| #1redxdeliversSep 22, 2009 8:32:08 | the initial run of dark sun featured alot of artwork by brom. i thought his style and interpretation lent itself to providing a large part of the feel and flavor of teh world with athas being rereleased do you think hell be contacte dto do more work for wotc? |
| #2moebius63Sep 22, 2009 10:44:00 | God I hope so. He was one of the main reasons I got into Dark Sun. Love his work. But to be honest, I'd be pretty suprised if he did do some work on it. I think he's pretty much moved on. But the fact that DS was a major boost in the beginning of his career, I guess it is possible that this would be something he'd be interested in doing, simply from a nostagic point of view. But I'm really liking the cover by Wayne Reynolds for this new CS. He seems more than capable of honoring Brom's work and still make it his own. His version of the Dragon was dead on, in my eyes at least. |
| #3eric_anondsonSep 22, 2009 21:31:59 | I forget where I read it, but Brom has said he is busy with other contracts, but it really wants to participate. |
| #4tashalatoraSep 23, 2009 13:38:56 | If Brom did the cover art for the Dark Sun player's book I'd by another copy just to keep it 'pretty'. In fact, Brom has enough of a following now that there'd be a LOT of extra purchases if he was fully involved with the cover and inside illustrations. You'd probably pick up a few non-D&D players. Do you hear me sales, marketing and art departments? |
| #5PennarinSep 23, 2009 14:26:29 | Another guy than Brom did the Dungeon Magazine cover for the 3rd Edition revival of Dark Sun. The guy's style is intentionaly a copy of Brom's. I would go with that artist too. |
| #6phoenix_mSep 23, 2009 15:48:07 | Would that be the Dungeon Magazine 110's cover artist James Ryman? |
| #7PennarinSep 23, 2009 16:32:09 | Yes |
| #8claytoniantombSep 24, 2009 1:20:00 | As long as Braxa doesn't come back. Sorry Braxa, but you gave us one leopard skin leotard too many. |
| #9eric_anondsonSep 24, 2009 7:33:05 | As long as Braxa doesn't come back. That's spelled Baxa, no "r".
|
| #10Razor767Sep 24, 2009 12:52:28 | YES! NO TOM BAXA! God he made my eyes hurt. |
| #11AkrielSep 24, 2009 13:30:00 | IMHO, Baxa was good for weird athasian Monster but not for Humans or humanoids. |
| #12PennarinSep 24, 2009 15:40:04 | My opinion as well: DSMCII was the most professional-looking monstrous compendium for DS thanks to great layout, full color, and Baxa's best work yet. |
| #13bfishySep 24, 2009 19:50:04 | not a huge fan of baxa either. next to brom's work his art was raw and unrefined at best. though i must say that he has come a long way since, and his overall skill has improved greatly...though he still cheats a few things sometimes :P |
| #14SysaneSep 25, 2009 9:47:53 | I actually enjoyed Baxa's DS art. I have fond memories of showing my players his art in the old player flip book handouts from the 2E adverture mods. |
| #15lastardSep 25, 2009 20:13:51 | I like Brom as well as Baxa. I much prefer Baxa's black and white illustrations to those of David O. Miller, for example. Baxa's jagged drawings capture the flavour of the different cities (e.g. The Veiled Alliance supplement) and environments (e.g. The Valley of Dust and Fire) much better, and his faces look okay. Miller's elves in Dune Trader with the strange facial expressions are just too disturbing! Also not too keen on Dark Sun 2nd edition style art - although it is truly well crafted! I just hope it's not going to have the manga/computer game character feel of 4th edition artwork. I like it a bit more pre-biblical ;) Lastard |
| #16lastardSep 25, 2009 20:16:22 | Talking of artwork, I just found an interesting reptilian character from a German game (DSA) by a guy called Volker Konrad:

| #17bfishySep 28, 2009 12:47:24 |
AGH! MILLER! i curse his name! Baxa is a god next to that hack, and there were later supplements in BOTH dark sun and spelljammer that i would curse TSR for employing such a blatantly BAD artist. Miller...ugh...his name brings bile to my throat. |
| #18PennarinSep 28, 2009 12:54:43 | Some of the faces Miller drew had both eyes in the same facial oval, despite the angle of the neck rendering this impossible. The result: like those fish that have both eyes on the same side! Yuck. And his Farclunn from Black Flames looked like he had leprosy. Wtf? |
| #19greyormSep 28, 2009 15:45:18 | All this complaining about various artists makes me want to go find where I buried my DS books and re-examine everyone's style. Then again, if I see stuff that is stupidly sub-par, it'll probably send me into a fit of rage-and-self-pity ala "THEY got a contract? With THAT?! I've been unsuccessful at breaking in for over a decade, and I can draw way better! GRAH! WEEP!" So maybe I won't. Or I might just say, "Brom spoiled you guys." Dunno. |
| #20PennarinSep 28, 2009 18:25:56 | Rev, you'll always get an over 9000 points from me for your Scorcher |
| #21greyormSep 29, 2009 14:51:20 | Danke, sir! |
| #22bfishySep 29, 2009 18:17:14 | yeah that was some pretty sweet weapon designin' right there! |
| #23torynSep 29, 2009 18:23:39 | While I never got to see his work in Dark Sun (never had access to the books but heard about them after 3.0), Brom made a fan out of me with his darker artwork. Brom, along with Wayne Reynolds, are my 2 favorite artists, with the Hildebrandts coming close behind. I would like to see any of these do artwork for the new CS. |
| #24PennarinSep 29, 2009 19:32:45 | I might be insane...but I want 6 ft tall blow-ups of Giger art, and from two other artists. Giger's biomechanoid...gha, I forget the painting's number, the one depicting a woman giving a bl**job to a shotgun, is incredible. Struck a chord with me since early adolescence. Unfortunately it's hundreds of dollars for a replica not even 3 feet tall. |
