
(So this may be entirely too late)

My group spent Chapter One being chased all over Athas by ...um... The Enemy.  Now I want to know:
(a) how did They get our number, and
(b) we figured out who They are (part 3), how can we get Their number in return?

Hopefully part/all of Chapter Three can involve taking care of this.

Looking forward to more Ashes of Athas tomorrow!

The thanks here really go to the Baldman. He made home play happen. The admins, you can blame us for the content!

Do consider running a small gameday. The adventures fit nicely into one day of gaming. DMs get credit for running (or can replay), which should make organizing a con or gameday easier.

Let us know how you like Chapter 2.

You asked for it.

On second thought: Extensive discussion coming soon on the AoA forums.

We did better by role-playing the negotiations than our characters could have done at skill checks (because the highest Diplomacy/Bluff/Intimidate rating we had was a +5).  Good thing the pro-slavery speech was delivered from behind a desk and some bodyguards, not into the face of our Escaped Slave character!
Edit: One of the other players at our table wanted to pop his Daily on the speech-ifier.

The town wall
Show

- In-game reality check: Why would you build a town wall only 15 feet high, when the known enemies who you want to keep out, can jump 20 feet straight up?  Did the architect actually get paid for his work?!
Suggested fix: would-be jumpers have to be part-way up a ladder; this encourages the PCs to pull ladder shenannigans.  (I still want to allow a STR 20 guy to pull the ladder UP on the wall for keeps!)
Edit: I can answer my own question - maybe the architect got paid by House Mercenary, which needs to give raw recruits some experience.

Please do use spoiler blocks around adventure content. Thanks!

Let's talk more over on the AoA forums, but at the high level:
Spoilers within related to Chapter Two

1) Intended
2) We used the sizes stipulated by canon, in part because those measurements are stated several times in several different sources of both AD&D and 4E. The idea you propose is within the purview of what a DM is instructed to do. Out-of-the-box PC/player thinking is encouraged.
3) Athas isn't fair? It worked well in a couple of playtests and was too strong in one playtest, but we will take Origins feedback into account for further changes. Please write more on the AoA forums. Specifically, was it really a problem, or did it make for a fun challenge?
4) We've had different experiences. 4E is swingy and it isn't uncommon for one table to destroy fight x and have trouble with fight y, and then the next table to have the complete opposite experience. We try to provide a varied enough encounter design that it is unlikely you will have trouble in all encounters or cakewalk all of them. The adventures stipulate the target challenge level and provides the DM ways to meet the target, though it is of course easier for DMs to do so once they have run the adventure at least once.

Received my copy for my home campaign (we game at the FLGS or the house depending on availabilty) and I am impressed.  Well put together and because we play about 3 hrs a night weekly, it looks to be easy to divy up like the Encounters sessions were.

Kudos to the designers!  Looking forward to CH2&3 once out and we get there.

We had a really successful Gen Con. My thanks to everyone that has played, judged, authored, and posted feedback. When we launched this we never expected it to be so successful. We had 25-30 tables per slot at Gen Con. That is just incredible. Thank you!

With Gen Con we have finished the 2011 story arc and now commence to design 2012!

That's awesome alphastream. One of my players went to Gen Con and texted me after playing. He said it was pretty kick-@$$.

I know there are difficulties involved, but I think Baldman Games should seriously consider publishing the Ashes of Athas series. After all, it's not like WotC is providing a lot of adventures or supporting their settings. Unless of course they do a complete turn around in the next year.

Oh, one important bit. I wanted to clarify to players and judges of AOA2-2, that there was an incorrect title in the final encounter for the last story award. If you were worried you missed out on something, you didn't. It just had the wrong title.

Kurmudgeon, thanks. We can't publish without going to an OGL model, and that would necessitate stripping out all IP, such as the setting information. It just isn't possible under the current situation. We are very grateful that we can allow home play for a limited time period, so hopefully players and DMs take advantage of those windows.

