| #1JohnLynchMar 18, 2013 2:38:15 | So the official D&D Next Ranger has spells. This wouldn't be an issue except that one of my players ABSOLUTELY LOVES Rangers. So I want to get his favourite class into the Dark Sun campaign. However I don't want to have Rangers going around casting spells (as it's not appropriate). Enter: The Martial Ranger. This is just a preview at this stage. I'll be going through the Dark Sun Monstrous Compendium and sorting monsters into groups and taking note of their special abilities. I'll then create Dark Sun specific favoured enemy bonuses. The reason for that is the only favoured enemy bonus we have thus far is as follows: Favored Enemy (Dragons): You are immune to fear. This is hardly appropriate as there is only 1 Dragon in Athas. So I'll be homebrewing some Athas specific favoured enemy bonuses. But that's going to take time so I thought I'd point out my current work in progress on creating a Dark Sun friendly Ranger. |

For spells, it depends on your edition of choice. With 4E, this can resemble what druids do, or wardens, or shaman. 3E and before that, elemental priests and druids showed potential for how a ranger could work. What if a ranger chose a land type (such as scrub plains) to 'range', and received spells much as a druid does in return? They could also be elemental in nature, reskinning them in some fashion (a commune spell would be cast by building a fire and seeing a shimmering vision if you are a ranger of fire - perhaps from an area riddled with hot vents and volcanoes). |
