Went to the FLGS this past Friday to pick up the Dark Sun Campaign Guide.  They were sold out!  Now my FLGS is fairly large so I was shocked.  They had 3 Creature books left.  All this the day before the big D&D Dark Sun Game day!

I guess it must be a great book!

I grabbed the last one at mine as well. They had 1 creature catalogue left.

The owner said he wasn't sure if people still played DS, and was surprised at how fast they were going off the shelves.

I think that a large part of the appeal of DS in this edition are the themes, class features, and wild talents.

These new features that are free to a character (as in you do not have to give up any part of your character to get them).

These new features are the sort of thing that normally come in a players handbook.  Heck if it had a few new classes in it it would be better than a players handbook.  Basicly DS gives up having actual classes for setting flavor.  It combines many of the best qualities of splat, setting, and the players handbooks.

Setting books are not usually big sellers but this one has so many options added in that are brand new (as in not feats, classes, epic destinies, or paragon paths as every book has those) that it has a feel of a PHB.

Lastly they combined DM material with player material in one book thus both will buy the book rather than splitting up the material and custumers (like previous settings).  They learned from previous mistakes.

I'm glad the books are successful. They rolled the dice on reinstalling Dark Sun and it's paid off.

I am guessing amazon (in europe) also had a lot of orders as my books were delayed - probably they had to order more.

This is a good thing (as long as you eventually get your books) as they might publish more dark sun material. A more detailed book on the cities and factions would be nice.

Agreed! I would buy a Dark Sun book the second it is published. Actually, a few months before, because I would preorder it...

Not everyone likes this, but the fact that the book includes both player and DM options appeal to a bigger crowd.

I'm glad DS has a successful start.

Not just Europe.  I had mine on Pre-order here in the good ol' USA and I won't be getting my CC until the 2nd of September. Frown

'Wait' seems to be the watchword with this version of DS.  I have to wait a couple of extra weeks to get the Creature Catalog.  Now I'm going to have to wait a couple of more weeks for the character builder to Update.  It's quite frustrating.

The only reason I am not wigging out over the delays is that we're neck-deep in Revenge of the Giants, and I can sate my hunger by reading the CS over and over again.

Hmm I guess my area does not care about Dark Sun as much as we have plenty of copies in each of my local stores.

Got one of the last two from amazon uk. I've never played DS before so I asume that the reason that its so popular, is the same reason I bought it. The setting is EPIC. From what I've read it fits into the fantasy post apopolyptic catagory. That goes along with.... well things like Fall out (though Sci-Fi rather than fantasy) and PAs are always great fun with tons of thematic development and fluff up to the metaphorical ears. DS FTW.

EDIT: and it arived and I've played a game. Really, DS FTW.

When I bougt my CG last week, it was one of only two left on the shelf of my LGS. I hope the CC sticks around long enough for me to get a copy, although I can always convert monsters from the MMs in a pinch.

I'm going to be attempting to grab a copy today on my way home from work... I hope the store is still open.

I was surprised because this was the first and only 4e WOTC product to be sold out!  I think the setting has a lot of old players returning and new players interested!

I know of a lot of home campaigns starting up now that Encounters has ended. Our store was really impressed with how DS sold and how well the gamedays were attended. And they are a pro store that does well.

I just got the CC, and the LGS still had two CGs on the shelf. That having been said... this was the last CC. Given the popularity of 3.x and Pathfinder in the area, I'm not surprised. 4e hasn't done well here.

I've gone out of my way to get a good relationship going with my FLGS, where the "L" (local), means like 45 minutes to almost an hour away (depending on traffic).  They're one of WotC's "Premier" stores, so they get certain releases around 2 weeks early.  If you can find such a store, and have them set aside books for you when they come in, you're able to feed your D&D addiction sooner than the average "I buy online" guy.