Yah, the link seems to be aimed at "last post", not "MY post".  Here's a cut-and-paste of what I said:
Returning from GenCon, where I played my Dark Sun druid through four modules (whew).  Brief thoughts:

- I finally dumped my L1d Lightning Arc power because I never used it.  It prones everybody adjacent to the primary targets.  That usually meant my allies, due to the prevalence of melee artists in DS and my low initiative modifier.

- My new L1d is Wind Prison, which saw a lot of use (because it is party-friendly).  I planted it on one flying skirmisher and watched all his friends fall flat on their faces when he came at us for a flyby attack.  In another module, I used it on an immobile attacking tree since it would be perma-CA for everybody.

- Comment from a swarm druid: Are you EVER going to get into beast form?!
Answer: No; Narvik's a controller, not a striker.  I'm going to stand back here and cast stuff at the enemy.

- I met paladins on Athas.  Deva paladins.  Yes, there were two.  They said (I didn't check on this myself) that Character Builder let them do it.  If they go Demigod ED, the heavens will never be the same.

- I popped my L5d Vine Serpents on one BBEG and missed.  But the effect was - as I explained in the local vernacular - "the bad guy is now in a World Wrestling Federation cage match".  After that, the melee guys were champing at the bit to get at him.

- That BBEG was also an artillery.  I was actually setting up a duel between him on one side and the THREE spellcasters on ours, figuring he would hurt himself (this makes our job go quicker) rather than run (and meet our melee artists) or surrender.

- For flavor purposes, I'm changing Thorn Whip to Chill Wind, because most of my non-at-wills have something to do with the breeze.  However I maintain that Thorn Whip is under-rated in this guide.  (It should be basic black, not avoid-me purple.)  I have really enjoyed using it and recommend it as an out-of-the-box at-will.  BTW, if you can manage to be 3 floors up and on a balcony you can get 1d8+mods+1d10 out of Thorn Whip.  Pull your victim two squares straight up and drop him.  Note that there is no weight limit on what you can pull.

- I got a CRIT with e1 Call Forth the Spirit Pack after delaying my turn until the Warden had a chance to mark all the tough guys in the room.  In effect I got 3X-normal damage and bloodied my target in one shot.  I thereby fulfilled my pseudo-striker deed for the day.  This is my only encounter power that has no breeze attached, but I'm keeping it anyway.

- Call of the Beast did not get as much use here as it did at Origins.  (Are you defending the town wall?  CotB + end your turn in beast form + Savage Rend = gold.  Also good is firing CotB into a crowd that can't get up a ladder to reach you.)  I'm keeping it because I can send enemies onto the high-AC defender rather than the injured striker.  It's also good if you (and friends) can CotB + slow + push away; the enemies take the damage if they don't attack at all !

- Healing Seed L2u is a cool thing to have around if you get into a grindfest and have used your second wind.  I've started just creating the thing at the beginning of every module so it's available when somebody needs healed up.  I usually have plenty of healing surges available (but once in a while I get plastered by something).

- Dwarven resistance to Poison was nifty when I got clobbered by an Athasian Minstrel's alpha strike.  I still had to make a pair of death saving throws before the Warlord could get over to me, though.

- In one encounter, I surprised the party: I rolled my attacks but missed, then volunteered to take three kamikazes for 16 HP total (they were minions and calculable).  I announced that Narvik spent 1 healing surge and went on as if nothing had happened.  The non-CON guys were jealous.

So ... the Baldman did a ton of work and now he wants to REST ?!  How un-Athas is that? Tongue out  He must meet the praetor from AoA2-2!
Seriously, thanks to him and the rest of the staff.  This campaign has been a lot of fun.

I asked Dave about that. Chapter One has officially been retired. Chapter Two should be available in October and Chapter Three shortly thereafter.

I know this is a bit hard on folks. The window for distribution is tight. On the other hand, that is actually WotC being pretty nice about letting us distribute adventures. The original premise of the campaign was no distribution outside of cons, but was relaxed in limited fashion based on people really wanting to run them outside of cons. Further adjustments in 2012 may be possible.

