I have a player who created a human storm sorcerer for my upcoming DS game. I got to thinking that it would be a cool fit to tie him into the Cerulean Storm somehow (I know canon the storm is the essence of Tithian, but I will make it the essence of Kalak, so it will be newly activated in the campaign)

I have several ideas of how to incorporate this into the game, I thought about making it a theme, but it seems to be limited in that scope, so then I thought about an optional build for the storm sorcerer, they wouldn't have the Arcane Defiling power like other arcane classes (since no one knows the storm is the essence of a being) but should be given something in return as a unique class feature.

My first thought was to give them a bonus to thunder and lightning keyword powers and have a bonus to skill checks/traps involving such (like Lightning pillars).

Any thoughts or opinions?

Well, if you eliminate Defiling, you should give something similar in return. A flat bonus is nothing like it. I think you should focus on Lightning Pillars. This Cerulean Storm Mage should be able to control them and empower them at-will. Maybe even destroy them to empower her spells, that way it would be something similar to defiling.
Of course, that would be more situational than defiling.

Another thing would be that of representing her tapping into the storm as something dangerous to your allies like defiling. Maybe she can create a close burst 3 that does some nasty effect or damage to any creature, when she casts a daily. But that would mean just power if no ally is within 3.

I don't know, something along these lines however, not flat bonuses.

I like the idea of them being able to control lightning pillars...but that is very situational...definitely need something more if Arcane Defiling isn't going to be an option for him

In the 90s, the Cerulean kit let mages draw on the storm for power through a special lense, but they could still cast spells by preserving or defiling if it was broken. Check out page 46 of Defilers and Preservers if you have access to it.

Doesn't seem to me like the class needs to be modified much at all. A special implement that only this character could use (blue crystal lenses, perhaps just special orbs) might be more than enough. As long as a spell is cast with the orb, there is a crackle of blue energy and no worries about preserving or defiling. You could tie it to the story in an odd way, and maybe the character must defile without the special orb.

If you wanted to get rid of Arcane Defiling, I'd reflavor it as calling down a tyr storm. It could still damage allies and provide a reroll, but at the cost of summoning destructive hail and lightning down on the battlefield.

Alternately, if you use the special implement option, let it function with reckless breakage. If it breaks, a tyr storm comes with it.

Regardless, as long as the players are ok with it, it should be fine.

I'd make a theme out of it. Plenty of powers with summoning or whatever the keyword is for calling in Tyr Storm-themed effects. Would be open to all arcane characters.

I think I am going to to go with the special implement, it's clean and easy. They can cast with their blue orbs(lenses) without having to worry about defiling or preserving around them. But must go back to defiling and preserving if/when the implement breaks.

I'm interested in this idea, but how do you mean, 'not have to worry about defiling or preserving'? What worry is there in preserving since that's, mechanically, just using a regular unmodified arcane power?

what I basically meant, is that a Cerulean Mage is under the assumption that his energy source is from the Tyr-Storms and are neither classified as preservers or defilers, but in reality, the Tyr-Storms are the essence of Tithian (canon), or in my campaign Kalak after his fall. So they are defilers in using the life force of Kalak, just unknowingly.
