Hello,
I never posted, or it's been so long I've forgot. Any news or rumor about a 4th ed. Dark Sun campaign? Dark Sun always held something special for me. And I'm hoping to get those little butterflies again! I would tell wotc that if I do not have Dark Sun by the end of 2010 I'll boycott or burn all my 4th ed. But one guy from Kansas might not strike fear into them

If the lack of a setting, which is purely fluff in it's differences from the rest of all other settings, would make you boycott something, then maybe you just weren't really all that into it to begin with.

No hard facts yet, but there´s some solid speculation...

Looks like WOTC plans to release one setting every year, and those settings would consist only of a Player´s Guide, a Campaign Guide and an aventure for it. They´ve done so far for Forgotten Realms and Eberron (upcoming this year). Apparently, it will go on like this.

Since Psionics is one of the Power Sources most obvious to appear in PHB3 next yeat, some people are concluding that Dark Sun MAY BE the setting for 2010. There are no confirmation of it, but the evidence makes some sense.

Also, this "three-book format" allows WOTC to release every classic setting once a year, without commiting too much (financially speaking) to it. Rumors are that all classic settings will be released sooner or later (Ravenloft, Planescape... even Spelljammer).

Oh, and the designers already mentioned that 2010´s setting will blow our minds... Dark Sun, perhaps? I, for one, would LOVE to see the setting make a comeback. And I would definitely buy the three books for it.

Cheers,
Marcio

Also worthy of note is WotC's sudden spurt of rereleasing old Darksun novels in new editions.

Not just new printings mind you, but reformated, with new cover art.
The only reason for printing a paperback book in nonstandard size is to make it more visable and draw attention. The only purpose of doing that and new cover art would be to increase intrest the setting.

So, it's a bit of a stretch, I know, but it lends a certain amount of credence to theories that DarkSun may be making a comeback.

... euh, yes of course there is a 3rd and 3.5 conversion of Dark Sun. Athas.org is official with WOTC approval. In fact the WOTC darksun threads are pretty lively, more so than some other older settings.

Dragon and Dungeon magazines did an offical 3.5 update to Dark Sun. If you do some searching on the internet, you should be able to find the numbers and paizo.com has a bunch of back issues available for purchase. I bought a whole bunch for like $4 each.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty certain that I heard some WotC official specifically mention Dark Sun in the list of settings they're going to do. Frankly, I would expect to see Greyhawk before Dark Sun, but I have no evidence for such a position.

It is likely that we may see Darksun for 4th edition. But dont use the rerelease of the books as a sign of the times. As an example Dragonlance has current books still being released. So which would the release 1st, a setting they arent doing current books for or a setting that has current new books being released?

A good argument, save that they've had issues with rights, licensing, and so forth with Dragonlance and Margret Weis's publishing company Sovereign press.

I'm not privy to the full legal details, but the upshot I've gathered over the last two years is that they've had many disagreements, and licensing of the rights is a bit confused.

WotC opted not to publish a 3.X edition of Dragonlance as a campaign setting. Weis licensed the rights to publish them through her own publishing company, while WotC retained the rights to publish the novels. She published it for a while, then WotC did it's whole "No, no, we're not planning a 4th edition, where'd you hear a crazy thing like... GENCON OMFG WE HAZ A NEW EDITION!" thing, and pulled all the 3rd party licenses.

So, the upshot is, the rights to publish the Dragonlance Campaign setting are in a position for legal dispute. I suspect this will push them to the back burner.

I could be wrong. God knows I've been wrong before.

But given the poor sales of Dragonlance 5th age, and the poor sales of 3.X Dragonlance, I suspect that it's not going to be a top priority.

and that dragonlance is to close to the realms as a generic fantasy setting.

See todays item in "AMPERSAND"

James Wyatt and Rich Baker are getting ready to launch into next year’s campaign setting, which I know is going to surprise and delight many of you out there. I’ll start dropping hints about the setting over the next few columns, and we’ll see how many of you can figure out what’s coming.

now, note the wroding, delight...now, only way it can be with "delight" is if it's a fan favourite already, which can only mean, an old setting returned...

I'm going for Spelljammer or Dark Sun,a s both have been hinted at in recent stuff, notably the Manual of the Planes ;)

Well, what could it be? The statement is suitably opaque, and everyone that reads it is going to think that it is his favorite setting that has returned.

Have to admit though, bringing back Dark Sun as well as introducing psionics at the same time would be a brilliant move.

Also, assuming Rich Baker is L. Richard Baker III, then we know that he has worked on DS before.... unfortunately not helpful because he has worked on a whole lot of stuff.

But then again they did make the article Hazards of Dark Sun. So some thought has to go towards the Dark Sun setting.

PS: I have never really played this setting, but I read the 3.5 conversion in Dungeon and Dragon and was quite intrigued by it. And I figured that if it came out in 4th ed I would give it a spin.

A reinvisioning of Dark Sun would indeed delight me. But almost anything would be awesome at this point. I'm just grumpy that we're not going to see it till Gen Con and they're teasing mercilessly.

Skrapsan,
well worht buying the pdf from legla source,s think it's about $5 for the original boxed set?
do NOT get the "revised" set, they buggered the setting forcing it to go down a path laid out in so-so novels, whihc wrecked the entire ethos of the setting:
oppression: mystery.

go DARKSUN! ;)