Just about wrapping up my FR campaign in epic fashion and I'm going to run a DS campaign next. Ive been reading a lot of adventures and source material and on a whim i ordered AOA chapter 2. I have to say its amazing! One of the best published adventures I've seen. And Ive been a DM for 32 yrs!! However, now I really want to start the adventure with chapter one. I've seen that it's been retired,is there no way to get a copy? from the web sight summary I have the basic gist of what is supposed to happen and i guess i could design it on my own.....but chapter 2 really impressed me and I'd like to run Chapter one as it was intended.

Glad to hear you like it, thanks! The admins and authors worked really hard on those and we had some fantastic authors. I think Chapter Two in particular is very good for a home game, giving you more time to enjoy the encounters (and for DMs to improvise for fun).

We just chose our authors for Chapter Four, and we have a few return authors as well as new ones. We are really excited about what will be coming out at DDXP and then beyond in 2012!

Chapter One is retired and there is no way to distribute the adventure (please, please, please refrain from any distribution). We enjoy great flexibility in authoring the adventures and I'm thankful for that, but it does mean a limited distribution window. However, we have considered in the future having a way to catch players up. We are also writing each year so it can largely stand on its own if you are just starting.

I really don't think earlier chapters will be released. This isn't something we control, and we feel fortunate that we are allowed to distribute them in this limited maner instead of it being solely a con-driven program. In addition, we want players to be roughly on the same page progression-wise.

Chapter 2 can work on its own, especially if you download the summary from the adventure request page and use that as backstory for the PCs.

Chapter 2 will retire Dec 15th, so if you are interested please order the adventures before they retire!

A few updates!

There is a contest on our forums to help create the next Ashes of Athas pregens!

Help us create a list of PCs in the campaign so we can feature your PC in an upcoming adventure!

We are in need of an artist for a very simple drawing of a vehicle that we can place on a battlemap. You will receive credit.

I have a question about how clear our Campaign Guide is regarding character generation and what might cause players to show up with PCs that have elements not allowed in the campaign.

Thanks, and I hope to see you soon at D&DXP!

Sadly, I missed out, in similar fashion, way back with the first module. After we missed the initial adventure, I didn't bother to ask for those that came after. I appreciate the effort being made to create and distribute these, even if my group and I slipped through the cracks.

For those interested, we now have an updated Campaign Guide document! We added better support for rituals, a few character options, and you now level for a new Chapter even if you could not play all of the previous adventures. Thus, if you are playing Chapter 3 you will be level 5 and if you play Chapter 4 you will be level 6 - even if you are a new player.

You can find the file on our downloads page (as well as some new logsheets for Chapter 4).

We hope to have some Heroes of the Elemental Chaos preview content up soon, and will have a way to earn it for those that attend D&DXP! We will also upload the pregens that won the contest when we get a chance... so much to do before D&DXP!

That's awesome alphastream. One of my players went to Gen Con and texted me after playing. He said it was pretty kick-@$$.

Hello kurmudgeon.

You contacted me and i tried to reply but your Profile resctrictions  prevented me from doing so, saying you only accept messages from friends.

You'll have to Friend me up or loosen your Profile restrictions if you want me to answer you :P

One thing I wanted to say is that you are free to run and play older chapters. If someone else near you has a previous chapter, they can run it for you. This is obviously easier in larger metropolitan areas (primarily US), but asking around may help find someone that could run an adventure for you. If you have cons in your area that have run AoA, for example, chances are good that someone could help you set up a table of a previous chapter.

I have to send  big thanks out to Dave/Wavester.  My Hotmail account was kicking out the email due to size and he was nice enough to resend it to my Comcast account.  I also want to thank everyone on the AoA staff for their hard work and dedication to my favorite setting.

Man, I'm just now through reading the whole Part 2. Really well-made adventures. I love the "story awards" and stuff and agreed I would pay for stuff like this.

The players in my non-AoA Dark Sun game are about to visit Altaruk, and I would LOVE to be able to use Altaruk info from AoA to integrate them into the city, maybe with an eye toward establishing a background for AoA play. But I missed the window for the Part 1 series when Altaruk is really introduced. Maybe a magic genie will send me the PDFs :P

Yes--Yes it does!  And I shamefully had to admit that I had not served my time in the Sand attempting to squash evil! Ideally, insectivore psionic evil!

