I've been reading through some of the old forum and found mention of a species known as the nikaal. A poster had said that, along with halflings and thri-kreen, they were one of the three original species in the Blue Age. I can't seem to actually find that information in any 2e books, though.

Can anyone help me out?

As far as I recall, Nikaal were mentioned in the Prism Pentad novels and didn't see game stats till the second monster book in the 90s. They're basically a nomadic reptilian humanoid race, though not as lizard-like as the Ssurans.

Steve Bell's website in the 90's is the origin of the idea that there were three originator races: kreen for insect-like modern species (besides kreen), halflings for soft-skins, and nikaals for scaled-skins. Magic-O-evolution, and the Pristine Tower during the Rebirth, would have built on those three to create what exists now.

As good an idea as any.

Nikaal are on Page 74, 2nd Ed Monstous Compendium Appendix II, Terrors beyond Tyr.  They are 3 HD, and a hell of a lot less powerful than the Sarrukh.  They are described as wandering traders, nomadic tribes of (10-100).
They are present in the Dungeon Adventure "Grave Circumstances" in Dungeon 56, Nov/Dec 1995.

Nikaal are mentionned in one of the 2e supplements besides monster compendiums, if you make a word search in your pdf documents. It says they use giant herd lizards with a weird name who have never been stated in any 2e or 3.5e document.

They get a superior workup in Athas.org's Terrors of Athas (3.5e) free pdf.

I'm not sure, but I think the cover of the 1st Prism Pentad book as well as the 2E Dark Sun set depicts a Nikaal.

It's the scaly orange fellow that is joining the Tarek in charging at Agis of Asticles. Looks like the dead bloke at Agis' feet is a gith.

Agis is killing more species than Rajaat!
