Jul 12, 2010 15:08:03 Last Sunday I watched last two episodes of Spartacus: Blood&Sand. While skeptical at first, I became interested in series and finally turned to be fan of it. Especially after the very last episode. But, while watching it, I was more and more convinced that it is very "dark-sunish" series. Brutal, unforgiving life of gladiators, ever-present danger, abusive lords, only two things was missing: fantasy monsters (obviously not suited for a quasi-historical show) and someone of sorcerer-kings political power.

But, the series gave me an insight in gladiator's life. I was always convinced that gladiator are under permanent control, always watched, either caged or in arena. while it is true, a series showed me that even then there is some sort of dual live: they have their own agenda, fight secret wars, spin intrigues. After watching it, I have a feeling I know, how to run campaign, that begins in pits.

Read Dark Sun 2e's Gladiator book; that will give you much insight and ideas. The book's more about the world that surrounds the Gladiator than the Gladiator himself.