So I went to the Baldman Games pages and tried to request adventure here:
  www.baldmangames.com/aoaadvreq/

but got a 404-page not found.

I am able to see the Where to Play page:
  www.baldmangames.com/aoawtp/

but nothing seems all that close to me.

I am VERY interested in playing Ashes of Athas--but I am not sure where to start...I do not think Ashes of Athas ran at ORCCON 2012--they did run Living Divine, I think [I spent all my time in Living Forgotten Realms].

I do not see it running any where in Southern California soon--can someone provide advice on how I can quickly jump on board?

Thanks, David! A few thoughts.

I have updated the list of conventions here, since I maintain that thread.

D&D XP in Fort Wayne, IN (Jan 26-29, 2012)
Origins in Columbus, OH (May 30-June 3. 2012)
Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN (August 16-19. 2012)
Genghis Con in Denver, CO (Feb 16-19, 2012)
ConnCon in (March 16-18, 2012)
GameStorm in Portland, OR (March 22-25, 2012)
SynDCon in Washington, DC (TBD)
ComicPalooza in Houston, TX (May 25-27, 2012)
OwlCon in Houston, TX (February 3-5, 2012)

There may be additional ones. If anyone mentions them to me, I will update the list.

In addition, Chapter 3 will be available for download in the near future. There is an in-character summary of Chapter 1 available on the Ashes site. If someone wants to write a version for Chapter Two, we could post that as well. Chapter 3 ends the 2011 story arc.

Chapter 4 premiered at D&DXP and will be at Origins. While the story does pick up where Chapter 3 ended, and is impacted by what took place in previous chapters, we are starting up on what will initially feel like a new story - a mystery that appears in Altaruk with serious consequences. Because this is new, it works well for players that want to jump in at this point but don't know what took place before. As we get into Chapter 5 some of the previous chapters will have greater effects on the story, but by then new players should hopefully have a solid grounding on what is taking place in 2012.

We may also have other ways to get you into the campaign if you miss the start of Chapter 4, but no promises! Also, keep in mind that if you are in an area that has regular play you may be able to find someone that has run Chapters One-Three that could run them for you. Also, you can always ask a convention to order Ashes of Athas adventures. They are free for the con, of course. And, if you DM them you can choose between replaying or applying full credit to your PC.

I realize that this product is meant to support Organized Play, but is there any way for players that just want additional Dark Sun material to perhaps work into their home campaign to get their hands on older material, even if there's a cost involved?  I'd love to request the latest modules, but I'm guessing that it won't integrate that well into the campaign I'm planning to start in the next month or so, nor would integrating it fit with the ongoing story and reports you're likely looking for.  Still, as someone without a ton of time to build big modules, being able to integrate scenarios into an ongoing campaign is a perfect way to simplify things.  Are there any options for regular joes that just can't get enough Dark Sun?

Alphastream

Apr 06, 2012 12:04:43
Hi Bronnzai! We completely understand and we feel that way too! I keep seeing threads on this list where DMs ask for help with something (Tyrian adventure, Kalak's Ziggurat, Under-Tyr, Altaruk, Wilderness, stuff I can't mention yet) and where I or others say "hey, check out Ashes of Athas for a way to do that". So, I do think it is of value to most DMs even when they have their own ideas for their campaign.

I also see the AD&D and 4E adventures for Dark Sun as often being only loosely connected. Ashes of Athas is arguably the longest single-story play experience the setting has had. There is some value to the setting in preserving that.

Right now the limited window is the only way (outside of playing at cons) that we can distribute Ashes of Athas. We do continue to investigate other possibilities. No promises!

Alphastream, 2 questions probably going to finish chapter 2 in my home campaign tonight. Exactly how and what type of feedback do you want? The PDF questionnaires that came with it or do you need more? Also how to I get the feedback to you? 2nd how long till chapter 3 gets released? My guys loved chapter 2 and I'd like to get them into chapter 3 asap. They don't want to put the campaign on hold so I'm probably going to run a side quest until its released, assuming its in the near future.

Hi Wemn, and thanks! We always welcome feedback on our forums - any constructive feedback helps us fine tune our future work. You don't need to share the results to the questions in that we have already written Chapters 3 and 4. If you had especially interesting results, then that tale is both fun for us and others on the forums and there is always a (small) chance we could use it in some way.

I don't know the timing on Chapter 3 being distributed. Dave will have to comment.

Thanks!

Not at this time, and there may not be. We are trying to find a way to get these to you (even for free), but it is difficult to do so for many different reasons (some of them discussed earlier in this thread).

Of course, as an admin, the bulk of our time is spent working on the upcoming Chapters. We are finishing up the final work on Chapter 5 (premiering at Origins very soon!) and Chapter 6 (premiering at Gen Con in August).

Yeah, that's not allowed. Sorry. However, you can check in your area to see if any DMs have a copy and could run a game for you. If you live in or near a large urban area, it wouldn't be that surprising to find someone can run the first chapters. (Especially true if any local conventions ran Ashes of Athas).

Check your e-mail. If you didn't hear back you could send the e-mail back to Dave and let him know. I'm not sure if he can do anything this far beyond the distribution date, however.

On our end, we do keep working on distribution, though it is an uphill battle. Letting WotC know your interest (Twitter, Customer Support, this thread, etc.) may help.

As my current campaign is nearing completion I started looking around at Dark Sun as an option for my next game. There's a lot of positive reviews of Ashes of Athas out there and I started trying to find out where I could buy the adventures. After reading through this thread, however, that's apparently not possible.

I just wanted to voice my opinion to Wotc. Please, publish AoA in Dungeon, put it up for digital download sale, something--anything. Please don't let it fall into obscurity. It would be a terrible shame.

AlphaStream,
Any updates on the release schedule? Our group has played chapters 1-3 and loved them. Think these are some of the best modules to come out for D&D in a long while and would be a shame to not distribute to an even wider base than can attend the conventions. Is this a legal battle with WoTC? Anything we can do to help? Anyone we can solicit from WoTC in particular that will help get these released to the public in the near future? Would love to see these as a Dragon article in the future.

Thanks and looking forward to an update.

I was about to hatch this plan to kidnap Chris Tulach and Mike Mearls at Gen Con, but instead would advocate talking to those guys at Gen Con or via Twitter and letting them know.

It isn't a legal battle, but it is about distribution worries. I don't know the details, and it truly pains me that we haven't been able to release the recent adventures for home play. We still are working on this issue.

Thanks for the kind words. In the meantime we will keep making the chapters as good as we can. Chapter 6 at Gen Con next week will be pivotal to the future of the campaign!

Ashes of Athas has concluded. It was a fantastic finish (better than we admins dared hope). We can't thank everyone enough for making the campaign so successful!

There is some talk that one of us might attend Origins and run Chapter 7 (and perhaps 6). If you are interested, let us know on the AoA forums.

I'll work up a blog post soon to share some info, keeping in mind some may want to avoid spoilers.

As for distribution, we spoke to a number of Wizards people about it. We are doing all we can to get these adventures into your hands!

Any idea why it is not just on the article archive?

Hi all,

We took a few days to straighten out the first 6 (of 7) chapters. We are now going through everyone that has sent an e-mail or PM and responding.

In the near future we will set up a web page with e-mails and make it a bit clearer for you. To answer the questions below...

I had a look on the link for the distribution of AoA - is it basically:

3) But you've got to email a certain person who will then send you 1 chapter at a time

The above is true, with the addition that you need to send us your e-mail and which chapters you need. Also, you can't redistribute (if people redistribute then this will get shut down).

The reason it isn't on the article archive is that this isn't Wizards material. It was a volunteer effort done for Wizards conventions, but it did not go through the excellent development and editorial process used by Wizards.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! We are at 5,600 adventure requests, which is really unexpected in such a short timeframe!

Hey! Are you still sending out the adventures? I've pm'ed you but received no replies.

Thanks in advance!

*Edit: and actually I did. My bad and thanks again!

No problem! We are actively distributing the adventures. I process all PMs in chunks, so that I can be a bit more efficient in sending out the e-mails. Thanks!
